@TraceurMeeka agreed with ShiroiLuke. I recall that conservation between Ikkaku and Renji too; following the timeline, Ikkaku should actually be able to perform bankai at this point.
its just that his pride won't allow it he only uses it in places that he know people want jump in and see it he prefers to fight like kenpachi and not relying on his zanpakto and as such he will only use his shikai for battle
thats why he used bankai in the battle with that volcano arrancar because everyone was fighting a powerfull opponents at that moment so he was in the clear to use his own
only 2 people in the show know he can use it maybe 3

@HaloLvl43Legit even if Ikkaku would have used Bankai, Ichigo would find a way to win because it was in the will of the Hogyoku..Aizen mentions in it in a fight with Ichigo that his matches were staged because that was what Aizen desired, a strong opponent to test his powers on..
