@percyjacksonrocks101 you should watch Cesar Millan, no way should he be jumping on you. You need to be the pack leader, especially with such a strong breed, or he may jump on the wrong person, and you may be in for one heck of a liability.

My dog likes to catch the ball but then after catching it... drops it and loses interest. When the ball is thrown again she catches it again and drops it and loses interest.

Haha - It took me a year to teach my deaf english bulldog to retrieve. I had to teach him to play with an object. Then tug of war to excite him. Then taught him to put it in my hand. Then started throwing it a few inches. He finally will retrieve but after 3-4 times he is tired lol. It took lots of steps for the shaping.

Yeah.. my dog only cares about treats and if i try to bribe her into getting the ball she'll just jump on me ungtill I drop the treat at her feet. Therefor she is satisfied.

My dog has absolutely no interest in sticks, toys of any variety, rawhides, balls, etc. Even as a puppy....no interest. She is a Border Collie. I thought she is just weird, although I met a cattle farmer with a Border Collie who has no interest whatsoever in livestock. Anyway, this wasn't helpful in our situation. Any ideas?

I took my dog to a field today thinking she was ready to play some good ol' fetch, but she wasn't at all. She's three, smart when she wants to be, she knows 12 tricks but once it comes to being outside my golden retriever isn't remotely interested in the ball i throw, she runs off to eat geese poop & grass. It's disgusting & now i don't even wanna bring her to the park, because she might get sick from eating poop. UGH!

you shouldnt really use a stick, i know someone who threw a stick for their dog and it speared into the ground then when the dog went to grab it on the run the stick speared into the back of the dogs head and it had to be put to sleep, though it sounds like you would have to have bad luck for it to happen i think its worth just throwing a ball.

IF your dog fails to return the ball as you want. i nifty trick is to spray him or her in the face with OC Pepper spray. that way they cant see where to run and it is easier to get the toy from them. rinse their eyes out and repeat.

@wo0ter: If your dog drops the ball before getting to you, don't give him the treat. He's got to do the job to get the reward. If you don't give him the treat unless he completes the action, he'll quickly learn what he has to do. Make sure he brings the ball to you and gives it to you in "exchange" for the treat. Hope this helps.

I have a question. I just started teaching my 9 year old foster dog how to fetch, and he's picking it up surprisingly fast! I finally got him interested in chasing and carrying around a tennis ball. However, after he's picked up the ball and starts running back to me for a treat, he drops the ball when he's halfway there. How can I get him to drop the ball in front of me or in my hand? Thanks!

@yenrayNg the trainer shows how to get the dog interested in the object. if its a ball you kick it and start off rolling the ball from the dog then throughing it. almost the same as a stick but hold it and drag it across the ground, most dogs will chase it around then a light toss to a long through. great videos on here and this is a good one to learn from for fetch.

my dog will run to the toy, sniff it and wont bring it back, instead he goes to the fridge, leaves it open and leaves it unattended, he then goes at back and goes on joy rides with my car, returning at around 2 am and with the tank empty, the then drink about 10 beers and makes alot of noise while i try to sleep. finally at about 4 am he pushes me out of bed and sleeps there,i have no other choice but to sleep in his bed, my back is suffering so much, hopefully this fetch trick will help

Dangerous, Dangerous using a stick ! If you have ever seen a dog injured through either retriever a stick or just playing with it, you'd refrain from using. This only encourages dogs to pick up sticks whilst out .... they are a hazard.
