I'm of the opinion that what is going on here is not an issue of accent. It's lack of mastery over the English language. It's like a Spanish person who says "me no speak English." this isn't a matter of improper accent. The language itself isn't mastered let alone the accent with which the expressions are made. I used to work with a dude from Ghana and he's been a Canadian citizen for 25 years. Couldn't fucking understand a single word this fucking guy said. If you're in a country for 25-30 years and you haven't lost your accent then you're not even TRYING!!! My parents are originally from India and have been here for forty years and I wouldn't say that they have a Canadian accent but they damn sure don't sound like Apu from the simpsons.

@Mesmerrai It depends on the Ghanaian. To a villager, Akan or another local language is "their language". But to a city dweller, which 90% of the immigrants you will meet are likely to be, English is the language they use the most, it being the national language and naturally the common language which all tribes (at least in the cities and surrounding areas) can speak. When you grow up with a language, and speak it more than anything, it's "your" language!
