Dig the tune. Dig Mike. I think the cello is a miss. Sure, it sounds OK, and it's a bit of a novelty, but this would have sounded better with a real bass register or as a solo singer w/guitar. Speaking of which, the tone on that guitar was so tinny! Maybe it was the mic but the vocals sounded great.

I like MIke Doty alot always have. Miss Soul Coughing. They broke up when I was still in highschool I think '98??... Or maybe after that. I saw them live back when I was in Highschool. They did the song Soft Serve from their Irresistable Bliss. Probably one of the best live songs I've ever heard.

I think he signed on with Dave Mathews. That's a shame.

do you mean ATO records? why the hell does it matter who puts his records out? apparently your too cool to respect dave matthews and i don't like his music either but there are plenty of great artists on ATO. its not a "shame" that he signed with ATO, its a business. more people will have the chance to hear his music and mike will probably end up making more money and have the chance to put out more music. that's is what you like right? the music? right?

Seriously, I'm not just trying to be an asshole hater but a paragon of musicianship? That is a mighty bold claim for such a straightforward and strummy piece of music. Look up Dave and Tim at Radio City Music Hall and you'll get yourself some "paragon of musicianship."

I don't know anything about Mike Doughty, and I never even heard of him until yesterday, when I heard this song on the radio (the "real" studio version, of course) for the first time. It's awesome! Catchiest new song I've heard in the last year. How can anyone NOT like it?! Cool guitar work, catchy chord pattern, wry and funny lyrics, and his what-the-hell vocal style exactly fits the mood of the song. Nice!

if youre a real Doughty fan, see the movie Evenhand. He wrote 4 original songs for it, 3 are in the movie, 1 is in the special features, and the dvd has a long interview with him and plays some music too
