  • man you are intense. and funny

  • mute the sound, and watch again...

  • I haven't heard of this style before. Do you know any more about it?

  • wow that was idiotic....it's not really about u but it's about the band...and u just HAD to make it about u....ur the conductor not main act!!!

  • @alcgda I don't think you understand the point of the IUP drum major auditions. It is supposed to be a show, a kind of performance to show not only his technique (which is different than most high schools use) but his musicality and creativity.

  • @emiliamarie87 musicality? how so with his conducting?

  • I'm going to be honest, I can't take this audition seriously. I couldn't even follow him. If I were to have done that in my drum major audition, I would have never made drum major. And I was drum major for three years in high school. They probably wouldn't have let me audition with that.

  • @frenchhorngal09 I don't think you understand the point of the IUP drum major auditions. It is supposed to be a show, a kind of performance to show not only his technique (which is different than most high schools use) but his musicality and creativity.

My high school drum major audition consisted of conducting the National Anthem and the first song in our show, so I can understand why this would be confusing...

  • very sloppy, try being more sharp.good job at mirroring :)

  • I went to Drum Major Camp in 1997 at IUP, when i was in high school... I Know what Cassavant style is. I miss Doc.. The Legend Lives On!

  • WHAT A BOSSS

  • whats Cassavant style ??

  • this is pretty good and impressive

  • i saw IUP at Allentown last weekend for the Collegiate Marching Band Festival....it was my first time seeing this style of conducting live....yes it was different, but very unique and fun to watch!!

  • Too bad West Chester stomped house

  • Okay, that was awesome.

  • EXCELLENT CASSAVANT STYLE! you really dont see this anymore. also excellent rollsteping, and the back marching was SUPERB!

  • He marches great but his conducting is just average.

  • In my school, being able to conduct is 1/2th of getting the position.

Plenty of people who were amazing at conducting were turned down by the director, and a girl who tried out for Band Captain got Drum Major. Now this year, we only have 2 Drum Majors.

  • other way around.

  • i dont know much about this style of conducting, but i do know, being a drum major, u dont flap ur hands like ur a bird. You keep them flat so that the band can clearly see them. the movement should come from mostly shoulders and some elbow, not wrist. also, the judges should never see your palms unless you are doing a crescendo type movement. but a drum major should exemplify all aspects of band including marching, and as far as i could see, his roll step and back marching on toes was great.

  • bahahha what are you trying to accomplish? marching while conducting? thee podium isnt that big . . .

  • it's a different style of conducting called Classical conducting. at our university the drum majors are sometimes asked to march with the band and conduct in front of sections of the band

  • it's cool to watch

  • believe it or not, sometimes the drum major marches with the band. Like in Street Marching. That's what my school did. But I guess if you've only been involved in Field Band, it would make sense you've never seen a drum major direct when marching.

  • Huh, that's really interesting!

  • but but but drum majors dont move.....and and what the fuck

  • Cassavant? Very intriguing. I've never seen anything like it. I've always been limited to my trusty stand.

  • You idiots. I'm sure this guy got plenty of critiquing from the judges.

  • So this is called Cassavant style conducting?

    What are other styles called?

    Like the more solid pattern.

  • Bryan437 Do you mean A drum major that plays with the band and conducts or a drum major who marches and conducts with the band like in a parade. Cause neither of those are useless. Some bands need drum majors like that. I personally prefer a drum major who just conducts but also has the ability to march and conduct at the same time. If the bands opening set was far from the podium then they would have to start the band on the field and march with them until they got back to the podium.

  • Drum majors started to keep the band from being killed by the opposing army during wars.

  • nebandrock,

For these auditions you don't have to be in uniform. It makes it easier to move around in. If his technique was cleaner it would be easier to read. If you would watch the drum majors that made it would be a lot more readable. As for the dancing I don't why he did it. I do admit his conducting is sloppy but it really is a good style of conducting. As for the type of band that can read read this style would be IUP. We are amazing so I'm pretty sure it works.

  • ehh...not that great.

  • why is he marching and directing?

  • This looked cool but as conducting goes, sub par.

  • This is...interesting.

