  • the new psp might utilize something like this. it has a back touchscreen, so

  • Oops, this device doesn't exist yet - instead, here's 3 devices glued together.

  • what a fucking useless invention. I hope you guys didnt spend much money developing this, seriously you'd make more money investing in chocolate fire guards or inflatable dart boards.

  • Ooooor you can have a see through OLED screen. :3 Much more conventional.

  • With all due respect, this thing is so fucking useless it should be trashed.

  • laaaaaaggg

  • This is really pretty useless. But research is always good.

  • sorry this is shit

  • instead of suing a camera why couldn't you just use 2 touch screens hooked into one input?

  • gayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

  • A webcam connected to a touch screen connected to a screen.

  • WTF at @1:18! how the hell we grab the device if every touch is sensed and will reflect as commend on device!?!?

  • 1:30 GOATSE

  • hey thats so cool!! this should be more small thinner and looks more like tony stark's transparent pda from iron man 2!and can hack other computer device!

  • Although impractical with a rediculous sized fucking camera attached, it could be useful when improved and ofcourse made smaller. Although once improved, they should do the world a favor and not sell this idea to Apple and their faggot ass iShits. The last thing they need is a way to improve the iPad, big useless ass device.

  • nost retarded thing ever created

  • BULL CRAPE

  • this will be inplemented in islate, im so certain about it

  • this is the dumbest device ever...i dont care what the back of my hands are doing...they just sit there...and y would i want a huge camera in the back...if you drop it on a bed it will probably break...this is going no where...they obviously didnt think this one out...i will never be able to fit it in my back pocket!!!! im sorry person but this is not a good video!!!!!!

  • Pay better attention to 0:52 to 1:04. Of course this device would "probably break" -- it's a prototype rig. Did you ever see an early prototype mobile phone? Twenty years ago people probably thought they would never be able to fit that in their back pocket.

Who knows if these guys are on to something important here or not, but at least they're trying.

  • wow that is ingenious i hope that will be true

  • this is really cool, especially the little things like stretching objects when they're in the mid-screen, that's a good idea :D

  • This will be a great idea to improve on for the furture as touch screens from the front your fingers blocks the content you selecting with this idea it's GREAT

  • typing on the rear of a deice is inpractical.

  • maybe use pressure sense gloves?

  • what are you gonna do with this is you ever get it ? NOTHING . It just doesn

t do anything just show your hands . Wow. .. NOT.

  • funny, but not very compact ;)

  • Wow, that mobile device is SO compact.

It'll fit in your pocket FOR SUURE!

  • ROFLOL

  • fail..

  • this thing is fucking useless no lie guys

  • wow the flying car type futur is near

  • They already made a flying car, now there making flying boats.

  • the fingers on the back are very limited in movement as we see when he rotates the map, i think it also feels awkward, i don't think it'll be very useful in the mobile devices. 2 thumbs on the front can do most of the things in the front, but although using the back allows for 8 combinations of input simultaneously it would be a hard feat to learn. BMI may outpace this tech.

  • lol

  • epic fail. at 0:45 you see a stick under the bottom of the device. it connects to a lump thing which you see at the left had side. that should be a camera, which records hands or whatever else happens to be there and sends it to the "phone" via the stick.

  • it is a camera. they even say it is

  • its about as mobile as the entire united kingdom

    its huge!

  • the guy talking is the guy with the athiest videos

  • theres gota be a way to do this whitout a camera, by using another touch screen in the back of the device. it would make it way smaller

  • but then you'd need to flip it over to see where you were clicking and that would defy the entire purpose... but I still can't wait to get my hands on this thing(pun intended) once they find a way to get the camera off the back,

  • that thing is kinda massive...

  • You guys need much much more ram, fps, and higher megapixel camera. I got really antsy looking at the fingers on the back.

  • This thing is crap!!!!!

  • Gay.

  • yeah... that's true

  • When you said see through, I actually expected something actually see through, with some text or something there. This works too though. :P

  • I don't like it at all.

  • thaT THING IS TOO BIG

  • Microsoft and Apple are the same company they just say it is to promote competition.

