I heard this on 60s serius(SP) today and wrote the title down, Have not heard in a long time,, As soon as it started I said'' A symphony".. remember it when.. I was14 and just getting into music,.
The guy who wrote this nice, little song was Elvis Presley's Vegas and Touring piano player in the '70s! As for Gary, he still performs the number in concert.
Is it just me, or does this song sound as if it might have been written and recorded in the1980's? Take someone about 40 years old, unfamiliar with Gary Lewis's oeuvre, and ask him/her if this sort of record was what they listened to when they were kids. I'll wager they'll ask who recorded it and when.
@bryanstreek OK; the lyrics and vocals are a bit awkward, the editing a little sloppy (hence the nonexistent "skip" and quivering pitch) and whoever heard of a Hawaiian symphony anyway. But, with all that, the arrangement of the strings, the chord progressions and the beat make this record worthwhile, unlike, say, some Taylor Swift song with cheesy lyrics, dull chord progressions & rhythms, grating vocals AND no redeeming features. Even the bad songs were good, sometimes great, in the '60s.
Without a doubt the most underrated rock group of the 1960's. I saw Gary Lewis perform twice. One time at an oldies show at St.Louis' Fox Theater and a second time when he and his group shared billing with The Grass Roots at St.Louis' Union Station. Both times he put on a fantastic show.
Nice stereo effects. I used to play this song to no end. All my older brothers hippy freinds thought I was going to grow up gay for listening to this. It is kind of haunting from the past to hear it again. BTW, I didn't turn out gay lol.
I love this song too. Gary never had any big hits here in the UK but I used to listen to the pirate station Radio London and we heard all the great American records as well as our own hits. I think Gary Lewis and the Playboys had some wonderful records. Thanks so much for sharing them!
hey jimmy...damn we english never bought this band...silly ...loads of u.s hits...and lo and behold..this one goes into the NORTHERN SOUL niche...strange...top pop band
this kind of posting of a song is makes youtube so wonderful !!! thank you sooo very much !!! love the manual turntable , too !!! check out leon russell on the keyboards
The Beatles loved to have Gary Lewis and the Playboys cover their songs. This group had an amazing string of hits in the sixties. Count Me In, Everybody Loves a Clown and Green Grass are a few of my favorites.
@garymichael1950 Please have Gary come to Charlotte, NC and/or State College, PA. I would love to see him. I'm in NC, but from the SC area and would drive there to hear him sing. My neice and I graduated together and I've been up visiting and gone to some oldies concerts with her. We love it! Her husband has a small Christian band now. Originally he, his brother and half brother had a band & started out playing in high school and played at my 16 b-day party. I still treasure that pic.
A fine song and they had the courage of a unique orchestration (for pop anyway) and pretty long introduction ironically when Gary and the Playboys used studio musicians on all their songs. Actually the middle orchestration is too long .. sorry. This might be the weakest of Gary's hits, the lyrics are weak especially at the end of the song but they were up against a lot of great songs written by the likes of Al Kooper (this diamond ring) and other talented writers.
@thewillismon Right. Also when I say this is not a good song by G and the Playboys I am still thinking it's better than anything out in the last 10 years (hyperbole, always). Hey, I just noticed a lot of people on this site talk this up and love it and I can understand that. I also think most people just comment positively. I just try to be honest and have made a lot of enemies on youtube - in real life I am diplomatic, hard to believe..ha. Thanks for not screaming at me .. you're kind.
Completely agree - their absolute best song (and the only single of theirs I ever bought). I don't know why, but there's something about the sound of '60s string arrangements that recordings from subsequent eras haven't been able to capture. Cases in point: "MacArthur Park" & the records of B.J. Thomas (esp "Eyes of a New York Woman") & Glen Campbell,
Gary Lewis & The Playboys greatest hits is always in my cd console in my car.
My daughter who is 19 once asked me how such a sad story could sound so happy. I told her "It's what is really talent." She had played this once in my car with her friends in it and it was like a revelation. Mean dad that I am, her friends wanted to burn some copies, I told her no, it was on sale at Barnes & Noble for $10.99.
Just had to say something about this great song. Heard it tonight on the oldies station in Lansing, MI and it brought back some great and some sad memories. The ending of this song is so appropriate; no symphony because there was no heart left in me. Tonight I have no heart left in me.
