But if you don't want to play then I'll tell, he's what's called a Genome, a genetically engineered creature meant to become essentially the angel of death after his brother Kuja. The tail is a feature of all genomes.

Garnet, Yuna and Lightning aren't useless, Garnet because you'll be screwed if you never use your White Mage, you'll burn items like no tomorrow, and she learns some offensive spells (summons) later on, Yuna is important for similer reasons (her and Garnet along with Eiko are a White Mage Summoner hybrid) but because of how summons work in X she's arguably the most powerful party member in it. and Lightning is just plain badass
