in case no one else has responded, i think (and i don't know ben personally), but i think he is saying that it seems like we do all the things we do without caring at all about who it effects. no one's perfect, everyone uses their time more selfishly than they ought, but to do so with little care at all, not aware of how selfish it is and how little a difference we make in the world, that's just sad.

@Cerinth I think he's talking more about the people who do realize how their actions affect others and how selfish they are being, but still choose not to do anything to change themselves.
@Cerinth - I agree with what you are saying to a certain extent. I have mixed feelings about this song as he definitely makes a point about selfish, careless people. However, the U.S. is (for now) the most generous country when it comes to helping other countries during natural catastrophes (e.g, Haiti, etc).
His lyrics may be coming true given the current national debt total and credit rating of the U.S. I think it is not #1 anymore and God is moving his blessings elsewhere.
We are a nation (U.S.) of consumers concerned more about the clothes we wear, the car we drive, and the religion we believe in while showing no compassion for another. We are consumed by what the media tells us is "beautiful." Pretty sad if you ask me.
I can always appreciate a song with an 'in your face" message. Ben Folds rocks!
@xxxFUxxxx whats wrong w/ those concerns? we do not fear hunger or poverty in the u.s. (most dont and those that do dont concern themselves w/ those things) so whats so bad about caring about something that doesnt matter? what do you want us to be?
it speaks that absolute truth about americans these days. Everybody is getting so damn greedy and until we get what we want we dont give a shit about anybody else. We just are worrying ourselves and not "giving a fuck" about other people. That's what i get from the song.
o shit. i went there to visit some relatives. at 1 am i was stopped by a cop, and he said to not even worry about stopping at the red lights/ stop signs. because i might get robbed or shot.
Not going to like, I am everrulingcrown. He did modify my message. I said "you played it back in Pittsburgh" when I was talking to him on Myspace IM.
Ever Ruling Crown is the meaning of my fist name Steve (Crown) with my middle name Eric (Ever Ruling) and now you know and knowing is half the battle ("G.I. JOOOE!")
i miss Ben Folds Five though... gah, they were suchh a good trio!!! check out this DVD of them playing live attt.. uhm i think its called West 54th Street in new york? its something like that.. anyway, fucking amazinggggg. haha. back in the day! it was music from their first album that was put out in like 1991.
Loved BFF too, but Folds has grown. Carved out a piece of obscure music history for history to judge. F*ck everyone else, we know 'The Nerd' reigns supreme.
youtube should have more ways for people to communicate to each other....like this site gagla.com_ GAGLA DOT COM, it even has a webcam chat, how cool is that?
The person who apparently made the request commented here months ago saying that it didn't actually write "at our wedding" and that B. Folds made it up on the spot. Not sure if it's true, but it does seem slightly Ben-ish... doesn't it?
This is what I love about YouTube, I personally get to see things and artist usw/etc., that I would EVER get to see! I love your piano playing BEN! The Jazzy bit does it for me! ;o)
If you guys like this song, check out his appearance on the Henry Rollins Show. Hit up Independant Film Channel dot com and check it out. I think it's (IFC dot Com.)
I think it's actually better withOUT the backup band.