@newhotman1001 What can I do to help your heart? If you need someone to talk to - email me. I'm a good listener. There is laughter after the tears. And it will always still hurt when we stop crying, but the smiles of others sodder the cracks in our hearts until it's better. ((((((((many hugs my friend))))))))))
@TXBluebird Thanks for asking but that was many years ago. Fortunately, time heals all wounds. Still, everytime that I hear this song, it does remind me of that time when it hurt. I still love this song though.
What most people don't know is that this the only truly American group that charted their first 8 hits in the Top 40! Simply amazing when you consider all the great groups that came out of the 60Ts! For that reason alone they should be in the R & R HOF! Like so many other great groups - Paul Revere, 3 Dog Night & the Moody Blues to name a few!!! Wake up Cleveland!
One of my very favorite bands! I remember listening to many of their songs on my little black transistor radio, walking around my neighborhood in the 60's. Loved their style (no pun intended). Just good memories all around this group's music.
Did you know that during the British Invasion Gary Lewis & the Playboys were the most consistent American group of that era. The Four Seasons and the Beach Boys Too.
Just had to hear this wonderful song that I think is his best. This group had so many hits in the 60's that most people don't remember. This and being at the height of the British Invasion. I saw them a few years ago and Gary Lewis was playing the guitar instead of the drums. So much for nostalgia.
Jimmy.....no scratches on this 45 RPM. Just great to listen too........thank you for posting. I remember it well 1966/Fall/Going into the 9th grade to an all Boy's school for 4 years.........now that school is coed. (Hill/Muray, Maplewood, Minnesota)
Bought my first rock conert ticket to see Gary Lewis in 1966 at the old Washington Coloseum - spent $3 out of my paper route money. Disappointed when he didn't show.
I was born in the 80s and i grew up listening to oldies like this and still do to this day.. where has real talent gone? Todays music is just about money drugs & hoes..AWFUL!
This song also reminds me of summer. The summer of '66 after I graduated from high school. What memories!!! But sadly those days are gone. Thanks for posting this song!!!
this tune always reminds me of the summer and i guess that's because that's when i first heard it???i was dating a real snuggle bunny that summer...loved her very much...her mom didn't like me....but i managed to continue dating in spite of Mom....then college took me away and the romance ended.....thanks for the post
This is my favorite Gary Lewis and the Playboys song, and one of my all-time favorite songs. It is simply and incredible song and everything works perfectly. What is unusual about this song is there is no chorus, just on line after another and it works perfectly with this song. Thank you for posting.
Oh ok he is his son, huh go figure, for years i allways led to believe he was jerrys brother. b.t.w greetings from canada (sorry couldnt resist allumst)
I'm with newhotman. For me, this was the best of all of their songs. And like you stated, newhotman, they did have alot of hits. Something else most people don't take into account is the fact that Gary Lewis & The Playboys had all of these hits at the height of the British Invasion. They had hits in spite of The Greatest musical act ever, The Beatles. Many acts didn't even make it to the top 40 because of the The Beatles' domination. Cudos to Gary and the guys. They did really good. Proud of 'em
Sometimes I think that people forget how many hits Gary Lewis had. As I have said before, his very best. No symphony 'cause there was no heart left in me. How many people can relate to that phrase?
A classic that is, what I believe, their very best single. For anybody who was in love and lost love in the 60's, this is very appropriate. A wonderful song and lyrics to boot!
This is the best among all his songs. I know he still performs around the country, I think the last performance was in San Diego. Is he still with the original band members?
I Love this song!! I do have the single backed by "I won't make that mistake again". A really sweet story, a pity they don't make simple tunes like this anymore.
I thought "Tina" was on the B-side. "I Won't Make That Mistake Again" backed "She Just My Style" according to the booklet from the CD "Gary Lewis & The Playboys-The Legendary Masters Series."
I love this song. I used to have the 45rpm record. I'd been looking for it, but couldn't find it. Finally, I found a couple of videos. One wasn't the full song. This was the one I was looking for. It's too bad about the tiny skip, at the end, though. Thanks for posting it. It made my day. :)
Glad you like the song. It's one of my favourites from the sixties. I've played this over and over, and there's no skip at the end that I can hear. Maybe it's the way it downloads at your end.
It's at the end of the last word. I remember it sounding a bit longer. It's not really a big deal. I'm still happy to have the song here. I added it to my favorites. Thanks for the reply. Have a great day. :)
I heard this on 60s serius(SP) today and wrote the title down, Have not heard in a long time,, As soon as it started I said'' A symphony".. remember it when.. I was14 and just getting into music,.