  • For now, a less sophisticated way to "see" keys on the back of a device is to put decals on the front which show the character location. That's how people learn to use an AlphaGrip, a handheld keyboard and mouse that looks like a game controller, which has 12 keys on the back (including 8 rocker keys) and 18 keys plus a trackball on the front, which enable comfortable, hi-speed typing at 50+ wpm and 10-finger-control gaming, while standing, reclining, lying down, or sitting anyhere.

  • really cool

  • good concept

  • Hahaha it has a camera behind!

  • This is just stupid.

Apple's multi-touch conquers this on so many levels. Not to mention thats a entirely new way to type, which might have a hard learning curve.

  • onbe of the one si dont think will ever take off. i mean you could just use a stylus for more accuracy and even if you want that background touch the device is still going to be big and cumbersome. neat idea but no real practical purpose i can see...

  • ...Yeah it's ok...but only for a prototype.

I'm looking forward to what it could be. Keep up the work!

  • Thats huge!

  • Not just ugly, but bulky!

  • that's why they call it prototype, u moron

  • I think it would be much easier/logical to improve on regular touch screens. I don't see the advantages of having a screen operated from behind. A stylus easily fixes the imprecision of fingers.

  • this sounds too hard to use :S and I don't mean that I don't understand, I mean it's not taht good of an Idea, I had and idea but it only works with desktop PCs, I'll post the idea on a Video some day ^^

  • Wouldn't you get cramp from using that as a computer? If you think about how much you would probably use it it could get uncomfortable.

  • wouldnt the cramp you fingers

  • That is brilliant. I can't wait until the concept is used with Touch sense on the back (as opposed to a huge camera, of course!). This will make typing with a real keypad possible, with some nicely designed interfaces, this should make things like the iPhone even more fun + efficient to operate.

  • Wow whoopty doo. There's a big fcuking camera sticking out the back of the unit! A shitty little webcam at that.

  • revolutionary? It's as big as a toaster!

Just kidding, thats actually pretty cool

  • erm... how exactly is the fake hand shadow on the screen NOT occluding things? - This prototype doesn't fix the issue, and despite that, decreases usability & intuitiveness

  • You can see through the shadow form of the hands in the back, unlike your hands.

  • I think as a prototype, they spent little time on hardware/speed/graphics (like transparency etc.)

I would guess OS designers, like Apple, would take care of things like having nice transparency on the finger, something that is subtle but doesn't obstruct the use...

doesn't sound like a horrible problem to have to fix.

I'd guess one would likely stick with single-handed function, but then switch to this to type very fast.

    Would be cool for videogames!

  • seems extremely slow in it's frame-rate. guess that will be improved hopefully... nice idea though.

  • dont you get it right? it is a prototype. In the same way that adaptive camouflage is demostrated with a video recorder in your back and a tv in your tummy, it is the IDEA. In the research that is scaled down in fiber optics and graphic microprocessors from the concept. The same here. The optic sensor was a webcam in the demonstration, but it could be replaced by anything.

  • What a piece of complete techno crap! I could have built a better one in my garage with a soldering iron and some beer cans! It's so cheap you can see your fingers though it! Now if that ain't crap, what is?

(disclaimer: I just wanted to to see how long it takes for the censors to give me thumbs down, ;-))

  • CAN U GET A LAUGH BITCH?

  • u bitch! i didnt swear u!...

AND! BTW!... nowhere in the video says! THIS IS A PROTOTYPE!... =) thank u! ITS HORRRID!

  • Play the video between 0:53 and 0:54. The narrator says, "the lucid touch prototype".

  • Ya people don't get that this is a PROTOTYPE. The idea is that they have taken readily available hardware, developed some software, and put it all together to create a demonstration. This is not what will hit the market. This is just to give people an idea of what is to come and the possibilities of software for it. Like he said, it wont use a camera, it'll use some other sort of technology.

  • uglllyyy

  • oh man... goatsee

  • I see a goatse reference :(

  • I read some of these comments and I wonder if people missed the part about how the developers want to use sensors other than a camera in the future. In this video they are simply demonstrating a new input paradigm.

  • This reminds me of how I'm doing air conditioning tutorials in the nude.

  • great...when they finally finish that new technology, I'm gona have to buy yet another iphone. I'm sure all of our phones will have the see through touch screens

  • you were stupid enough to buy an iphone?

