Hayate's relationship with Hitomi hasn't been explained as far as how they feel for each other. How they met has though: after Hayate lost his memories due to Project Episilon, DOATEC left Hayate to die in the Black Forests in Germany, Project Episilon having been deemed a failure. Hitomi & her father presumably nursed him back to health, and her father taught Hayate (given the name Ein, presumably by Hitomi or her father due to not remembering his own) German karate.
