@bbutters2 Yeah I don't see why some people can't just enjoy both versions of these types of songs. Sly Stone said "different strokes, for different folks" and that's just how it is with the performers. The Rock guys add their own style and flair to the music because they always had such a passion for originals like this one. Glad Van Halen brought me here. No one can deny that Eddie Van Halen can shred a guitar to pieces
In his later years, John Brim was often asked during interviews how he felt about blues songs being "adopted" by rockers. He felt it was a good thing, and that if by hearing a "new" version the listener stepped back to hear some of the originals, then the blues would stay alive......constantly being "rediscoverd" by new generations of players and listeners.
Ive just listened to two Halen attempts at this and there aint no comparison, Brim has no1 spot, its real Chicago Blues, Little Walter on harp. Hear his other superb numbers from around this time.
Ive listened to two of the Halen so called Ice cream man things, and their aint no comparison, John Brim has no 1 position, as any one who knows blues will agree with.
Sawaya each to his own, but hte Brim is real Chicago Blues, Little Walter on harp, nothin beats this, or Brims other tracks around this time.
that's what makes an a real artist.someone (Van Halen in this case) who puts their own spin on it and makes the song complety their own (sinead o connner's remake of prince's "nothin' compares to you" is another). i would say that here the Van Halen version is better is cos i was raised on hard head music (LOL) but without question nothing really can compete with classic amercian music like the blues. blues (classicial, country and gospel as well) is the blueprint!!!
It is great to hear the originals and then the improvised versions later on in the future... Where will it go?

These blues guys were so effortless with the rhythm, rock musicians try too hard to get the same message across.

Very good song. The Van Halen version is bad, as all other blues and rock versions they have made.
