Second time that I am listening to a performance of his. And this one here really isn't good at all.... What was he thinking? He absolutely made a mess of it. It was at times more a howling to the moon. Now I am sure when he comes to Vienna in 2012 performing as Mario in Tosca needs to up a lot or the audience will rip him to shreds....

La voz es importante y esa es la gran pena. Con estos medios podría ser mucho mejor tenor. Aquí la emisión es brusca, primitiva y basada solo en las facultades. Una pena.

Seriously, whoever thinks Cura is a singer (it is implicit that is not good)...I don't know...I think in the end I am just really sorry for the orchestra...
A singer, and a good singer he is, with a good voice, but he's definitely not the best going around. I could stand listening to him in a full operatic performance. But I have to agree that some of his mannerism are a bit off-putting.

The expression on his while finishing that high note in the middle shows such immeasurable satifaction. The control on the last note especially, and overall is UNREAL. It's hard to imagine what kind of hellish training she had to undergo to present us with this slice of heaven.

Cura is a much better actor than what he shows here. Concert v. stage always presents a difference in presentation. He did rush through this though. The camera work is very poor as they focused on his face instead of the entire body.
I will maintain that on stage he is the second best male actor in the history of opera behind Vickers.

This tenor is great, my favorite!!!. The sound in video doesn´t make justice to his voice. I had the record on CD and is great!!!. José Cura was very well recognized by Plácido Domingo. The version of this piece is one of his specialty. I love it.

I don't know if the people who are commenting negatively are listening to the same video. He has way more dynamic contrast than most tenors who sing this. The first half of the aria sounds mp to me, very subdued and tragic.
Yeah you're right - he's forcing his mouth wide open coz his soft palate is flat and he won't get the note any other way. He's using so much muscular effort to heave his voice. It's really terrible technique. If he was a skinny little Englishmen no one would be interested in watching/hearing him.

La gente es muy envidiosa de quien sabes cantar bien... y no solo, porquè este hombre se sabe mover muy bien en el teatro... contrariamente a muchos otros companeros de opera que parecen mujeres en el teatro! Voz tiene, pero canta de una manera equivocada, corta muy rapido, no sostiene la voz, tiene que mejorar muchisimo su tecnica. Algunos piensan que con dar tonos altos o con potencia y ademas con buena pinta lo tienen todo. Grave error, a practicar mas Sr. Cura antes de dar conciertos lastimeros.

Mi primera maestra de canto,que era rusa decía que "mas voz tiene el burro".Tiene un instrumento vocal grande,pero no tiene ni idea de como manejarlo.

Well ok, here we at least get to hear Cura attempt to bring some leggato to the piece...which is unusual for him. I still feel he could have brought more drama and emotion ot the piece though. I mean this is a the last romanza Cavaradossi sings while facing certain death....his sawn song. This seems lost on Cura....but at least he gives us some singing as opposed to his usual shouting and rushing through music.

Caruso recien se perfeciono vocalmente en 1902, ya que su tecnica era muy pobre y le costaba los agudos, y en su tiempo la critica lo tiraba abajo..Ojo este es joven, recien comienza, no sea cosa que por que es Argentino estas criticas, no?

Es sólo un buen tenor, pero compararlo con Caruso, ya me parece demasiado, yo ya lo comparé en otros comentarios con Mario del Mónaco pero sólo por la personalidad, nada más que por eso. La crítica en Nápoles a Caruso lo tiraba abajo, bueno pero nadie es profeta en su tierra y menos en un de los lugares (Italia, Napoles) donde mas finamente se cata a los cantantes.

Jose Cura is a charismatic performer and a talented musician. However, his voice does seem to have declined somewhat. He was once heralded as the natural successor to Placido Domingo but I doubt if anyone sees him in this light. I love him in live performance but am not indifferent to the patchy quality of his singing at times.
For me he isnt hot enough becouse he needs more work on his voice... He drops out and in never bringing a correct legato! Whay only becouse that in his opinion a MACHO doesnt need to sing correct!!!??? Very awful! The voice is a good soundet one very beutiful timbre..but he needs a better voicecoach to show him how to improve into the old traditions !
Though many things are important in vocal performance - technical excellence, stylistic appropriateness, expressiveness, ability to move an audience, et al - the reality is that opera is losing audiences by the droves. Though we should always expect the best from artists, to find a singer like Cura who gets reactions from audiences such as those heard on this video is essential if opera has any hope of maintaining and developing a following for the future.
Another hispanic tenor who is decimating the beautiful Italian repertoire! The Italian repertoire has been under assault by hispanic tenors such as Domingo, Carreras, Villazon, Vargas, Cura..when will it end? If you have a voice like Fleta, Kraus or Aragall..sing as much as you want. If not, go sing mariachi tunes or rancheros!
Sometimes all it takes is a little nerve. Take risks. He doesn't seem fond of refinement and nuance, but he makes the most of the moment. Oh, yes, it's histrionic, but he pulls it off impressively!

