I know Apache pilot like to fly more than every other helicopter pilot, not just because of they can blow stuff up, it is because it is the only Army helicopter that has an actually working air conditioning in it....cool in summer and warm in winter......I work on those, so I know....I'm the one doing troubleshoot those damn ECS (Environmental Control Systems)...an Army way of saying AC...
One of the bennies of working the "heavies" (h-3, H-53 types) was being able to ride along once in a while. In my 9 1/2 years as a maintenance crew chief, I got about 300 hours including inflight refuelings.
When I was in, the Cobra pilots used to FORCE crew chiefs that they didnt trust to ride in the gunners seat with them on test runs. It was like their way of saying:
"If I go down in this thing because you fucked it up, Im taking your incompitent ass with me"
@starguard I never refused to fly on anything I worked on. If a flight crew member doesn't trust my work (and I never had that problem) they could go back to their coffee pot and let me do their jib.

@flynmid Pilot is ending his/her patrol he/she has X amount of fuel left, a call comes in a unit hit a IED they are ambushed, Apache goes to give air support, the FOB where the chopper can refuel is Y distance. Apache expends half its ammunition which makes the chopper lighter. how much longer can it say on station providing air support before having to leave. Note the troops on the ground are still under fire and you are the only one able to provide support. continued.
@flynmid the pilot and gunner are currently providing air support the peeps on the ground lives depend on it, their is no time to do a math chart on paper, these calculations must be done in the pilots and or gunners head while they provide air support.
@Baseshocks Everything now is done by the computers in the a/c. In the past they didn't have this. You make it sound difficult, but they plan all these situations out beforehand. If they have to make difficult calculations there is actually plenty of time. They don't get from one target to the next instantly.

On top of that Math is in the ciriculum in the Military Collage that most officers go threw ether that or have a Civi degree. As for NCM's flying choppers i heard of it but do not know much about it.

I find it fascinating to talk about this stuff cuz I used to work on the avionics and electrical systems of the very aircraft you saw. I know the pilot and the crew chief and was in that unit. Sadly I never flew. Really cool stuff. Have made a lot of theoretical connections since I've started electrical engineering school. The AH-64D is still amazing to me, even when it breaks and nobody can figure it out.

The various systems processors and controllers will perform all the high-level trig, calculus and linear algebra. Firing solutions and maximum endurance are things best left to computers these days.

What??? I spent 6 years in the army as a 15Y (AH-64D Armament/Electronics/Avionics tech) and I've never seen a unit let their maintenance personnel go airborne in a 64. Let alone in a combat zone!!! Lucky motherfuckers.
For the record, this is very uncommon, and a huge deviation from the standard "beatings shall continue until morale approves" leadership approach from officers... the chain of command in that unit must be extremely cool. Looks like a 1/227 aircraft from 1st Cav.

So are Apache gunners and pilots interchangeable? He said he rarely gets to bring anybody other than "other Longbow" pilots up, but obviously they fly with a gunner in the front cockpit, last I knew. I remember reading that in WWII P-61 radar operators and pilots were both trained to perform both duties and would trade off every other mission. Don't know if that's true, but it seems possible.

Awwww damnit, I want to ride in an Apache. Best experience I have about an Apache was in the middle of the desert, a Senator wanted to visit some damn ruins, so we had to pull security. The Apaches, upon leaving, did a fly by from about 30 feet away from my MRAP. Atleast I was the gunner so I got to see it.

What??? I spent 6 years in the army as a 15Y (AH-64D Armament/Electronics/Avionics tech) and I've never seen a unit let their maintenance personnel go airborne in a 64. Let alone in a combat zone!!! Lucky motherfuckers.
For the record, this is very uncommon, and a huge deviation from the standard "beatings shall continue until morale approves" leadership approach from officers... the chain of command in that unit must be extremely cool. Looks like a 1/227 aircraft from 1st Cav.

@glitch010 I was an Armament Dawg too and all I got was simulator time when I was in 6-6 CAV in Germany. I rotated to THIS unit after I left Europe and regretted it. We had a good Armt Pltn, but PC office micromanaged shit too much. I'm really surprised this happened seeing how they loved to shit on junior soldiers and NCOs.

So are Apache gunners and pilots interchangeable? He said he rarely gets to bring anybody other than "other Longbow" pilots up, but obviously they fly with a gunner in the front cockpit, last I knew. I remember reading that in WWII P-61 radar operators and pilots were both trained to perform both duties and would trade off every other mission. Don't know if that's true, but it seems possible.

Awwww damnit, I want to ride in an Apache. Best experience I have about an Apache was in the middle of the desert, a Senator wanted to visit some damn ruins, so we had to pull security. The Apaches, upon leaving, did a fly by from about 30 feet away from my MRAP. Atleast I was the gunner so I got to see it.

In the Air Force you only get incentive rides if you're a nonner. Maintenance guys never got them. Hell had one actually blow the canopy off one and put it out action for a good 6 months lol. Good on Apache pilots for giving the right people rides.

The Apache WAH 64 British Forces attack helicopter was made by AgustaWestland. It so happens Agusta sorted out the reliability issues with original longbow.