  • a drum major that marches with the band is like an asshole on an elbow. USELESS

  • A conductor who cant keep time is even more useless. Marching and marking time just shows the pulse in the drum major's entire body.

  • Alright I will admit that I don't know about this style of conducting, but there are a few things I don't understand that bother me for this style. Y does he dance, Y is not in uniform for an audition, and y does none of it look clean? Also what type of band could read this pattern cause I really can't. Could someone tell me the answers to these questions please?

  • you look like a colorguard

  • I like it, but all in all it lacks being clean...And he flicks his wrists to much. I perfer my style of solid pattern with a single ictuse over the multi-ictuse pattern he uses.

  • I agree with the flicking wrist!

  • Well, our last drummajor got murderd at contest for that, so I'm prone to look down upon it. Clean patterns are the key to a Majors field effectiveness.

  • Ohh FUCKIN' A!! The second song is our first movement song. Damn that caught me by surprise.

    M.C Escher

  • Is the style he uses around 4:52 still considered to be the classical Casavant style? I've seen your drum majors do something similar to this on the climax of Amazing Grace, but it looks like he's signaling messages to airplanes with the straight arms. Anyway it's a very interesting style and I'd like to learn how to do it.

  • is he serious?

  • HAHA i totaly love his audition =D

  • rhis is a beautiful display of cassavant! we conducted cassavant in high school ,and i missed it when i moved to college. great audition!!!

  • awesome audition!!!

    IUP marching band=amazingness.

  • Wow. I've never seen anything like this before, but I have to say, it's pretty cool.

  • thats pretty dank

  • Lol, amazing job! My dm tryouts are just conducting our school song in 2 and then in 4. Wish I had the option of doing something like this. You should've made it. Keep up the hard work!!

  • Hahah. That's intense.

  • i would just like to say your band is sooo talented musically :) i am from a neighboring school and i respect you sooo much. if i had to try out like that i wouldnt. tht takes guts. im currently in the process of auditioning. i give this kid one hundred percent! he is awesome! i cant believe he did not make it! thanks for sharing and i look forward for seeing you guys again really soon!!! :)

  • thats so awesome!

  • Lol, Im AUditioning for drum major. This would be a killer audition if i could do it in time.

  • nope, he is a percussionist...

  • i would love to know what this guy plays...

    im guessing trombone?

    or baritone/euphonium

  • He is VERY good.

  • i remember this audition!!! he did very well

  • At :47, what is that move called?

I've never seen that before, and can u tell me the movements? (it was hard to see it fully on the video.)

    Thanks! this is awesome.

  • It's been passed down for many years and the guy that taught me didn't know what it was called. It's a basic sequence of arm movements. The order goes Forward-Out-Up-Forward-Out-Down. The Right arm does it 1 count before the left arm making it a 7 count move. Hope that helps

  • If you have any video of the IUP classical style please put it on I would love to learn it.

  • haha, if he didn't make it, its probly cause they need more good marchers like him.

  • What is Cassavant? I mean, obviously I can see what it is. But why would you use it? It looks cool. I might talk my teacher into using it next year.

  • The Casavant or Classical Style of drum major technique was developed by Albert R. Casavant during the 40s and 50s. His drill and drum major technique was the standard in drum corps at this time, then other styles with a more modern approach became standard. These days, the Casavant style is rarely seen, but is still preserved within a few universities such as Indiana Univ. of PA, where Albert's son, Charles, directed the band from 1976-2000. This style is now an IUP tradition.

  • I didn't expect a response that in depth. Thanks!

  • did he make it?

  • no, he did not, but he is a band officer this year.

  • very good i like this too.....i have a conducting video with a 19 section and 3/4 beat too hard.... i did it for my friend at band camp..hope you like it...

  • The style is very easy to follow I would say so myself. I love it.

  • Hmm nice last selection though PHANTOM 03!!!!

  • ok gwhayden I have a Masters in band conducting. This is just another type of conducting. Get over it. And by the way, maces serve a great purpose. Check out some of these 300+ bands that need 3+ drum majors spread over the field to keep the tempo. The mace can be seen CLEARLY AND EFFECTIVELY. That's all.

