  • thanks bluegrasslibrary great video

  • I love lightfoot but lets face it,he's getting on inyears, lets be glad we have talents like Tony and a few others to carry on his legacy

  • Honestly one of my favorite songs, I live in Hamilton...Ontario...Canada, and I ...PLAY...BLUEGRASS!

  • This has to be one of my favorite songs.

  • Beautiful! Tony and Jerry sound so good together. I really miss Tony's voice. Native American is a great record!

  • Its amazing how much Tony sounds like Gordon Lighthouse on this tune.Jerry's dobro is great.First time I heard Gordon Lightfoot was in concert in St. John's,Nfld when I was studying...........great music in its way and thanks for posting.

  • this really reminds of the style allsion krauss likes tot play

  • For some reason, no one, but no one has done a good cover of this song. That includes Mr. Lightfoot, of course, who cannot sing at all these days. But in his day, he was absolutely, totally unbeatable for this kind of rural, story-telling country-folk music. I've heard lots of good musicianship (including this one) on Lightfoot covers, but sadly, putting the track together with the vocal doesn't seem to happen. Just shows you how great and how unique Gordon Lightfoot was.

  • The album Shadows is probably the best Gordon LIghtfoot album.

  • Really just skimming the surface of this song. Glib.

  • I first ran into Gordon Lightfoot in St.John's ,Newfoundland and his great vocals and songs have influenced Tony Rice as in this piece.Wonderful sound by the Tony Rice Unit here. Thanks for posting.

  • who's the other guy pickin the geetar next to tony ??

  • @HillbillyProduction1 his brother

  • @HillbillyProduction1 That's his brother, Wyatt.

  • @HillbillyProduction1 that's his brother, Wyatt

  • this is a lightfoot song?

  • you can see here the direct conection between lightfoot and Alison Krausss

i like the lightfoot version and it is a good song but one gets tired of it to hear it too much

  • i am shocked that anyone would hate tony rice as a musician

i don't know him as a person tho

  • Canadians gave up their guns like pussies to the govt. who gives a crap what they think about the greatest flatpicker of all time?

  • Gotta Love the Mullet on Jerry!!

  • Tony Rice Unit comes to The Watseka theatre watseka Illinois on May 7, 2011.

  • Nice song,

    Greetings from Saudi Arabia

  • Bluegrass does not equal "white trash." I hate that people think that. I don't like country music, or white trash music, but for people from Canada to sit there and make those correlations is racist and impolite at the very least. Seriously, think about it. There's a reason we don't have the Queen of England on our money. Many of us are Irish. Our founders fought to get away from that. Go bow to the queen if you like, but leave Tony out it.

  • @ShwaZmoto I'm Canadian, and I definitely don't agree with the characterization of this as a "white trash" version of the song. I'm constantly impressed by Tony's interpretations of Gord's music; even if the sound isn't what Gord might have intended originally, Tony's versions stand on their own. :)

  • @ShwaZmoto

I'm Canadian and I love bluegrass and tony rice!

  • @ShwaZmoto Great version of the song. When you play with the dedication and soul this group has put into their careers/music (playing like these guys do doesn't come without hard work, love for music and dedication).

    you gotta love it.

    another irish cdn.

  • @ShwaZmoto So what's white trash music?

  • @alanyoung2 Kid Rock is white trash music. Tony rice is a guitar god.

  • @0erethren0 Well i will have to agree with ya then. lol

  • Thanks for posting. TR Sings Gordon was my first Tony album. Listened to it while fixing my car eight hours straight. Found the tape in a box. Apparently, it was borrowed from a friend of my dad's. Love Tony, and I guess Gordon's OK. It's amazing what Tony did with it. Amazing. I wish I could wear a suit and do that. Too cool.

  • I typically don't take sides but as a Canadian from Orillia, Ontario (home of Lightfoot), I need to side with tritonrocks. The up-tempo version by Tony Rice loses the beauty of remorse which only Gordon can share, due to his alcoholism and other demons. You need to know the man, the song, and its meaning to appreciate its beauty. This by no means is disrespect meant to Tony Rice, who is an accomplished artist, but Shadows by Lightfoot is powerful and not duplicative.

  • @DrDove4444 Thank you!

  • @DrDove4444 I disagree. Just because it's different doean't mean it's wrong.

It's not "duplicative" ... it's interpretive and it is good.

I love listening to Tony as much as I love listening to Gord. I am a Canadian, and I must say that Tony brings some good energy into some previously somber songs that Gordon wrote.

I don't necessarily prefer one over the other. I think they are both good and I enjoy listening to them equally.

  • @tritonrocks It is so good to know that you are killer musician with an excellent wife. But, when did this come yo be about You, Jackwagon?

  • @Bilco1949 I never said I was a "killer musician" (although I do play piano pretty well). I simply don't like Tony Rice's version of Shadows. Gordon Lightfoot's is so much better. This is the white trash version. And yes, I have an excellent wife. Very attractive and very loving, 27 yrs and going strong. I got lucky - most guys aren't. And I'm a jackwagon? Where did you get that line, from a Geico ad or something?

