I remember seeing this commercial when it was new....as a 5 year old it really made me want to smoke. I would roll up paper and and make fake cigarettes....even a fake cigarette pack.
"M SQUAD", starring Lee Marvin, was primarily sponsored by Pall Mall {American Tobacco} during its original 1957-'60 NBC run. And, as was the custom, Marvin "shilled" for his sponsor's product at the end of the episode, and appeared in other Pall Mall commercials outside his series (Dale Robertson did the same on Pall Mall's "TALES OF WELLS FARGO" at the time). This is a 1958 ad; Ernest Chappell, "the voice of Pall Mall" in their commercials, is the announcer.
@fromthesidelines If cigarette ads were still on the air in the 1980's, you think Leslie Nielsen would have touted them? M SQUAD is considered the direct inspiration for the beloved cult series POLICE SQUAD!, which became the NAKED GUN film trilogy.
It looks and sounds like it's spelled "Pail Mail". Maybe it's just the crappy resolution of the video that makes it look like the 1st L of each word doesn't have the big serif. But that doesn't explain the weird pronunciation. I've always known it to be more like "paul moll".
@SpudMills The correct pronunciation is the one sounding here in this commercial. However those who haven't heard the right one (like in a commercial) often prefer to go the paul moll way.
@SpudMills what I have read is that pall mall is a famous area in london (or some where in England)....pronounced pell mell over there. Thats where the name came from
@SpudMills, mrdantefontana66 is right. It really is properly pronounced "pell mell," although it isn't spelled that way. It's a British name--there's a road in London by the same name.
Life is short. Lee was cool.

The proper way to say it is "Pell Mell" not "Paul Maul". When you hear people call them "Paul Maul" they are mispronouncing.

Back in the 50's, tough guys could smoke all the Pall Malls they wanted because they knew they could prevent lung cancer by drinking a lot of booze.

That's right folks after a hard workout at the gym, there's nothing faster to undermine that effort than with a fine Pall Mall cigarettte.