  • I have 2 questions.

1.) Why do they make you march around while you conduct?

    and

2.) What the hell was up with the first song? lol

  • march while conducting so you know the tempo and beat. 1 and 3 are on left and 2 and 4 are on right

  • :(. oh well maybe next time.

  • Thanks =)

  • Can someone tell me what the 2nd to last song is??-Thanks

  • Take On Me by the Ahas

  • did he get drum major?

  • no, he did not--though his routine was definitely the crowd favorite.

  • Casavant was the man that was there for 25 years and retired in...2000, right? Was this his style of conducting that he brought to the band?

Anyhow, I'm really excited that I'm going to a school that has an amazing band because I'm a band geek (even if I'm not going to do it in college...)

  • im just wondering what kind of style this is? usually our drum major is on a podium!? if some could explain that'd be nice! either send me a message or just put up a comment?

  • This is the Cassavant style of conducting, and yes our drum majors are usually on a podium, but this is an audition.

  • o..ok...usually for our auditions we just have people that are intristed conduct the previous years show...or at least some of it..thats cool tho!

  • Finally, this was no cheerleading tryout, again, this was an honest to god, Drum Major audition, it was just a different style. Those of you who say you never march and conduct have obviously never conducted a parade (I have, twice), and those of you who don't understand, we can tell, because you knock what you don't understand.

  • This routine may have never been meant for the field. Part of this was that he had to create a routine demonstrating his marching and conducting ability, while being able to show the feel of the music. He did that very well. His technique may have been a little off (we've discussed this before), but he at least tried and gave a valiant effort.

  • See, what some people fail to realize is that this is a totally different style than most bands march. I think that for his style, he did very well. The part where it looks like he's walking, he's really trying to show the flow of the music through marching and conducting.

  • Does anyone know the 2nd to the last song's name is??

  • i think this is absolutly amazing. I'm high school, and im going through the process of auditioning for drum major. as easy as it looks to people, its really not..i think hes amazing. did he make it?

    -Isabel

  • This is... interesting... to say the least...

  • Just so you all know, I posted these out of order so that you can read the whole comment top to bottom.

  • What people don't seem to realize, as they are content on judging without knowing anything at all, is that this isn't something that would be done on the field. The IUP Marching Band (which is famous in its own right, look it up) has drum major who conduct different than how you conducted in high school. There is a lot of showmanship and a lot of dramatics.

  • This routine is designed to showcase how he can express the music while still keeping time. Being drum is not wholly about waving your arms in time, but is also about using your body to convey what the music should sound like and also getting the audience involved. If you are going to post something about this video, do some research first and don't just post useless drivel that causes me to waste my time by reading it.

  • wtf, we would NEVER do that on the field

  • O.o

    ...wow

  • Btw, harry, you're a fag, and the guy in the video dosen't have any idea what hes doing. Try out for cheer leader or something

  • first of all MrM3RC3N4RY did i make any personal insult to you and what you on about he doesnt have any idea what he's doing have you read the other comments. Try out for cheerleader WTF all i said was that your american drum major is not in the same class as a British Military Drum Major. So dont call me a fag you poncey fudge packer, watch some videos of military bands and you'll see what i mean. try looking for Edinburgh Military Tattoo

  • whoa. that is weird. Casavant, eh?

  • BAHAHA!

    You're crazy man :]

    I love you :D

  • Did everyone do that too or just him? Great for a talent show but I wouldn't put that on a field. Creative yes, good for marching no. I don't thik a real band could follow this, don't turn your back on the band and put your arms down.

  • Jeremy! How did I miss that you tried out for DM and better yet how did I not know that you were using Nee's theme song by Ah-Ha as part of your fun song? I thought you did I fine job. Ignore all these posts by ppl who don't know what the conducting style at IUP is like. Perhaps its meant to be less keeping the beat and more for show people? You have to keep the drunken people from turning into a rowdy mob during halftime. Good work le cochon garcon! Congrats on getting an Officer position kid!

  • It seems like it's more for show than actual conducting of a band.

  • I've never seen anything like that before, but I'm pretty darn impressed.

