It's easy to forget just how great the Commodores were before Lionel Richie left the band. They were a horn band. They were a funk band. They were a ballad band. I'd call Sweet Love "Gospel influenced soul". Whatever it is, it works. Richie's solo stuff is nice, but the solo stuff never generated same A-level live band feeling that the Commodores could bring to the table.