  • @tritonrocks So sorry. I meant to type "jackass". It seems that you really enjoy having negative criticism dished on you. Maybe as much as you enjoy dishing ill conceived tripe upon a musician that you obviously cannot understand. Keep talking.

  • @Bilco1949 I ignore the negative criticism, especially the name calling, which is the hallmark of narcissists and emotionally immature people. Anyway, my comments on this version of the song stands. START ipcap; IF rpy=TRUE;; cap uid;; cap ip;; cap act;; ELSE stop; END

  • @tritonrocks The point isn't that you don't like this version, the point is you have been a total jerk about it. "White trash?" "Hillbilly?" Just what exactly makes you superior to him that you can call him that? What if I went on one of your vids and call you these slurs? Its pretty easy to run your mouth when you aren't having your life's work torn apart by a self-centered rasict.

  • Tony is elegance personified.

  • One of the best albums of all time. Period.

  • @tricolorpicks I just don't like the guy. This absolutely classic Lightfoot song gets trashed with Tony's "bluegrass" rendition of it. I wish Tony left it alone.

  • Comment removed

  • Come on Tony how about giving credit to the composer of this beautiful song! I won't say who it is since he won't.

  • @jackoman1959 Tony has covered about as many Gordon Lightfoot songs as he has written his own. It really doesn't seem like much of an omission on his part.

It would get a little redundant if he announced every time he played one. :P

  • anyone who talks crap about rice dont deserve to listen to him, get a life tard

  • great song and as a bonus Jerry's mullet deserves a trophy!

  • what a sweet song performed by some of the best musicians...EVER ^^

  • He took the time to tell us about his new album, took the time to say the name of it, and took the time to say the name of the tune. it would have been nice if he'd mentioned that it was a Gordon Lightfoot song and NOT a Tony Rice song. The playing is very good, but I can do without Mr. Rice himself. The dobro guy is quite good, though.

  • Very nice bluegrass.

  • The Tony Rice Sings Gordon Lightfoot album is one my most prized possesions !

  • The Tony Rice Sings Gordon Lightfoot album is one of the best Albums I own !

  • @tritonrocks I'd like to see a video of you singing and pickin' away. Show us how it's done.

  • @andymica Personally I'd like to see "tritonrocks" punched in the face by Tony, then set on fire by me. But that's just me. Tony's playing is clean, crisp, precise and his singing was unique.

  • @andymica I don't claim to know how to play a guitar. I do play keyboard (quite well) and a few other instruments, but not guitar. I just don't like his style, and his version of Shadows, well, sucks.

  • @tritonrocks Well then.... show us your version of Shadows on piano so we can critique you. It's okay to not like someone's version of a song but is it necessary to piss on it.

  • Comment removed

  • I agree with andymica, why don't you make an own recording and show us you are better? Its not an easy song you know.

  • @dizzey05 Wow, you idiots are still at it about my comment on Tony Rice. I don't like his version of Shadows. Gordon Lightfoot's is much better. This version sounds too "hillbilly". Sorry. That's how it is, folks.

  • @tritonrocks That's how it is for You, Hoss.

  • @tritonrocks you're repulsive

  • this band is so tight it's rediculous

  • While this may not be one of Tony's best vocal efforts, he used to have an excellent singing voice until he sustained damage to his vocal cords, related to dysphonia. And has also always been one of the best flatpickers on the planet. There is definitely something wrong with anyone who says Tony Rice sucks.

  • Tony Rice is so amazing.

  • This shithead "tritonrocks" must have brain trauma sir you truly do have shit for brains.

  • tritonrocks, what a pansy, you cant defend yourself or talk to people like that unless you're in front of a computer where no one can see you. what a pitiful existence. youre a troll just trying to get a rise, probably a pimple faced fifteen year old dork with no friends.

no one is asking you to like it or dislike it just shut up!

  • Go listen to the Alison Krauss version, which is almost as good as Gordon Lightfoot's version, and definitely MUCH better than this sick version of it. I have my speakers turned down, it's that bad.

  • TheElMarsh what the hell are you talking about playing perfect? This is what they do. It is natural for them. Just like when you go and sack groceries-natural.

  • How does it get any better than this? Awesome

  • man, I watch this everyday. I can't imagine the pressure on these guys, the pressure from playing so perfectly

  • If that's Hillbilly - so is Bach ! What a great arrangement - and well sung too ! If I could strum a guitar 1/2 as well as Tony Rice; I would be better than a dozen Gordon Lightfoot clones ! And Jerry Douglas (adding that hillbilly twang) is wonderful !

  • Tony Rice is the best at playing GL songs.. 1) Home from the forest, 2) Shipwreck of Edmund Fitzgerald.. and THIS

  • AH. This is so good

    Thanks

  • @tritonrocks " This version is way too "hillbilly". I feel like I should be drinking cheap moonshine while I listen to it. " How does that make this a bad performance?

