Impossible to buy so cheap in Thailand. It is for U.S. only as Americans stopped to produce anything but have yet great tools and machinery from older times. Asia is importing machinery and industry is growing. Tools are in big demand.
$150 is practically stealing them. When I was 16, I bought Dave Gingery's build your own metal furnace and lathe books. I took them into school. The technician, feeling sorry for me, basically GAVE me a CNC lathe for £50 (about $100 then), in next to new condition, just old, because the students were no longer allowed on it. It was a Denford Orac; there are videos of them up on here. Once I have some kids of my own, I have some ideas for how they might be put to use.
Your right about the good price...that doesn't come along my way very often! I also have the Gingerly book you mention, along with several others. I've often wondered how many lathes were actually built vs the number of books sold.
@lexichronicle2 I have those same books and they are fabulous. Didn't build any of the machines in them but VERY good reading. Was going to build the furnace but ended up finding a Thermolyne Furnace at a school auction and no one bid on it so it I got it for $100 cause that was my stupid opening bid. Wonderful finds out there if you keep looking.
I just bought a Harbor Freight 7X10 at the local flea market last week. Still in cosmoline and with a sign saying "as is $85". Said it wouldn't run. I found five electrical problems including a speed potentiometer with no wiper. Five bucks and I have it running!! Always wanted something like this to play with.
Here almost nobody sells machines like this and if they do its probably homemade or big machines for the industry... and new small ones like these would cost me $2200 for lathe and double that for the mill - the cheapest, smallest one! So if you want to get ripped off... come to europe :(
look for a dividing head and some gear cutters for that mill. a great project would be to make all the change gears you need for your lathe. that way you have them when you need them change feed rate and set up to do threads.

By the time I find a deal like that I will be too old to make use of it. I keep my eyes and ears open but don't ever seem to come up with a real good deal on anything. I won't give up though because I keep hearing of someone like you stumbling across good deals. I work with wood a little but I would have bought that and branched out into metal more. I am a packrat and some day someone is going to get all my stuff. Makes me sick to think of that.
Thanks for your comments. Good deals like that lathe don’t come very often! I think it was a case of me being at the right place/right time. Keep looking, you never know what may come up…
Thanks for posting this footage as I now see the difference in size of the large mills and lathes versus the miniature sized versions. I am looking for a mill to make custom metal parts for my own hobby and I might change my hunt from standard sized mills (floor standing configuration) into a miniature sized one.
On another note i am interested in hobby machining and possibly going back to school at my local community colledge. The thing is theirs a million and one different things i want to fab but dont want to risk getting to many folks involved with multi million dollar projects being patent sniped from my fingers. what do you suggest?
I paid about $450 for that same lathe setup (minus the 4 jaw chuck) from Cummins about 4 years ago. The rest was the Cummins standard setup. I'm kicking myself that I didn't get the Mill because the guy was going to give me a package deal if I got both.
Excellent find John. I'm not suprised you have yet to use the machinary, you must still be dancing around with sheer glee at your purchases. Well done and they have found a good home. Regards from Steve in a snowy UK.
I got a harbor freight 7 x 10 with all the accessories for 100. The guy sold it because the fuse was blown. 50 cent fix. Then I bought a sears 7 x 16 lathe for 70. I bought my mill for 300. It was Rong Fu 31 mill. Weighs about 700 lbs. Came with enco vise, stand, tooling, and basically everything. I guess there are some pretty retarded people where I live.
Cummins used to go out and park and have like two-three day sales. I bought that same lathe as a package deal, it came with all that you have ( except the 4 jaw chuck ), and I paid 400 new for it. As for the mill, I too watch craigslist, and found a mill ( the 44991 ) used for 350 ( no vise, just the stock tools that come with it ). Thing about it is, you end up spending as much or more in tooling for them.. Oh, and I did find an old Kay banjo for 25 on craigslist, just had to buy it !
I'd have only accepted if he also loaded them into my vehicle and paid for my gas to get back home...no seriously, that is probably a world record deal: craigslist for western washington has people asking for more than I can get them on sale at harborfreight...amazing ignorance. I've seen a few gooduns, such as a newer jet 9x20 lathe and 1980's or 1990's jet 12x36 lathe for $1800 together..
Oh My!! after I heard the price of the drill was also $75 I couldn't bare to listen any longer (jealousy was raisin it's ugly horns...lol). Some people are just lucky that way I guess. Good job johnrob!!
You gotta love Craigslist! Great for buying and selling AND FREE!! How long will this last? I hope forever.... You could almost buy the 4 jaw chuck for $75... Wow man, Amazing!!
I am getting my things together for my wood shop from craigslist. Duracraft 12x37 wood lathe $80.00, Craftsman 10" band saw $45.oo, and a Delta Table Saw $35.00. All in good condition.
I found the lathe by watching Craigs list. There is no warehouse, I am aware of, in Mississippi that has home shop lathes for sale. However, you can buy a similar lathe at Harbor Freight.
I just bought the 7x10" mini lathe(harbor freight)at $360 out the door and already have over $100 in accesories. You got a steal of a deal! I've been in your shoes before with the deals,I try not to act excited until I leave with the goods so the people don't change their mind.
My wife got an old Sheldon lathe from WWII, in good condition, along with a Delta drill press, a bandsaw, radial arm saw and some other equipment, for $10 plus the $100 truck rental to move it all.
The only problem is that most of it has DC motors, but all are in working condition.
Well done. I am delighted that you had such good fortune because you have given a lot here and I'm sure there are more than me that benefited from your videos.
It's great to see good things happen to a good guy.
