I played Clarinet when I was middle school, but dropped playing when I went to high school since it lacked a proper concert band (You either had to march or not play at all, since what was listed as concert band was really just warm-up lessons for marching band kids). I'm almost 23, so it's been almost half my lifetime since I had a clarinet in hand, but suddenly I miss it so much.
Good for you! I'm performing this on my Master's recital in two days and the pesky final F-sharp really scares the crap out of me. And your pacing is very good in fact, but I was encountering the same thing! lol. Check out the alto sax version of it. Definitely gave me some new ideas!
i own a pink clarinette im quite good i played in primary now in the academy the class is forming a marchin band (just mi class)and i play the clarry!!
I'm trying to learn that piece myself, but I'm having a bit of a hard time with it. I got the piece this past Tuesday, and so far, I can SORT OF play the first two pages. So, if anyone has any kind of insight into this piece, that would be great. :)
its generally good. One thing I'd say is to do the markings she writes...which is so simple to say. haha. but really, joan tower wrote precisely what she wanted, so be sure to execute it. For instance, on the third page, the triplets-make sure to do the tenudos. not just hints of tenudo...but really hold them out.
nice performance over all. you have the basic idea of the piece, i think just more polishing will get it to sound even better.
Perform it on the bass clarinet? Gosh, That would be a lot harder! I hate bass clarinets! They just seem to suck air out of you, I find that with all lower instruments really. I couldn't last 9 minutes with a piece like that. Especially not live!
It was actually re-written by the composer for solo saxophone. It doesn't go as high as the clarinet part goes, (because that would be kinda crazy) but it is essentially the same thing.
Thank you very much! It is a very difficult piece to perform, mostly in terms of endurance. I hope to better pace myself the next time I play it live, and one day I'd like to perform it on bass clarinet.

Where do you go to school? I'm guessing you are getting a degree in performance to play this piece so well :-)
