The difference between Miley and Petty is Petty's irony, euphemism, and humor in this song whereas Miley's lyrics are superficial and stripped of subtlety.
the old music has lots of symbolism - candy, greens, put it on the table = before we go all the way, I like candy without the greens, so please shave the candy...pretty cool lyrics
Hey, who's arguing? Cale, Knopfler, BB King, Scotty Moore, BTO, Jagger..........they've all got signature sounds. The Candy tune is a dead-ringer for the Cale "sound". That's a good thing. But if you want to get all technical here, there were probably only ten original ideas (sorry about that Plato) and five tunes when time began. Everybody's been either improvising or plagerizing 'em ever since.
@MileyCyrusTrueLove how? miley cant play cant sing has a terrible band doesnt know what real music is and apperently neither do you i mean how do you get "i dont drink Coca-Cola but i sure like an old moonshine" to "yeaaah lets party in the usa" i mean are you deaf or aware of what music is made up of like beats and how theses have NOTHING in common?
@MileyCyrusTrueLove I love Miley Cyrus and Tom Petty if you can believe that but seriously I have never heard such a stupid statement, the two songs sound nothing alike at all and their sound isn't even on the same level so I don't know what song you're listening to but it can't be either of those.
@MileyCyrusTrueLove OBVIOUS TROLL IS OBVIOUS! But on a serious note, all respect to Tom Petty and what he's done to become a legend of his craft; however, this song licks my balls.
Worse? Hell, it makes it 200% better. Check out Cale's "Call Me The Breeze" (not Synyrd's cover). and note the similar licks and instrumental bed as "Candy". Cale's the man.
@mck8813 , don't you think it's a waste of time to argue about what is sounds like? All bands are influenced by their predecessors....from Led Zeppelin to MGMT. A human being doesn't go through life without being influenced by others.
...wonderful riff...wonderful song...wonderful guitars...wonderful "less is more" drumming by the master of groove Steve Ferrone...wonderful "nonsense" lyrics...

Reminds me of "Party in the USA" by Miley Cyrus. I wouldn't be surprised if she sues Tom Petty for plagiarism.

She can't be serious about that comment. I mean, he'd never steal from that Cyrus Child?

Eh... a pretty derivative song IMO. It's just a blues shuffle in verse-chorus-verse... no bridge, no breakdown...
I enjoy the song alright, but this would fit snugly on any blues album. What distinguishes "Candy"?
