Mga Karunungan sa Larong Arnis, by Placido Yambao. Copyright 1957, University of the Philippines.
Translated as A Body of Knowledge in the Sport of Arnis, Written in archaic Tagalog. The first widely released documentation on FMA. The first publication to mention the word kali. Book Editor, Buenaventura Mirafuente, wrote the short section on the history of arnis, asserting that kali was the original name of arnis at the time the Spaniards came.
I'm not sure of the history of the word Kali with Mindanao but one theory is that Kali comes from the combination of the words Kamot and Lihok (KAmot LIhok) and most reference books that I've read on the subject say that the Southern Filipino Arts tend to be referred to as Kali. I can't vouch for the accuracy of any of it but it is what I've heard from my instructor whos father and uncle were Filipino historians
Kali, really come from Mindanao...they erere the arts of the native of Kalaga provinces. They were once called "The land of the braves and fierce people" Maradjao Karadjao ! Kalagan warriors
Master Sulite+ (sumalangitnawa) is right... We really have 87 dialects not mentioning the sub-dialects of other indeginous tribes, weather it is KALI, ARNIS, ESCRIMA ect. it is all in the name " don't fuss about about it". (bruce lee). Salamat Po At Mabuhay Po ang lahing Pilipino.
I grew up in Mindanao, Davao City to be exact, for the first 14 years of my life. I've never once heard the word "Kali". I asked my Dad (now 71 yrs old), who lived all over Visayas and Mindanao (Himamaylan, Bacolod, Cagayan, Iligan, Marawi, among others) and he's never heard of "Kali" either. The only martial art term (referring to FMA) that my dad knows is "Eskrima".
first time I ever asked my uncle to teach me boxing he told me, "oh so you want to learn how to fence." I was liie fencing?!!! fencing???! I want to learn boxing!!!
I was clueless eheheh. Maraming salamat po Punong Guro Sulite your spirit continues to inspire us all!
@draculium I have yet to meet any practitioner of traditional eskrima who is 60 years old or older in the Visayas or in Mindanao who calls it "kali." Malibog ra intawn sila kung dis-a na gikan nga pulonga.
Not really. Silat and FMA have the same roots (both Malayan). Different influences have caused them to divergently evolve, but the underlying themes are all still the same. This is why someone trained in SIlat can cross train very easily in FMA, and have the arts become extensions of each other (and vice versa). Great example is a lot of the Lacosta Escrima stuff that Dan Inosanto teaches, especially empty hand, is VERY silat influenced, but still works withing the FMA framework.
To be precise, this is from PG Edgar first video "Lameco at the Vortex" which I produced for him back around 1991-92. The excerpt which you see here also appears in our newest DVD "The Snaggletooth Variations"
