  • God you gotta love them 80's international school buses with a low air warning that uses the actual buzzer

  • dnt the bus use pencils for cylinders? lol

  • when the warning lights are on i hear a very strange noise coming from the dash. What is that?

  • @AcaAllertor127 This is probably the air brake warning buzzer since there is no pressure in the air system.

  • hey Chad, have you done anything more to this bus lately? i'm eager for an update^^

  • its eather a 304 or a 345.. not a 404

  • you sound like tht guy off tht show ruby

  • @2ndOfficerCHL International stopped making gas engines in 1986 I think, The key is EXACTLY like an older GM key!!! I had an '86 Jeep Cherokee with an ignition key like that!!

  • I didn't know International used gas engines in large vehicles like this as late as 1980. I would've thought it'd be a 466 i6 or a 444 v8.

Btw, that International key looks like a knock-off of a older GM key. Small, square-headed, and only toothed on one side.

  • Never heard an engine crank with no compression before. Kind of a neat sound.

  • chad the rafting company i work for we have a 79 404 carpenter for storage it has 404 in it if u need a rare part let me kno mayb we can help we tk rear out of it so wnt run on road again but motor etc is complete

  • when are you going to put a new bus video on

  • dude you you sound like squidward

  • @anthonynami2 or Fred Rogers

  • lol i wanna here it run i like those old buses

  • u get it running yet

  • We're concentrating on getting the fields mowed with the tractor this weekend but hope to get back to the bus soon!

  • Nice bus, hopefully you'll be able to get it moving soon and also the windshield is the only other thing missing, and then you'll be able to take it down the road. I'm glad you still have historical school buses that are still running from pre-1987

  • Thank you! The bus does not have any glass at all in it except the door plus it looks like it needs all new tires so it may not be on the road any time soon but we will definitely get it running and drive it in the field.

  • Just stoppin in 2 see how it's going. Can't wait till u get the new plugs in and get that bad boy running.

  • Chad, after a massive search, i found information on the Scouts West forum that says the engine block casting number is located on a "boss" on the right front of the engine, probably somewhere below the alternator.

If you can find that number it'll definatively tell which engine it is.

  • Thanks a lot for the information! I will have to look for it.

  • Have you put in the new spark plugs yet?

  • No, I haven't yet, Maybe I'll be able to this weekend.

  • finally i have waited for this vid

  • Retrochad,

Most of the International S-1700s came with the IH 345, your lucky to find one with the 404 in it. I wish you'd find a Blue Bird! LOL

  • I will have to pull up the 1978 Loadstar 1700 with 345 right next to it and check and see what the differences are! Something tells me the 1980 model is a 404, it looks slightly different somehow than the 345's do but I don't know exactly how.

  • It could be a 392 as well. There were a few S series in my distract had that them.

  • I guess that would depend on where you lived also. All our S1700 from 1979 to 1982 had the 404 in them. Our older models had the 345s.

  • Also I had forgot about this, but this 1980 model has a 4-barrel carb. As far as I know, no 345's from the factory had a 4-barrel carb or intake manifold.

  • Doesn't sound as if anything nasty's there.Hope you get it going soon!

  • I hope you get this running soon, because I can't wait to hear it run!

    This is a neat video.

  • best of luck on this one. hope to hear it fire up

  • Neat, looks good so far. No big clanking noises, that is encouraging.

  • Yes it is! it sounds pretty smooth. I was worried about problems with the spark plugs having been out for so long.

  • Sounds promising. I wonder how old the Gas (If it is Gas, not water) is in the tank?

  • The last date of registration on the bus was 2005 so it's likely at least 4 years old. I always start old vehicles up off of fresh fuel from a small gas can when they have been sitting for a long time to avoid getting varnish and other junk into the carburetor.

  • Yeah. Makes sense as old gas doesn't burn right anyway apparently. Are you going to do a compression test on it or proceed to fire it up?

  • Well so far the engine looks promising. The next video will tell the tale. I lived in central Kansas for a while as a kid, and the wind never stopped blowing there, and always in the same direction. Even the trees in the back yard leaned due to the constant wind. It was rough going to school on a bicycle facing the wind, but not bad coming home. You might try taping a small piece of foam over the camera mic to reduce wind noise.

  • The landscape here is very similar to Kansas but just slightly south of here it begins to get more mountainous. I'll see if maybe I can use some foam on it. An external mic would be good but not sure that the camera has a jack for it.

  • I think the only brand of camcorder that has an external mic input is a Canon, and I have been thinking about getting one just for that reason. From the middle of Ks east it is rolling plains and trees, about the middle west to Denver it is totally flat. Far eastern Ks towards the Mo. line has a lot of hills and trees, and no constant wind. I'm going back to the recycling center next week to see if they have anything of interest. I will be watching for the engine test.

  • Those weeds are about to take over, lol. Pretty sure that's a GM-style key.

I've noticed that about the beginning of the vid sound being chopped off and I bet it's related to the editing process. You may want to let the camera run a few seconds longer at the beginning and end of each presentation filmed so you have more "room" to break them up.

  • I really need to get the weeds under control! Some of them are now taller than the buses.

I never edit the videos but just dub them right off the camera but I really do need to let the camera run more before I start talking. When I record the videos into the computer off the camera, I just pause the tape in the camera as soon as I see the video start to cue it up but it always takes a few seconds for the sound to come in.

  • Oh.. and the battery cables are like that cuz it's supposed to have a commercial truck battery in it. But the adapters you have will work just fine. obviously, cuz you were able to turn the motor over. ^.^

    Good luck with the bus!

  • Thanks! I saw the old battery inside the bus but the case was bulging out so I don't know if it will even hold a charge. Never saw battery terminals like that except on marine batteries.

  • I forgot that there was no windshield. I was like, "how can you get such a good view of the engine from the driver's seat?"

Then, At first when you turned the engine over I was worried that it didn't sound right. But there's no compression cuz you took the spark plugs out. That's why it sounds funny.

Motor sounds good. Also, looks like the electrical system is in good shape, that's always a plus! Now if ya can figure out what the firing order is...

  • I noticed it sounded different too...like the starter had a very easy time with it. I guess it was able to turn it easier as there was no compression like you say.

  • We'll keep our collective fingers crossed. Good luck!

  • Looks cool. I love old stuff!

  • Thanks a lot!

  • Chad, try to wait a few seconds before you talk, I don't know what it is, but every video i watch of yours it lags for a few seconds before yoru voice kicks in. Just some helpful tips, not trying to piss anyone off.

  • I know what you're saying! I'll try and allow the camera to run some more before I start talking.

  • whats the size?

  • Do you mean the engine displacement...I think that it's a 404 CID.

  • thats a nice bus, hope to hear it running soon

  • Thank you!

  • Was it seized before?

  • I wasn't sure...the previous owners had removed all of the spark plugs and it had sat out for an unknown amount of time with the cylinders open. They said they were checking compression but not sure why they didn't put the plugs back in. I wanted to make sure the rings hadn't rusted to the cylinder walls by putting the Marvel in there.

  • Thanks Chad, glad she cranks! lookin forward to seeing her run!

  • Thank you...I'm hopeful that it will!
