@PinkFloydFan95 Check out my other videos - there are reviews of the previous Immersion sets. The Wall has been ordered - so subscribe to keep up with the updates!
Whenever I hear someone say "too long" or "embarrasing" when talking about a classic prog album such as PF's AHM I can only say the album is being over analyzed. The band got into a great groove so sit back, relax and enjoy the album.
Another thing I don't understand is this "musicianship" thing. "Between Piper and Meddle the band weren't very good players", "They were stumbling around". Are you freaking kidding me?!
Anyone who can play a song well has got to be a good musician, ain't it?
@vrooomuk I just happen to adore every note in this particular album. That's all. Please don't stop making videos because of what I said. The last thing I need is crowds of people chasing me down the street blaming me for depriving them of their most thoughtful reviewer on YouTube. Thank you!
It's not an amazing album but it's damn good. Perhaps the track "Embryo" would have made a good beginning to side two. Anyway the live BBC recordings from this period are fantastic. "fat old sun" stretched out to a 10 to 15 minute workout.
Nice review, Atom Heart Mother its a great album, i enjoyed all of it, the Suite, Summer 68 and Alans Psychedelic Breakfast are just three awesome prog/symphonic rock pieces..Good work Darren and keep doing this kind of stuff...
The one I've been waiting for! Thanks for this, Darren. Love your videos, and always interested to hear your thoughts on what is one of my favourite Pink Floyd albums. It was my first real Floyd record, so I will always have a deep love of it. "If" is pretty, if naiive, and "Summer '68" is a voice from Wright's future. The solo on 'Fat Old Sun' is one of Dave's greatest moments, but come on. Some love for APB, surely? "Morning Glory" is just gorgeous. Put it on as the sun rises on a Sunday.
@CalentureAU Bits of APB are good, but as a whole it is filler. I just find it too gimmicky - though at the time I expect it would have been a revolutionary end to an LP.
Fat Old sun and summer 68 make this album worth having. IF is okay to. Not their greatest album but all Floyd Albums have at least 3-4 gems on them. But I agree that those filler songs are craptatsic.
Go find the KQED live performance Pink Floyd did for the Atom Heart Mother song. Its the band itself with no orchestra. Quite interesting to listen to and quite well done.
Pink Floyd is and will always be my favorite group of all time. Early Floyd is interesting for sure and some of it is my favorite stuff they have done (Like "More") but I gotta say that Atom Heart Mother is honestly my least favorite album of theirs. That's not to say it's bad by any means but I don't like it as much as the others.
The atom heart mother suite is very interesting to me but it all falls down when the weird choir comes in, for me "If" "Summer of 68" and "Fat old sun" are the songs that carrie the weight of the album.
In my opinion (meaning you probably don't have the same opinion as me, and it doesn't matter that we think different things) here are my 5 favorite PF albums:
5. Dark Side, The Wall, Wish You Were Here- all in same place, just because I know them so well.
4. Animals
3. Atom Heart Mother
2. Meddle
1. The Final Cut- I know a lot of people hate it, but I think it is the most creative lyrically and the most personally.
And my least favorite is Momentary Lapse, I just can't seem to get into it!
@wavid117 The Final Cut is certainly underappreciated. I wouldn't call it the best, but I see why you would. Momentary Lapse is really just two or three good tracks and a lot of filler.
@joethulhuz Yeah, I mean it certainly isn't the best in terms of instrumental and musicianship, but I connect with Roger Waters a lot on that record. Plus Gilmour's harmonizing solos on that record kick butt! And yeah Momentary Lapse- I can't stand the " A New Machine" Things, they're just weird, but the song inbetween is pretty good.
Thanks, Darren! I literally laughed out loud when you referred to "Piper" as the Floyd "stumblin' around" ...
