  • trombone is roy crimmins and bass is ron mathewson

  • trombone is roy crimmins

  • Music may come and go and change, but jazz stays the same.

  • I agree. If we had not had Louis Armstrong we would have had Henry "Red" Allen.

  • Definitely Roy Williams on trombone. I did a few gigs with Roy and Jimmy Douglas many moons ago. Jimmy still lives near me in Bedfordsire, Roy used to live in Luton. I also gigged with Roy's son Andy who had such a promising career on guitar, wonder what happened to him? Going back 20 odd years, hehe perhaps even 30 years. don't time fly when ur havin fun !!

  • Love this!

  • So nice to see and hear my cousin Al Gay on tenor sax. This was never his real name and like me changed it many years ago.

  • This is SO good. Red blows his socks off, and fair play to the Alex Welsh band, the best traditional jazz band ever to come out of the UK (well, Scotland mostly). Great stuff. Can listen to it all day. R.I.P. all you guys. See ya soon!

  • que maravilla!!! desde barcelona.

  • Red Allen never dates.

  • definitaley one of the best trumpeters of all time. Better than Satch IMO, but Satch will always be a master too.

  • @HepCat215 you're right, he was great. But better than Satch? Why compare the two?

  • @msailors exactly , I don't understand this tendency to compare and contest as if we are watching a football game. The good point is the joy of that moment now long gone yet recorded for us here where we can once again share in the pleasure together, strangers over time and distance. Stay on the good foot ,swinging ,man!

  • I really enjoyed it, this is one of the most perfect sound I ever, ever heared. god bless you in the sky sr red allen.

    DAVID

    U.S.A.

  • What talent they all had. Red was an original. And here he is shown with some of the greatest musicians England ever produced...."Herr Hastings" on drums - priceless!

  • Allen is beyond category, like Lips Page and Frankie Newton he was both traditional and very advanced at the same time, IMHO one of the greatest musicians EVER. Notice also that Allen does the NOLA routine that when a song is finished and had a lot of audience response (how could one resist ANYTHING Allen did), that they reprieve it with an "encore" of the song. Allen must of LOVED this band, a perfect swing band

  • trombone - Roy Crimmins

    bass - Ron Mathewson

  • sweet

    thanks fillra!

  • EXELENTE, muchas gracias..

  • isnt it Roy Williams on trombone?

  • In answer to the trombone and bass query in the description, I'm pretty sure that's Roy Crimmins on trombone and I'll have a go for Ron Matthiewson on bass before he went into the modern idiom with Ronnie Scott etc.

  • That is amazing - Lennie Hastings is my grandfather, and that is the first time in my life I've ever seen him other than in a photo. Wow! Thanks Pete York for that link!

  • Dear Anna

I played bass with Alex, but left before this great recording, and was best man at Lennie's second wedding.

He was a very, very good drummer and a

    great friend What wonderful memories.

    Best wishes

    Bill Reid

  • Your grandpappy is the shiz nit!

  • YES! Red is absolutely amazing. I'm loving this. Please post more! Thanks!

  • This is brilliant!

  • It doesn't get any better than this. Red is in great form- just listen to his phrasing on the last chorus and of course the great Lennie Hastings on drums driving that rhythm section. Nice solos by the rest of the guys. Good one Bob!!

  • GREAT GREAT post! thanks