    Awesome!

  • im really at a loss to try and understand this style.

in ca, we dont march around like that. were judged on our frontward appearance. as well, our arms must NEVER cross. EVER. and his hands to me are sloppy... but it happens. he has great showmanship, ill give him that. but i question the style in general. go him, though.

  • lmao! u call that conducting!

like wtf is he doing hopefuly he didnt get it!

  • um... can someone fill me in on what this casavant style of conducting entails?

  • Yes, IUP is one of the few schools doing the style by A.R Casavant, and his son Charles Casavant still has an influence on the dm's there today. If you wouldn't mind a critique, the Casavant style is about refining and controlling patterns, you were a little out of control there.

  • o_O....oookk...if you insist.

  • I grew up around the IUP area, went to the drum major camp for two years and was DM 2 yrs during our state championship season. Where is the intensity in the classical style? Arms arnt level. Wouldnt represent The Beast of the East

  • Nope. I've from around IUP and been to the IUP Drum major camp for two years

  • i know all about "politics". Good audition. Move around to much :P I'd like to see that on a podium.

  • You obviously do not know much about music because the song is supposed to switch meters, that was the point of it--to show off his skill with meter changes. Stick to flaming things that you actually have knowledge of instead of making yourself look like an uneducated idiot.

  • woah, um he changed his comducting from 4/4 to 3/4 throughout the song...i relly hope he was joking becuz that was garbage but pretty funny

  • You obviously do not know much about music because the song is supposed to switch meters, that was the point of it--to show off his skill with meter changes. Stick to flaming things that you actually have knowledge of instead of making yourself look like an uneducated idiot.

  • Wow, just amazing. Our percussion teacher uses this style and it's just awesome. Spectacular showmanship.

And I thought our tryouts were hard. ^_^"

  • Personally its just...too damn wavy. Heh, stiffer hands please for one. But hey, if it worked for your band; all power to you.

  • This is from IUP's drum major auditions... and when it comes to drum majors, IUP is it. The previous director was Charles Casavant, son of H.R. Casavant, the creator of marching band and the "classical conducting" pattern.

  • Do I think he was serious? No. I firmly believe, however, that he can put together one hell of a routine without a mace. His conducting was lacking at times as was his marching form, but he knows how to do it and I'm sure if he was given the opportunity, he'd be one fine drum major! I've been a drum major for two years, section leader for two, and a member of drummajors.com for 4 years (moderator for 2 of those years). I would give the guy a chance...

  • Thanks for the chance haha. BTW, this was the last part of the audition process, a 6 min. routine ; marching and conducting to music using specific criteria that the judges look for. IUP does not use maces. We also use Cassavant style classical conducting (which happens to look like waving in an airplane). There are three Drum majors, 1 executive, 2 assistant, they do not march and conduct unless the drill asks for it. Hope that clears up some questions.

  • lol this is great!!!

  • this is crazy.. just like the other kid i hope he was joking! marching and conducting?????

  • Flagging down a plane? Too bad Phantom Regiment had to be involved. Eww Cadets 06. *shudders* It was entertaining though.

  • i agree, please tell me he isn't serious . . . . . his conducting is horrible! and he's not even MARCHING around, he's WALKING! ok he starts to actually tries to march at the end . . . . but you don't march and conduct at the same time. 2nd year as drum majoring has finished and i'm hoping that i don't get someone like him in my auditions.

  • :) well, i'm on my second year of drum major and i know I was never required to march while conducting :) plus from the way i've learned to conduct(with the beat always hitting in the same spot) he is pretty much shredding it to pieces. he's fairly amusing though.

  • was he supposed to be joking???

  • could the kid not get his own mace?? I have only been a DM for one year and i beat this kid. lol

but maybe he was showing that he can make a routene? lol, any way props to the J-ster.

  • not all drum majors have maces you know.

  • While his performance was somewhat amusing, I don't think politics was the reason for his not getting the position. Also, he did not do Phantom Regiment justice. I've been a drum major almost 10 years and have judged numerous auditions and I personally wouldn't have made him drum major, either.

  • Please tell me he wasn't serious!
