Its amazing how much Tony sounds like Gordon Lighthouse on this tune.Jerry's dobro is great.First time I heard Gordon Lightfoot was in concert in St. John's,Nfld when I was studying...........great music in its way and thanks for posting.
For some reason, no one, but no one has done a good cover of this song. That includes Mr. Lightfoot, of course, who cannot sing at all these days. But in his day, he was absolutely, totally unbeatable for this kind of rural, story-telling country-folk music. I've heard lots of good musicianship (including this one) on Lightfoot covers, but sadly, putting the track together with the vocal doesn't seem to happen. Just shows you how great and how unique Gordon Lightfoot was.
I first ran into Gordon Lightfoot in St.John's ,Newfoundland and his great vocals and songs have influenced Tony Rice as in this piece.Wonderful sound by the Tony Rice Unit here. Thanks for posting.
Bluegrass does not equal "white trash." I hate that people think that. I don't like country music, or white trash music, but for people from Canada to sit there and make those correlations is racist and impolite at the very least. Seriously, think about it. There's a reason we don't have the Queen of England on our money. Many of us are Irish. Our founders fought to get away from that. Go bow to the queen if you like, but leave Tony out it.
@ShwaZmoto I'm Canadian, and I definitely don't agree with the characterization of this as a "white trash" version of the song. I'm constantly impressed by Tony's interpretations of Gord's music; even if the sound isn't what Gord might have intended originally, Tony's versions stand on their own. :)
@ShwaZmoto I'm Canadian, and I definitely don't agree with the characterization of this as a "white trash" version of the song. @ShwaZmoto Great version of the song. When you play with the dedication and soul this group has put into their careers/music (playing like these guys do doesn't come without hard work, love for music and dedication).
Thanks for posting. TR Sings Gordon was my first Tony album. Listened to it while fixing my car eight hours straight. Found the tape in a box. Apparently, it was borrowed from a friend of my dad's. Love Tony, and I guess Gordon's OK. It's amazing what Tony did with it. Amazing. I wish I could wear a suit and do that. Too cool.
I typically don't take sides but as a Canadian from Orillia, Ontario (home of Lightfoot), I need to side with tritonrocks. The up-tempo version by Tony Rice loses the beauty of remorse which only Gordon can share, due to his alcoholism and other demons. You need to know the man, the song, and its meaning to appreciate its beauty. This by no means is disrespect meant to Tony Rice, who is an accomplished artist, but Shadows by Lightfoot is powerful and not duplicative.
@DrDove4444 I disagree. Just because it's different doean't mean it's wrong.
It's not "duplicative" ... it's interpretive and it is good.
I love listening to Tony as much as I love listening to Gord. I am a Canadian, and I must say that Tony brings some good energy into some previously somber songs that Gordon wrote.
I don't necessarily prefer one over the other. I think they are both good and I enjoy listening to them equally.
@Bilco1949 I never said I was a "killer musician" (although I do play piano pretty well). I simply don't like Tony Rice's version of Shadows. Gordon Lightfoot's is so much better. This is the white trash version. And yes, I have an excellent wife. Very attractive and very loving, 27 yrs and going strong. I got lucky - most guys aren't. And I'm a jackwagon? Where did you get that line, from a Geico ad or something?
@tritonrocks So sorry. I meant to type "jackass". It seems that you really enjoy having negative criticism dished on you. Maybe as much as you enjoy dishing ill conceived tripe upon a musician that you obviously cannot understand. Keep talking.
@Bilco1949 I ignore the negative criticism, especially the name calling, which is the hallmark of narcissists and emotionally immature people. Anyway, my comments on this version of the song stands. START ipcap; IF rpy=TRUE;; cap uid;; cap ip;; cap act;; ELSE stop; END
@tritonrocks The point isn't that you don't like this version, the point is you have been a total jerk about it. "White trash?" "Hillbilly?" Its pretty easy to run your mouth when you aren't having your life's work torn apart by a self-centered rasict.

@andymica I don't claim to know how to play a guitar. I do play keyboard (quite well) and a few other instruments, but not guitar. I just don't like his style, and his version of Shadows, well, sucks.
@tritonrocks Well then.... show us your version of Shadows on piano so we can critique you. It's okay to not like someone's version of a song but is it necessary to piss on it.
@dizzey05 Wow, you idiots are still at it about my comment on Tony Rice. I don't like his version of Shadows. Gordon Lightfoot's is much better. This version sounds too "hillbilly". Sorry. That's how it is, folks.

Native American is one of my top 10 favorite albums of all time - I learned SO many tasteful guitar licks of this albumn...aplied them to all kinds of music.

What a stuck-up snob you must be... then again, jealousy tends to bring out the worst in people. I can totally understand though, a lot of people envy Tony's guitar skills (and you apparently, are one of those people).
Bigdaddydon is sending me nasty, nasty notes, just because of comments I made about Tony Rice. Tony's version is bad; Lightfoot's is much, much better.
Bigdaddy, you should change your name to TheBigBABYdon. That would be more appropriate. Now vote my comment down to a -6 so you don't have to look at it. Baby.
Well that may be true to some extent about the decals on the headstock, I do not know that.. but Ricky Wasson, JD Crowe's guitar player has a 1935 D-28 herringbone with a logo on the headstock. Remember though, that Tony's guitar was heavily modified even before Clarance White had the guitar... so it could be possible that the headstock logo wore off or another overlay was placed on it when the Gretch fingerboard was placed on it when Clarance bought the guitar...
"Native American" was the first Tony Rice cassette I owned (yeah, I said cassette - I now have it on CD). And the opening song, "Shadows" just spoke to me and I've loved it since. Great video! I'd love to find him doing Joni Mitchell's "Urge for Going."
Nice work as always - too bad he didn't credit Lightfoot at the opening for writing such a good song. By the way urface - your act is getting old; trolling around leaving stupid comments on random videos. Get a life.
In many ways, Tony is a tribute to Gordon, and he would be the first to admit it. I can't tell you how many times I have heard him in person say, "This is another song from Gordon Lightfoot."

It is actually a 1935 D-28 but either way prolly the best tone to ever come out of a dreadnought was Tony Rice behind that guitar!

oups,i thought that Martin decals on headstock appearing in 1935, and his don't have some, thanks about the answer, P

I would love to see Tony and Gordon perform together. Both briliant muscians.

This is wonderful. I remember this on TNN, around 1988, I taped it too. I saw Tony that year at the Stewart Theatre - NCSU.
