@EyeAmbivalenceEye I never even brought up Marxism or compared it to communism in my comment. I was just pointing out that you misinterpreted the meaning of the song. Was your comment a response to someone else?
@EyeAmbivalenceEye. This has absolutely nothing to do with communism. It has to do with mass produced suburbs like "Levittown". It was written in 62 as a criticism of the homogeneity of suburbia. So it speaks volumes about the American dream & conformity. ( and you could argue racism as well).
I sing this song quietly to myself while I have my customer's on hold...it helps ease the frustration & reminds me that they don't realize but they're in those little boxes when the go nuts about their wireless bills, or just say, "I want, I want, I want..."
in my old office there was a cd player in the closet on repeat and that was the hold music that would play, they'd change the cd every month or so.
when the company was doing bad i was sure i'd be the first to get laid off (front desk guy), so i burned 5 black sabbath cds and 5 iron maiden ones, and put them unmarked in the drawer where all the other cds went. day i was let go, popped in the black sabbath, almost a better feeling than severance pay.
RIGHT! Hackers and crackers of the I-nation, go forth and change all waiting music into Little Boxes, starting, of course, with the Real Estate companys
Many of the exterior shots of the show are filmed on location in and around the bedroom community of Stevenson Ranch, California and Santa Clarita, California.
The aerial photo during the intro is of Calabasas, California
I just like the idea of having a lot of different people singing this almost forgotten little folk song about the creepy sameness of suburbia... and how it is just as true today as maybe 20 or 30 years ago when the song was written. probably more so.
Actually, it was written nearly *50* years ago, right when "suburbia" was a new term. Old folk songs from the 50s, 60s, and 70s are ALL so relevant today. I'm glad this show got people to pay attention to that genre.
me too. i love how it reeks of sarcasm. it's hard to listen to it without looking at suburbia from a critical perspective. and it's perfect for the show...
her voice is gold. she is also extremely unique looking. in a good way

At Stevenson Ranch, the great oak was killed by John Laing Homes, with John Quigley as a tree sitter. Shame on JLH.

Just saw Joan in concert and went looking for videos and hit this. One of my favorite AM radio songs from the early 60's! (I don't get HBO)
leslieclark54 3 years ago 2
Lol, did this show just get random famous people to sing the same song for each new season?
I know there's a Shins, Deathcab and Spektor opening of this song....I find that highly entertaining for absoloutely NO reason