As it is seen with many opera singers of today, they may have The Voice, but the lack of technique and much more than that, the lack of appropriate style makes them a lot less than they could be.
But it's not just their fault. Showbiz is -sadly- more important today than true quality.
There will not be any more Caruso or Gigli, or Callas.
I would have to agree with you about this performance, but i don't believe that there will not be great technicians such as Caruso and Callas anymore. If you would like to see some up and coming stars with amazing technique check out some of the tenors that studied at ava... how about James Vallenti and Stephen Costello for a start

I wasn't talking about the technique. It is more likely the style. And I don't doubt that theoretically there might be even better technique than that of Gigli for example. But one must really be good to achieve that.

I wouldn't say pop, but he doesn't really do much justice to this. Some of the vowels are really just plain wrong, and overmodified. I think he has a very good instrument, but he seems to be pushing the crap out of it constantly.

Pasa lo mismo que con Chélla mi creda. A mi modo de ver José Cura es un tenor lírico bastante bueno pero todavía no debería cantar estas arias dramáticas como E lucevan le stelle,vesti la giubba, ni Dio me potevi, ya que su voz juvenil todavía carece de los colores de la tragedia. Pienso que debería esperar a tener mas edad para que su voz se oscurezca de manera natural, si no, a los 50 años o antes perderá mucha calidad .
Senza dubbio un bel colore di voce... Ma avendo i fiati corti non riesce a rendere realmente tanto quanto hanno fatto i grandi della storia come Pavarotti, Del Monaco, Corelli, Bjorling e altri pochi. Ha un bel carisma, bella figura scenica ma non ha doti vocali particolarmente BRILLANTI. E' proprio vero che oggi come oggi non ci sono più tenori come una volta...

I almost fall out of my chair at 2:46, oh gosh, and then again at 3:03, regardless the phrasing, diminuendos, good technique whatsoever...which should not be commented here nor being mentioned. Seriously, whoever thinks Cura is a singer (it is implicit that is not good)...I don't know...I think in the end I am just really sorry for the orchestra...

The expression on his while finishing that high note in the middle shows such immeasurable satifaction. The control on the last note especially, and overall is UNREAL. It's hard to imagine what kind of hellish training she had to undergo to present us with this slice of heaven.

Cura is a much better actor than what he shows here. Concert v. stage always presents a difference in presentation. He did rush through this though. The camera work is very poor as they focused on his face instead of the entire body.
I will maintain that on stage he is the second best male actor in the history of opera behind Vickers.

This tenor is great, my favorite!!!. The sound in video doesn´t make justice to his voice. I had the record on CD and is great!!!. José Cura was very well recognized by Plácido Domingo. The version of this piece is one of his specialty. I love it.

perdonen los presentes pero considero esta interpretacion bastante aceptable aunque el principio no me convence demasiado la intencion es totalmente concorde con el area ,quiza no sea el tenor mas tecnico de la opera pero tiene un sentido del cantomuy artistico en cuanto a interpretacion ,sin embargo con eso no quiero justificar sus cadencias ,no creo q estemos frente aun tenor de la talla del monaco corelli o domingo ,pero si perfeccionara su tecnica no seria tan desvergonzada la comparacion

I don't know if the people who are commenting negatively are listening to the same video. He has way more dynamic contrast than most tenors who sing this. The first half of the aria sounds mp to me, very subdued and tragic.

Yeah you're right - he's forcing his mouth wide open coz his soft palate is flat and he won't get the note any other way. He's using so much muscular effort to heave his voice. It's really terrible technique. If he was a skinny little Englishmen no one would be interested in watching/hearing him.

La gente es muy envidiosa de quien sabes cantar bien... y no solo, porquè este hombre se sabe mover muy bien en el teatro... contrariamente a muchos otros companeros de opera que parecen mujeres en el teatro! Su Radames creo que sea el màs increible y perfecto que existe hoy en dia! Su voz en tan romantica que es dificil explicar las sensaciones que voy a probar cuando lo escucho!

Voz tiene, pero canta de una manera equivocada, corta muy rapido, no sostiene la voz, tiene que mejorar muchisimo su tecnica. Algunos piensan que con dar tonos altos o con potencia y ademas con buena pinta lo tienen todo. Grave error, a practicar mas Sr. Cura antes de dar conciertos lastimeros.

bueno la verdad, yo no entendia porque criticaban tanto a este tenorr en todoss lados (y sonaba bien los primeros segundos! pero despues la malogro por completo!!), ... pero ahora que lo escucho me doy cuenta que canta mal!!!, ni siqueira su voz es limpia, la fuerza a cada rato!!! y aveces se va de la afinacion!!... como no pueden darse cuenta??? es decir, le falta un monton para que ser considerado un buen tenor! tiene una voz grande y nada mas.