  • Native American is one of my top 10 favorite albums of all time - I learned SO many tasteful guitar licks of this albumn...aplied them to all kinds of music.

  • genius music, fucking awesome

  • That's Gordon Lightfoot's song.

  • Amazing.

Love the song, love Tony. Its a perfect combination.

  • Damn, Jerry Douglas had some big hair! :)

  • Flux's hair is longer than Tony's!

  • ENGLISH LESSON 101:

Please allow me to correct your post. It should have been:

    Triton, you're a fucking idiot!

    ^ ^

^ "you're" for "you are", not "your"

    ^

    Capital "T"

If you're going to post, at least show us something better than a dumb, 5th-grade educated hillbilly.

  • triton your a fucking idiot!

  • Good thing a crooked nose doesn't stop him from being the best bluegrass flattop picker on the planet.

  • triton your a fucking idiot!

  • Hey, how's Mr. Nude Country doing these days? I saw a picture of him and he looks like he's 80 years old. I'm quite unimpressed with his singing. I really gave it a chance. It's terrible. And too "twangy" for me.

  • I stand by my comments. Tony Rice is too hillbilly for me. Gordon Lightfoot did a MUCH better version of this song. Listen to a Gordy version from the early 80's to Tony Rice here and, hands down, Gordy wins.

Tony Rice should have been on Hee Haw!

  • That's cause Gord wrote it! Nobody beats Gord...But its a good remake

  • At the opening it sounds like he says:

"Welcome back. You're watching NUDE country and I'm Tony Rice."

Hillbillies just can't talk, can they?

  • tony rice is anything but a hillbilly.... he is one of the most articulate guitarist that has ever lived!!! and thats not just me sayin that its been proven time and time again

  • What a stuck-up snob you must be... then again, jealousy tends to bring out the worst in people. I can totally understand though, a lot of people envy Tony's guitar skills (and you apparently, are one of those people).

  • Bigdaddydon is sending me nasty, nasty notes, just because of comments I made about Tony Rice. Tony's version is bad; Lightfoot's is much, much better.

Bigdaddy, you should change your name to TheBigBABYdon. That would be more appropriate. Now vote my comment down to a -6 so you don't have to look at it. Baby.

  • Another awesome job by the Mac Daddy!

  • Tritonrocks? What the fuck? You wouldn't know good music if it slapped you in the mouth.

  • Good, but Lightfoot has the heart that is lacking here. Alyson Krauss does a nice job with this Gord song.

  • If you like this, then I highly recommend the Tony Rice Sings Gordon Lightfoot album available through Rounder Records.

  • Written by Gordon Lightfoot. Gord's album Shadows is incredible.

  • Gordon Lightfoot does an awesome version too

  • Jerry Douglas, the god of the dobro

  • How about "Uncle " Josh Graves??

  • uhhhhh... jaret carter

  • Beautiful, beautiful song.

  • All you can say about Tony Rice is:WOW!!!!

  • My dad introduced me Tony's music when I was little. I have been very thankful ever since!

    Tony is a wonderful musician!

  • Gosh this song is so beautiful...

I love Tony Rice so much, and I love it when he sings Gordon Lightfoot's music. Its... amazing.

  • this Dreadnought was built in 1934,Mr Rice give her a reason to live, and shure give us all flatpickers a chance to lovely dreams, tha

  • It is actually a 1935 D-28 but either way prolly the best tone to ever come out of a dreadnought was Tony Rice behind that guitar!

  • oups,i thought that Martin decals on headstock appearing in 1935, and his don't have some, thanks about the answer, P

  • Well that may be true to some extent about the decals on the headstock, I do not know that.. but Ricky Wasson, JD Crowe's guitar player has a 1935 D-28 herringbone with a logo on the headstock. Remember though, that Tony's guitar was heavily modified even before Clarance White had the guitar... so it could be possible that the headstock logo wore off or another overlay was placed on it when the Gretch fingerboard was placed on it when Clarance bought the guitar...

  • ok, so the only way is the sérial number from it??? happy runs , P

  • "Native American" was the first Tony Rice cassette I owned (yeah, I said cassette - I now have it on CD). And the opening song, "Shadows" just spoke to me and I've loved it since. Great video! I'd love to find him doing Joni Mitchell's "Urge for Going."

    -g-

  • I would love to see Tony and Gordon perform together. Both briliant muscians.

  • Nice work as always - too bad he didn't credit Lightfoot at the opening for writing such a good song. By the way urface - your act is getting old; trolling around leaving stupid comments on random videos. Get a life.

  • In many ways, Tony is a tribute to Gordon, and he would be the first to admit it. I can't tell you how many times I have heard him in person say, "This is another song from Gordon Lightfoot."

  • amazing song!! the brothers barton do an awesome version when they play live.

  • Awesome never heard it before

  • This is wonderful. I remember this on TNN, around 1988, I taped it too. I saw Tony that year at the Stewart Theatre - NCSU.

  • Nice stuff. He sounds great and looks cool.

  • Great song....one of my favorites out of the Lightfoot collection.

  • Tony is the man!
