I agree with Kraustrujillo: this is the best version of this aria. It's even better than the studio recordings sung in French. Kraus was very inpired that evening, it seems! How the hell a human being can sing like this? I really don't get it. It's simply a miracle. So effortlessly, as if it were so easy to sing this! Compared to Pavarotti, Kraus is a prince...and Pavarotti a barking dog.
This is incredible. I don't know if I like the slower tempo. Maybe they tried it for dramatic effect, but I do feel it loses its rhythm. The singing, however, is out of this world. The breath control, the consistent color, the effortless movement into the high range. There are other 'special' voices, but no other singer I have heard has the technical consistency of Kraus, married, of course, to a beautiful instrument.
I've never heard this aria sung so loud. Especially the high notes which I have heard almost voix mixte. Also, it is a bit slow so he has to take more breaths. Loses a bit of the rhythm IMHO. Maybe it was the conductor's idea. I like Kraus very much and know he could have sung it the more usual way..
This song is considered one of the most difficult in the tenor rep. It has very long sustained phrases right through the most difficult parts of the tenor range and for Kraus to sing it at almost half of its regular tempo is nearly superhuman. I've never heard it done this slowly, no one can do it this slowly but him and so beautifully, so powerfully. This is a voice that comes once in a century. Study it well...
@EutuveX you are very foolish, and an insult to the great ARTIST that was Kraus. This video is for us to appreciate his artistry, not to insult others with. You are missing the whole point, my friend.

I do not wish to impugn this great singer, but this singing is just plain painful to listen to. Kraus' struggles with the tessitura and he sings way too loudly. The aria sounds better in French. Try Nicolai Gedda's SUPERB version recorded in 1953, when he was just 28 years old.

you see,I agree with you, Gedda had a much better voice without nose resonance, but Alfredo Krauss did not sing well in French, he had troubles with the vocals EEE and the sound of Ü,This is why he could not sing German repertory, Gedda is much more complete tenor.i am sorry but i don't think that his technique was pretty

and you are right, because this aria is written in french, pêcheurrs de perles et c'est toute autre chose, but Krauss was not so good as some are saying, his french was not always correct Also the high notes are supposed to be sang in messa di voce and he screams, sorry...
But it has to be sung in french... perhaps (i don´t know, perhaps not) is easier in italian for the notes and pronunciation because he´s spanish and is easier for him to sing in italian. I´m not saying anything against the great tenor he was, in fact i love him, what i said before was just a thougt. BRAVO KRAUS!
It was typical to sing french and german operas in italian because the theaters and public preferred (sometimes) those versions until the 1960s. Kraus liked very much to sing in French.

If a tenor of the present time can sing 5% as good as Kraus used to sing...he would be the best tenor of the moment.
