Its NOT hard to play, but theres a specific rhythm that you have to keep AND the never forget: you dont steer the car but the environment around it, so it helps when youre a bit (or a lot) drunken.
I like to put on some ambient, droning music and play the endless drive variation. You just space out and you start to think some strange things, like who lives in those houses near the street? Are they angry that you are driving so fast and loud at this time of night? Where are the hamburger cars in such a hurry to get to?
technology at the time was ok IMO...my best games was raiders of the lost ark, pitfall, keystone kaypers and breakout...hys.. playstation x box will fade like many systems did.. Atari, Colecovision NES, genesis will always be classics..btw? your car looks like a cannon lol
Actually even GT6, or any game looks like this on the very first day of development...
This is the kinda concept that you give out to the programmer, you see the results a day after, and you jump into the harsh conclusion of "scrap the project while we can!", any age and state of technology.
I am glad you guys went away from your old openers. Watching this makes me feel like watching the opening to NOVA on PBS back in the 80's. I am waiting for Slim Good Body to come on after I watch your older reviews lol.
I actually have this game. I played it maybe twice. It was horrible. The controls were beyond clumsy. When you had other games like Demon Attack, Cops n' Robbers, Indiana Jones, Star Wars (The AT-AT battle one) there was no reason to play this poor excuse of a game. I played E.T. more than this game. Now bear in mind I did all my playing late at night. We lived next to a creek that I spent all my day's playing in with my friends. We didn't have any fat kids in my neighborhood.
I actually really liked this game and I think you just might not be very good at it. You have to slow down sometimes and you need to remember where the turns are. There are several different tracks. One of the settings allows you to hear oncoming cars honking, so you can avoid them.
But as a kid I wasn't sure if you are driving an artillery canon!
Mate, you are playing Game 1 with the difficulty in the "a" position. Any Atari Fan knows...unplayable. Try again in "b" and then the game plays at normal speed. My late mother hated it because "it was too realistic"!!
I've been playing this alot recently, and really enjoying it.
Those sudden turns to the right though.. they are impossible.. the game just seriously seems to be a little buggy in those: you can NEVER seem to move to the left quickly enough, unless you slow down a good bit more than normal.
I had this. Using the paddle was impossible with this game. I would keep this game back in, hoping that I would get it. Eventually, my patience lasted about 30 seconds until I remembered how brutal and unrewarding this game was. Plus, that sound when you crash with the flashing white screen always just made me anxious and want to play faster. Then I would crash again and again, becoming neurotic in the process. Finally, I gave up on Night Driver and played Superman and ET for the 2600.

He plays Custer's Revenge. No, actually there were some good games back then, but he's kind of an asshole so I say he's playing Custer's Revenge over and over again.
I´m a kid of the '90s. and I love old school gaming! Even I loved to play Atari 2600 games when my brother dusted off his Atari, I did enjoy them a lot :D
Like centipede, is one of my fav classic shooter games
@Trance1972 Well, I'm a "kid of the 90's" and the main thing I asked for Christmas was an NES. Today I picked up an Atari 2600. I own a SNES, NES, Atari 2600, and Sega Dreamcast.
@Trance1972 I like your user name. I hope you never sell your atari. :)
I popped in this game after not playing it since the early 80s and I actually played it for quite a while last night. I don't know what people are talking about, I think it's a nice game. Too me it's a classic but probably because it holds a nostalgic value to me.
Thankfully, I have NEVER had the misfortune to play this game. Seen snap shots and thought it was great from those. But, looking at the game in motion...WTF! This is some tweeker's heart rate going on overload! Everything comes at you so fast, dodging is impossible. Random chance is all there is. Thumbs down; no fun; end of line.
The Arcade version had no upcoming cars to avoid and also none of the decoration like houses and trees. Also it was in black and white (although it doesn't make lot of a difference). I think the road was narrower in the Arcade, so even without the upcoming cars it was propably harder than the Atari version.
Night Driver has been the first driving Arcade game that didn't use an overhead view but this "pseudo-3D" perspective style.
i do remember the original as well, the cool thing about it was just the illusion of driving in a "3D" environment, accented by the full size, 3- spoke steering wheel on the arcade cabinet
I totally agree about Pole Position and Enduro... I'm thinking about whether I should get Night Driver for my Atari 2600 or not, but hearing from a fellow Enduro fan that it's fun, I think I'll go for it.
Shit, this makes pole position look good...........remember those toys that could be bought for a kid, that was basically a device that went over a kids lap with a steering wheel with a screen with the blinking lights and sounds that made a kid feel like he was driving?...... Well even that may have had a leg up on this game!!! Keep your vids coming, we lovem!
Yeah I had this game.. and yes. it was tough.. I played it a hour and after that it was pointless. Same poles and houses and cars.. I sitl have it and my other 250 carts for the 2600 in the basement :)
