Absolute truth - is false, because truth is a concept of the mind, it is based on what we know, what best reflects reality. As we learn more our reality changes. We know of gravity, but we don't understand it, we may in the future understand more, but as our world around us changes so will the application of gravity as well, forever evolving. Truth is a concept, not some perfect answer or divine knowledge - that a huge assumption.
I think you Philosophy majors (and definitely everyone interviewed in the vid) are thinking way too high-level. You want to see absolute truth? Check out what they're doing over in the electronics lab. The basis for absolute truth is existence, or lack thereof. The rest is simply derivative. "Does God exist?" Perhaps a more interesting question is, "Is the question of God's existence truly relevant?"
@esiosan, I understand you may have malevolent feelings towards a specific race, but why single out that as the answer you wish to deride?
In regards to the subject matter I think Descartes 'Mediations' yield the best insight on truth and the nature of reality (I will admit I am a neophyte in the study of philosophy though, so any direction is appreciated). My personal view is moral nihilism because universal/absolute truth hinges on the need for a diety to create them, without 1 they fail...
@1971SuperLead PEOPLE WHO HAVE BELIEFS ARE ALL WAYS IN CONFLICT . THE TRUTH IS EQUAL IT IS THE PLAYING FIELD OF REALITY. THE MORE YOU BELIEVE THE FURTHER FROM REALITY YOU ARE . @greenearthnazi20204u Of course I care about TRUTH, but can you BELIEVE truth, or can Truth only be KNOWN? Beliefs are what humans figure out to be "truth". REAL Truth is what you don't learn, but is given to you by HIM.
Magic powers illusions. Your illusions will not fool me. They will only fool you. Stop with the magic and go with MIRACLES.
each of these words have multiple meanings. so, absolute truth can exist in certain contexts, but can it exist absolutely at all times, in all contexts? no, it cannot
according to dictionary.reference dotcom, as an adjective, absolute means: free from imperfection; complete; perfect. in physics, it means: independent of arbitrary standards or of particular properties of substances or systems. the definition of truth is: actuality or actual existence. the definition of spirituality: of or pertaining to the spirit as the seat of the moral or religious nature.
1+1=2... I can prove it. Why do I get the feeling that the people in this video are uneducated?
Google "Software for your brain" ... a free online book, with some fantastic insight into open mindedness vs absolute truth that I think everyone should know.
@mrsjp13 "Not EVERYTHING changes. if your opinions change that often, then you don't really know what you think."
WRONG. everything does change. an opinion changing does not mean one does not know what they think. in fact it's they know exactly what they think with the information they currently have.
There is an absolute truth and it's life, take life away, and what need would there be for truth. This is why Jesus tells us He is the Life, the Truth, and the Way.
If there is no absolute truth then rationality would be redundant; logic could not funcion, and science could never have been developed in the first place.
It is logically absurd to think that absolute truth does not exist; equally that reality or time is an illusion.
When are people gonna realise they have been brainwashed by society into believing on faith that everything of value is an illusion? People accuse religious of being weak-minded, I see secular humanists as being weak-minded.
Laws of Physics say otherwise. Laws of biology says otherwise. Engineering says otherwise, the fact that there is order in the universe says otherwise. The fact that your head does not instantaneously transform into the melon I imagine it to be says otherwise. The fact that we have facts say otherwise. You claiming that absolute truth does not exist simply shows your lack of knowledge on what truth is.
An absolute truth of philosophy is that "a thing is what it is, and is not something else."
Word play does not equate logic. I notice you skipped all the rest of my statement, which shows how "easy it is" to answer me in a straight and honest answer.
You find truth worthless, but you cannot live your life consistently by that philosophy. This means you are a liar and a hypocrite.
You are like the idiot who stands before the judge, who is passing down sentence and says, "I deny you exist, so you cannot pass sentence over me."
so get my point then. when you say 'An absolute truth in philosophy is that "a thing is what it is, and is not something else"" it is empty word play. you can't even properly define truth. what makes you think you can determine if it has an absolute?
laugh all you want. it doesn't change anything.
"You find truth worthlesss" i never said that. your need for dishonesty and manipulation is deep.
That is quite a childish mistake, not to be able to differentiate what an object is, and what its uses may be. This is not surprising coming from somone arguing your point however.
I have defined an absolute truth already. You strawmaned a response.
Perceptions are not reality, this is a six year olds understanding of the world. I feel sad for your parents, lol.
What does the phrase 'absolute truth' mean? Sometimes people in this video seem to be talking about morality (morals cannot be 'true' or 'false'; they can be 'good' or 'bad', or have specific consequences, but they can't be true).
Others seem to be talking about things we know about the universe. What do we have other than sensory inputs? We can't know for sure if they reflect 'absolute reality', but at least we can base some assumptions on them.
logic is based on axioms. Everything is based upon some type of assumption. Therefore, how can we claim some absolute, universal truth? How can we know with 100% certainty that anything is correct? This does not mean we cannot have opinions, this does not mean we cannot have good reasons to believe what we do, but I am not so arrogant to claim that an absolute truth is even possible to know.
Cash: No, you can't prove there is no God, just like you can't prove that there IS one for the same exact reasons. It comes down to belief - but it doesn't STOP there - a belief requires a reason for believing, which is where the argument lies - who has better reasons. Shortcut answer: atheism has better reasons =P
i never said anything about a god existing or not existing.
one would not have to know everything to know weather there is or isn't a god.
no, i don't believe everything made itself. maybe yo should stop inferring so many things... you might come away with something more than your ego reaffirmed.
matterfractalsenergy, i'd just like to add to your comment that to the individual who is absolutely sure of something, that something is an absolute truth
Nice interviewing. While the implication (and in a few cases, the explication) of God was there, neither party either positively or negatively forced their particular belief. It was just a fact gathering exhibition.
Logic proves why there are no absolute truths. Absolute truth is what is true "for all possible circumstances" and there is no possibility of that.
Sorry.

Example: "A bananna is a bananna and is not a dove."
I can properly define absolute truths, and I just have, with the example given. Reality is truth and visa versa.

things are not what they are when they aren't.