Well ok, here we at least get to hear Cura attempt to bring some leggato to the piece...which is unusual for him. I still feel he could have brought more drama and emotion ot the piece though. I mean this is a the last romanza Cavaradossi sings while facing certain death....his sawn song. This seems lost on Cura....but at least he gives us some singing as opposed to his usual shouting and rushing through music.

Caruso recien se perfeciono vocalmente en 1902, ya que su tecnica era muy pobre y le costaba los agudos, y en su tiempo la critica lo tiraba abajo..Ojo este es joven, recien comienza, no sea cosa que por que es Argentino estas criticas, no?

no no tiene nada que ver las criticas con que sea argentino. Dejemonoss de paranoia. Cura es así. Es sólo un buen tenor, pero compararlo con Caruso, ya me parece demasiado, yo ya lo comparé en otros comentarios con Mario del Mónaco pero sólo por la personalidad, nada más que por eso. La crítica en Nápoles a Caruso lo tiraba abajo, bueno pero nadie es profeta en su tierra y menos en un de los lugares (Italia, Napoles) donde mas finamente se cata a los cantantes.

Jose Cura is a charismatic performer and a talented musician. However, his voice does seem to have declined somewhat. He was once heralded as the natural successor to Placido Domingo but I doubt if anyone sees him in this light. I love him in live performance but am not indifferent to the patchy quality of his singing at times.

For me he isnt hot enough becouse he needs more work on his voice... He drops out and in never bringing a correct legato! Whay only becouse that in his opinion a MACHO doesnt need to sing correct!!!??? Very awful! The voice is a good soundet one very beutiful timbre..but he needs a better voicecoach to show him how to improve into the old traditions !

Though many things are important in vocal performance - technical excellence, stylistic appropriateness, expressiveness, ability to move an audience, et al - the reality is that opera is losing audiences by the droves. Though we should always expect the best from artists, to find a singer like Cura who gets reactions from audiences such as those heard on this video is essential if opera has any hope of maintaining and developing a following for the future.

The Italian repertoire has been under assault by hispanic tenors such as Domingo, Carreras, Villazon, Vargas, Cura..when will it end? As it is seen with many opera singers of today, they may have The Voice, but the lack of technique and much more than that, the lack of appropriate style makes them a lot less than they could be.
But it's not just their fault. Showbiz is -sadly- more important today than true quality.
There will not be any more Caruso or Gigli, or Callas.

I would have to agree with you about this performance, but i don't believe that there will not be great technicians such as Caruso and Callas anymore. If you would like to see some up and coming stars with amazing technique check out some of the tenors that studied at ava... how about James Vallenti and Stephen Costello for a start

I wasn't talking about the technique. It is more likely the style. And I don't doubt that theoretically there might be even better technique than that of Gigli for example. But one must really be good to achieve that.

I wouldn't say pop, but he doesn't really do much justice to this. Some of the vowels are really just plain wrong, and overmodified. I think he has a very good instrument, but he seems to be pushing the crap out of it constantly.

Has anyone ever heard of Pavarotti? Please stop clapping for and hiring this kind of singer, it will encourage more of them to appear. An out of tune, sloppy, scooping mess! I know he's pretty, but puh-leez, people! Take back the opera houses from these fools before it is too late!!!

Hate critiques, most useless people of the world! Doing nothing themselves, but always know exactly HOW shoud the artist sing, dance or make his paintings.

Oh, no! There would be more GREAT singers if more people thought my way. I am only critiquing the objective elements anyone can hear if thay listen: his pitch, rhythm, and inappropriate pop-style scooping. Every artist may have his own interpretation!

Man, why can't you understand that everything goes to its public? Jose Cura is good performer, he is tough by his nature, handsome and brave and full of life, that's the inspiration of him. And cause of that, his public forgives him some missed notes. There's no point to compare the guy with greates tenors. He is not like them, but still - people adore his art. That means - he touches souls, no matter how, but he does. DIXI.

Pasa lo mismo que con Chélla mi creda. A mi modo de ver José Cura es un tenor lírico bastante bueno pero todavía no debería cantar estas arias dramáticas como E lucevan le stelle,vesti la giubba, ni Dio me potevi, ya que su voz juvenil todavía carece de los colores de la tragedia. Pienso que debería esperar a tener mas edad para que su voz se oscurezca de manera natural, si no, a los 50 años o antes perderá mucha calidad .

Senza dubbio un bel colore di voce... Ma avendo i fiati corti non riesce a rendere realmente tanto quanto hanno fatto i grandi della storia come Pavarotti, Del Monaco, Corelli, Bjorling e altri pochi. Ha un bel carisma, bella figura scenica ma non ha doti vocali particolarmente BRILLANTI. E' proprio vero che oggi come oggi non ci sono più tenori come una volta...
