I certainly like the use of the bass and the percussion. the melody instrument sounds a little whiny though. using a different lead instrument for the melody will improve this song. none of the less though, you did this song quite well!
@MrBurgundy76 the original was so much better but good luck finding it with some ass taking remaking it or trying to make it themselves on some instrument when they suck
This is a good demonstration of how genesis music had a greater music FX chip. Maybe Snes chip had more "realistic" samples, but it crash mixed all toghether, they just don't work, and sounds like an old and broken Amiga computer!
I never realize how SOR music could sound in Snes, because it just can't.
Sonic 2 is another good example of how to do a great music with an 16 bits fx chip!
Point of the direction of some Genesis Doom and I'll tell you.
We weren't talking about Doom, though. We were talking about Castlevania Bloodines and Earthworm Jim, both of which sound awesome.
If we're gonna play that game, though, compare the awesome Spin On The bridge from Streets of Rage 2 (/watch?v=zsYcCtSgfF4&feature=related) to this SNES fan remix (/watch?v=bzoA_VAa-J0). Which sounds better?
@Kefka44 I think that's because of the low knowledge of the composers about the Fx chip.
SOR it's the best example, it's just awesome, Yuzo Koshiro used 100% of the potential: you can perfectly feel every bass hit, every drum and percussion, piano, guitar riffs... All mixed in a perfect and cool stereo sound, and many other details that were really imposible to do in SNES.
@Kefka44 Anyway Yuzo has demonstrated that genesis had a great FX chip, and if a game doesn't sound great, it's not a Genesis fault.
American programmers and composers made a really bad work in 16 bits era too... They used to program really awfull tunes that sounded as bad as distorted 80' computers, there's just a few games that had a legendary music (Lotus II, Toe Jam and Earl...), the rest were from japanese games
@segadreamer the SFX chip doesn't have anything to do with the sound. The SNES's Sound chip is separate from it's graphics. Then Explain why F-Zero, Megaman X, ActRaiser, Final Fantasy IV, V, VI, Chrono Trigger, Super Star Wars, Street Fighter II, and Super Metroid. all those games are in Stereo hell even Jurassic Park is in Surround Sound. I'm not really trying to argue here I'm just stating the Super NES could produce Stereo sound without using headphones.
Blech. Don't say Sonic and Mario in the same sentance. Unless, there beating eachother up or something. The two games music files should never be mixed. >.<
This however,is an exception. Great job,troysson. 5/5.
Oh my lord in Hell it sound so fucking out of tune it is making my ears bleed. Whoever's idea was to put Sonic the Hedgehog on the Super Nintendo is a fucking retard. Genesis FTW!
@troysson81 What's the point of voicing your opinion if you can't sound like an asshole if you want to? Telling someone how to voice their opinion is wrong and that is truly being an asshole, not voicing one's opinion even if it may be harsh.
the 32X doom was badly rushed and I mean badly, the mega drive was capable of 6 FM channels, 4 PSG channels and a PCM channel. Doom only used 3 channels for its music, enemy sprites were also missing, the sprites only showed the front of the enemies.
@troysson81 It's the instruments you used. Yes, it sounds like Super NES, but it sounds nothing like what a real developer would use if Sonic 2 was ported to the SNES.
sounds almost the same :) I don't like how the SNES sound chip was all muffled. it has good sounds but, the sound quality sounds a bit lossy. DAMN THAT SONY SPC700 CHIP! that's why I preferred the YM2612 chip which was in the mega drive.
@figaro589 You're getting confused. The megadrive soundchip had less range than the SNES, making the megadrive sounds more muffled. Compare the music from Donkey Kong Country or Streetfighter 2 to Sonic the hedgehog or Streets of Rage (just trying to remember some of the most impressive music for each system). E.g. Directly comparing the SNES to MD streetfighter 2 is a goodun. The megadrive soundchip was very restricted, although thats not to say that it didnt have charm.
I think he was talking about games liek Super Mario World. The instruments in that game didn't sound as lively as games like Sonic 3, Streets of Rage, etc. And SOR pushed the Genesis chip to it's limits. The SNES may have had a more advanced chip, the music sounded more lifeless. Then Donkey Kong Country came along and showed what the SNES could really do. Then you have Super Adventure Island. I'm sure there are more, but I'm not enough of a Nintendo fan to know them all.
@troysson81 In the same way that a real megadrive sounds different to emulation, the snes sounds different to emulation too! The snes had a filter that made sounds more punchy, despite being stored in a fewer number of bits. I suspect that you've been listening to snes music through emulation as opposed to the actual hardware. In contrast, megadrive emulation has allowed sounds to become clearer, although to be honest, I personally prefer the sound through the hardware it was designed for
@troysson81 Dya mean the Gameboy Advance? The sound for Super Mario World was terrible on that. Otherwise, I think we just have different ears. I tell you one thing we can agree on though. Sonic 1 music rocked!!
Funny you mention that because When I first saw Sonic and Knuckles back in 1996, I was unaware that there were Mushrooms in Mario. My assessment of Hill Top being similar to what's in a Mario game was back in 2001 which was 6 years after playing Super Mario Bros. at an old acquaintance's house before I moved to Dallas.
I certainly like the use of the bass and the percussion. the melody instrument sounds a little whiny though. using a different lead instrument for the melody will improve this song. none of the less though, you did this song quite well!

genesis didnt actually have a "soundfont", just a programmable synth. SNES had a sampler. That's why genesis music sounds "fat" and more original.