  • It has a beautiful, futuristic and efficient user interface, enough reason to get one. And the NES emulator is cool. I am getting one in six months, for free.

  • Yep...stupid enough. But smart enough to do it the day after they dropped the price $150. now watch, with my luck they will drop it another $150. then I will feel stupid.

  • that webcam was funny as hell

  • pretty cool gadget too bad id have to hire someone to lug that big piece of shit around for me

  • Awesome. It's almost as usefull as a mouse.

  • lamesauce, sorry.

  • Not Practical

  • Revolutionary design?????

    are you fucking kiding?!!!

im having nightmares with this piece of shit!

IT LOOKS LIKE 2 IPOD BOXES TOGETHER WITH A WEBCAM! ON! =S

  • haha who want this?

to big, and what do you use it for

  • no one wants to cary a stick extending a camrea on their phone

  • I don't see the technology useful for a portable handheld device. Although, when they showed the navigation with a map it made me think about the possibilities for usage with a 3d modeller.

  • This might eventually have a few specialized market, but it will never go mainstream with success, since using it is unatural. (you can see how slow they can type on it...)

  • When you first try to type with a mobile phone it is slow, but people learn quickly..

  • what the hell r u suppose to use this for

  • crap

  • to all the retards out there!!this is a prototype!!! you obously cant't stick it in your back pocket, morons.

  • No.

  • just get a STYLUS!

  • forget about lucid touch!!!!

    Lucid Dreams are freakin awesome!!!!!!!!!!

  • LOOOOOLLL XD

  • This is amazing

  • No one wants to learn a new keyboard layout. People will be more confused with operating this multi touch device than the existing ones. But i guess they could get used to it. USing a camera behind it is horrible. How do you carry this in your pocket ?

  • It uses the regular qwerty layout. It has only just been rotated to be easier to use. Rather than putting it down to type or using a portable keyboard attachment. The user can keep it held in their hands while typing. All the fingers would be used to touch the same keys that would be touched on a regular keyboard. What you seen on the video is a prototype.

  • This is a really interesting step forward. I learned to touch type for my thesis and see this as a useful skill I would teach my kids but wondered how long 'qwerty' would be with us. This gives a great example of how it could be used. Typing text on an 'ordinary' 'phone drives me crazy. Cheers, Lesley

  • POINTLESS DEVICE

  • agreed

  • Great work! Nice implementation of some very promising technology. A new hand-held game platform perhaps? If so I'd have to say talk to Nintendo, they seem the most willing to take a risk with new ideas these days. Not to mention the fact that they have the hand-held market dominated already.

  • It's nice but precision is not the problem anymore. I like the backscreen idea though.

  • Is there any way for me to set it to where I have to hit play to watch a video as opposed to it playing automatically when I select it? Please message if you know..

  • I thought this would be more exceiting, like a fully glass touch screen with both sides being able to have data inputs.

  • Awesome! Being able to type on a phone or whatever from front and back. Away with the two thumb typing-- bring back all 10 digits!

  • I see where this could go in a few years...

  • retarded. no one can carry that around in their pocket or without being called an idiot

  • Its a PROTOTYPE !

  • POINTLESS DEVICE

  • POINTLESS DEVICE

  • expensive?

  • i know its a prototype but it can use come work maybe demonstrate some more practical uses. everything shown seems easier on touch screens today. but id like to see how the ideas change and improve from this in the future

  • torontian nerdlingers

  • this thing is not for sale yet quit your bitchin everybody... its an IDEA.

gosh nobody can be semi optimistic about the future anymore?

  • Exactly. And it's a damn cool idea too.

  • emmooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • cool concept but, it's basically an extremely expensive device whose sole advantage is slightly improved ergonomics.

key boards have worked fine for the last 30 years

why do they need to be on the back of the screen now?

  • Well, I rather a slightly improved ergonomics than a slight carpal-tube syndrome.

  • So it can be held. Not everywhere people goes will have a large flat surface to place their laptop on.

  • das shit

  • Yeah I think it would be annoying to have an image of your hands on the screen all the time...

  • Something that will most likely be an option that can turned off. Altough, how is it any more intrucive than having your fingers blocking the screen using a regular touch screen? At least the image of your fingers would be semi-translucent. Making it easier to see what is being pressed.

