Wow dudes it's only a contest. It's not the end of the world. I for one will just continue to build amps because I enjoy doing it. The bottom line is I will shop where I get the best price and customer service.
I will never do this again!! People gave their freinds 5 starts and had them give real contetsent 0 or 1 stars just so their friends could win. Tube depot should have given the prizes to to who they wanted and not on votes of people that did not play fair. I am so disapointed with the winners, if you can call them winners, and the way this contest was run that I will never buy anything from tube depot again!
Were you the guy who built that Fender clone with the caps you encapsulated in blue plastic? I'm a fellow cloner and that amp blew my mind - it was absolutely incredible. You didn't demo it but that wasn't explicitly part of the rules. Do you have a website of this build and any others?
It is good to know that I wasn't the only one impressed by his attention to detail. It is a fantastic and faithful reproduction. I hope he reposts his video so more people can see it.
As part of the DIY community myself, I personally feel that everyone that entered the contest was a winner. Winners not by number of mere stars, but winners because this contest allowed us all to admire their amp, their art. Hopefully everyone will continue to build art for the rest of the DIY community to admire.
Interesting contest. Certainly highlighted projects with hours of hard work from talented people, each unique and should be awarded something just for their efforts. However Im disappointed in the overall outcome of the contest. The rules stated seemed clear enough to follow, some chose not to follow them including Tube Depot. (cont...)
This from your rules: Your video must begin with a statement on-camera from you: "This video is my entry in the Tube Depot. com Tube Project Video Contest." Review your 1st place winner. He did not say the above sentence in quotes correctly? The 2, 3, 4 and 5 place video entries did, word for word. Vote for your favorites This became more about slamming the competition than voting for the favorite. (cont...)
Also, per your comments, if you were looking for specific things within a project, it should have been mentioned to give one an equal chance for their project. Competitions are great things they just need to be fair so one has a chance to show their creativity.
mindlessLemming did a very good job with his amp build. He showed the inside of his amp as well as described the steps he went to construct it. And even better, he played the amp himself and it sounded good. I personally liked the outcome. I will be having other contests so by all means, get your friends to view your video and rate - Robert Hull
Doesn't seem worth entering if it's going to be a popularity contest. Second place didn't even show the amp's guts, just played with cheesy camera effects.
2nd place did show the internals of his amp, 3rd place did not. Again, I will be giving away more stuff in the future, so please enter your great video. I personally love homebuilt, DIY stuff, and even if someone doesn't win, I am honored to see their art.
That's nice of you to say but I'm sorry, until I can refer hundreds of people to my video, why waste the time? Next time I'll put a 5E3 circuit in a He-Man lunchbox, show the guts, play it through an ugly 1x12 with an even uglier guitar and I've got first place. There were far better entries than that thing.
Have a think about it... Why would Tube Depot run such a contest besides encouraging DIY valve projects? Advertising and brand exposure. The more people who see the entries and the name Tube Depot, the better. Yes, a lot of people saw my entry. Yes, a lot of people rated it highly. But you know what? Every single one of them plays guitar and 99.99% of them own at least one tube amp. They're all potential customers who now hold Tube Depot in a positive light for holding such a generous contest.
Exactly. Essentially you've been paid for the exposure which is another reason why (maybe now former) TubeDepot patrons are alienated. It's clearly only about who brings in the most views. I didn't enter my video once I suspected you and your Australian "g'day mates" would sweep the contest.
I think a recycled lunch box would make a great amp! Do they still make metal lunch boxes? A paralleled 12AT7 driving a reverb transformer into an 8 ohm speaker would yield about a watt. Now that would be cool. Maybe that could be the next video contest ... "The Most from 1 Watt".
"and the winner with 5 times as many views and ratings all from Australian referrals (drum roll) Mindlesslemming and his G'day Mate Lemmings!" Why freakin bother?
When I went to the Rendezvous, it took about 17 seconds for them to spot me as a New Yorker. But they treated me right anyway. And they deliver via FedEx.
It doesn't matter where someone is from. In the South, if their smile is honest, they will be treated like family. It is all part of Southern Hospitality.

Don't be ridiculous. My entry began with "This is my entry in the Tube Depot video contest".

Contest outcome was a bit diasappointing! All you needed was your friends from Australian 'net forums to give you 5 stars!

+1! I'm not going to enter any more of these contests until I get 1000 more friends to vote for me or the winner is chosen by an unbiased judge.

tube amp guys always seem to be biased. ha.
