@atrayue you sound like you have a grudge against him? i'm not a big fan of his work but you have to exept that it is different. All photographers should strive for orignality and thats what his photos have.whether you like them or not is a different story.
@atrayue U think his photos are washed out and uninteresting? Some are but he has some amazing photographs. His photos of Yakuza guys are amazing, eg, the pic of the guy lighting the cigarette of another is incredible. These images are lyrical and full of energy which is what constitutes all brilliant photographs. His Coney Island photos are fantastic too.I can definitely see why he is a Magnum photographer. Nothing sad about that at all.Do u take pictures? Are they any good?
It's impossible to shoot this way in a coutry i live in ;) One can get his ass kicked violently for such a flash shooting in someone's face ;) Outstanding footage anyway. Or maybe it's just like Capa said: "if you're pictures are not good enough, you were not close enough" ;)
I dont like these kind of people, they think they are gods, id piss on his photo collection and his camera, if you cant respect the people around you, then you dont deserve to be called an artist.
While I think it's a clever idea, there are many people who would take extreme offence to being photographed like this. Take some cultures that think photographs steal part of their soul... Me personally I wouldn't mind, but I wonder if he would delete the photo if asked?
yeah any photographer has to get written release from the subject to use their photos so if someone opposed it and didn't sign the photographer can't use that photograph
That only applies in privet space, not public. As long as you are in a public place, you are in a publics eye. And your photograph can be taken. That's why paparazzis CAN sell celebrities photos (notice that you will never see a photos of a celebrity IN the club ... always coming OUT of the club) So yeah ... you can shoot in public any one you'd like! And those people can't do shit! They can try and sue you but it'll be a waist of their time.
@n00borama He can't delete his photos cause he uses B&W film with a Leica MP, not digital. No way would he not take the photo if asked not to.He'd go ahead and take it regardless.
Uhm, you really owned yourself, now! Twice! Congratz, my firend.
You talk about "everbody has his/her own opinion" but you write he is an ass****, but no, he is an artist. And if you dont like his work, just leave it alone!
Actually no, I never said "everbody has his/her own opinion". That's true though, and my opinion is that he is an asshole. It doesn't mean that he's not an artist, and it doesn't mean that his images aren't interesting. I just don't think they're terribly creative.
You want to keep arguing about a dead subject, go for it.
Each photo shows how different people react differently to being accosted unasked on the street with a flash shoved in their face, which is interesting on it's own.
But anyone can do what he does, they just have to be an asshole like he is. Shove a flash in my face like that without asking and you'll be buying a new camera.
It's amazing how people cry out for free speech, until someone says something they don't like.
I stand by what I said, in my opinion Bruce Gilden is an asshole, and he'll probably be the first to agree with me.
And Kobe, I do get it. I'm a photographer, and a make a good living at what I do. But I don't think what he's doing is right. Like I said, the pictures are interesting, but there's nothing creative about shoving a flash in someone's face and capturing their suprise.
He's a good photographer, but he's a bit of a bastard really haha! I think he might do better if he was a little nicer to the people he photographs and a little more considerate.
haha i do this with my friends :P

Bruce Gilden is a pompous ass! And...his photos are washed out grey specks with non interesting posing.