  • Good concept, but poor real implementations. Nobody will want a webcam stuck on a metal rod sticking out 4 inches in the back.

  • I don't get the purpose of this device. I thought the point of having a laptop or touch screen is to free your hand from holding so you can do your task. With this device, you'll have to hold it all the time...kinda makes it uncomfortable isn't it?

I don't think this device will be popular. I think "virtual keyboard" will be the next big thing instead...

  • yea, cause i totally don't already have RSI.

  • what they really need is voice recognition for text entry. I'm fine with regular old touchscreens for everything else.

  • Voice recognition has been used for ages , but it's rubbish , it's extremely annoying when you try phoning osmeone and you say"Nine" and it says Two >.>

  • actually Samsung phones in Korea (not the crappy shit they create for the american market), they have exceptional voice to text recognition engines. It has an awesome efficiency aided by grammar correction.

  • But Fingerworks is out of business.

  • Nice! Forget the laptops -- Now we get Fingertip pads!

  • Apple computers has a 2007 patent for similar technology. i like the fact that you dont block the screen as you interact with it... promising

  • The map application they show, doesnt seem like a bad idea. But the KEYBOARD THINGY ! Holy crap. As if people havent got enough trying to write at 1 char/s on a standard QWERTY keyboard. Awkwardness seems too high a price for simply taking your fingers "out of the way".

  • I kinda like the keyboard. The keys are in the same relative position to the fingers as a qwerty keyboard, but split in half and turned sideways to fit the way you hold it.

  • I think this is incredible. I'm well versed with the iphone and I believe that this could take the user interface to a completely new level. I am quite astounded by this concept.

  • This seems very cumbersome and awkward. I cannot see this thing becoming any kind of leading technology, merely a pasing fad if anything at all.

  • How marvelously shortsighted of you. the first of any tech is always going to be less evolved than its 'progeny'. This is a huge proof of concept. Silly.

  • huge being the keyword there. :)

  • I can see this being useful in a different context but not for something like "ultra-portable PCs" where precise typing is needed. I think it would just be too awkward. If it was for something like a mobile media player where you wouldnt need to use a qwerty keyboard, you would just be select play, pause, menus and the like..that would be a different story. Perhaps even some sort of PSP/DS rival handheld.

  • its crappy.....

  • I know a narcissist when I see one that watches the creepy shadows of his/her fingers moving at 0-0.5X speed all day.

  • that just makes me dizzy

  • This is gonna be a revolution in the square moving industry.

  • LOL exacty "great more crap we really dont need"

all i need is the map. i get lost in my own house sometimes.

  • LostAngel88 exclaimed:"Great more crap, we really don't need!"

Right. Give me a cave and a pointy stick and I'm good to go.

  • "Great more crap, we really don't need!"

    Agreed.

  • Go smoke some more pot, you feeble minded dumbass. Do you think technology just comes out of the lab ready to go?

  • It does not change the fact that they are addressing the wrong problem. The limitations of the touch screen boil down to the interface, not the fact that we need more counter-intuitive ways of interacting with the screen. Perhaps you lack the vocabulary to explain what you actually like about this, rather than falling immediately into insults?

  • LOL!!!! The big camera in the back of this thing is funny too; However, technolgy is great, and im sure they will make this thing better in the near future

  • technology development speed sure scary...

  • I can see the gameing industry picking up on the idea

  • What are we going to use this for? iPod phones? :p

  • Zukunft!

  • thats stupid

  • Its the proof of concept. (-_o)%

Haven't you ever seen a lab test model of something compared to a final device?

Please... in the future... think before you post.

  • Are you aware of the term 'satire'?

  • Are you? Because that is in no way satirical in the slightest...

  • If you'd bothered to look at the sketch (at around 00:58) you'd have noticed that in future, it's meant to have a flat imaging device to replace the camera on the back.

Such devices already exist in prototype form. (And there are paten applications for such devices out there.)

It's a proof of concept - you might like to engage your brain before writing "absolutely shit" next time.

  • "Pseudo-transparency..."

    ...isn't that just...translucency?

  • The screen is not translucent, its solid, its digitally drawing a fake hand shadow on the screen to give the illusion of transparency.
