  • what about a window on the roof?

  • @jesudel it a good idea to.to put window on the roof.but the point here is to save money..they cannot afford to buy windows and put it on the roof hehehe ..

  • idea semplice ed utile

  • Wow this is so creative!

  • can u plz tell me the other uses of bleach... where is it basically used???

  • @nehasahni02 it is also called chorine i think. they use it make clothes look whiter when you wash them and to disinfect water and other stuff. i dont know the hindi name though.

  • hi, can u plzz tell me what kind of a bleach i need 4 this... i'm unable to make the shopkeeper understand, what bleach exactly is?? is there some other names used 4 bleach in Indian market in Hindi..!

  • @nehasahni02 Zonrox is the brand that we commonly use here in philippnes

  • @nehasahni02 try zonrox brand... u know, the transparent liquid use to make clothes whiter?.. u use it with laundry soap..

  • @airwolfjan hi, thanks 4 d suggestion.. will any detergent soap will do.. i belong to india.. so i think v don't get "zonrox" brand here.. v get "robin" brand bleach here..!!

  • @nehasahni02 i c.. any transparent bleaching brand is ok..get the transparent clear bleach so that the water wont get murky..

  • hi

  • A brilliant idea to help the less fortunate. I wonder if we can donate our empty bottles to them for producing these lights?

  • Nobody invent window for them?

  • @alnazmin

no because the wall of the house their is no space

  • @alnazmin a small plastic transparent window on the roof maybe an alternative but it will only have the light in one direction with out the water refraction. and besides, those people cannot afford to have a window built, and its a litle use to have windows on the wall coz light wont penetrate inside due to the fact that these houses are very close to each other, i mean very close...

  • This reminds me of the old glass prisms that they used to utilize on whaling ships.

My question is... what if you need light at night or on a rainy day in you "dark dwelling," as they refereed to the home as?

  • @Cmdrscott1701 if u cant afford the electricity bill, its much better to have atleast a bright day than having it dark both day n night.. anyway we r used to have candles or kerosene lamps during the night if we dont have electricity in the philippines ...

  • I've lived through these conditions when I was still a kid. Back then we had to share one whole chicken to feed 3 families. I had to give up the best part of my chicken to my sister just cause she was younger & I did as much as I can to make her smile a lil' bit when it comes to food, despite the living conditions. It's ideas like these that gives a lot of people a tad bit of comfort in their lives. It's terrible how some people here actually have the guts to shoot them down with their comments.

  • What a lot of vile comments from the first world to the third world.

I hope the first world is proud of itself.

  • A lot of them have electricity, but they can't afford it, because Philippines has most expensive electricity in Asia.

  • 2 people work for power companies.

  • Silly gimmick. Would be more useful to teach them how NOT to have 8 children.

  • @argo1argo1 go crawl in 6 feet deep hole. And die.

  • what do you do when it causes glare on your laptop?

  • just install transparent plastic roof morons!

  • Comment removed

  • @karinablacktie if you replaced the entire roofing sheet from galvinised steel to plastic sheet...the refraction point would be mute, you obviously didn't read the comment. Galvinised sheet is more expensive in the first place and doesnt last as long...but keep believing this invention is clever.

  • @batley1 plastic sheet cant withstand the wear and tear from the sun and storms, not to mention falling debris also..and these families most of them dont buy new GI sheets.. they would rather buy 2nd hand GI sheets from the shop..

  • @ssyoki plastic roofs are more expensive than this simple invention, moron!

  • @ssyoki and that would cost how much? u have good idea.. but this is a lot cheaper...

  • Genius. Couple this with a few mirrors or a reflective metal "shade" around the top edge, and the light would be amplified. Absolutely brilliant concept, and truly valuable for those using it.

  • @BoingoloidBurke That would restrict the amount of light entering the bottle, and would also increase the cost.

  • Awesome

  • これ東北すべきだよ!!皆に言って欲しい!!

    日本全体でやってみようよ?

    これは、素晴らしい!!!!

  • 貧困地域にお金ではなく知恵を届けるというのはいいですね。

  • INDIOS BRAVOS! :DDDDDD hahaha!

  • And then at night, it refracts moonlight for a romantic soft light effect, which then contributes further to the country's overpopulation... :)

  • I am dying to try this. Where can we find out more?

  • This is awesome. :)

  • This is soooooo cool!

  • soooo guuut

  • bravo

  • And then it turns dark and...

  • @michaelhernsin Its not meant to replace a light bulb at night. It's to save using electricity during the day!

  • Excellent idea!!!

  • @abmac did you see electricity ran to any of those shanties? didnt think so. even if it was, do you think they could afford it? also the creation of jobs in impoverished communities is an amazing thing. the holes also appear to have been sealed, thus no leaks. go grab another footlong, or maybe buy some lightbulbs for someone living in the dark (including possibly yourself) ...

  • @donnassecretgarden A lot more work, more expensive, and leakier when it rains... These are probably so cheap I could buy "lightbulbs" for a dozen families for the cost of a Subway footlong. Plus, "Reuse" is one of the three R's.

  • This is the same idea behind the glass discs in fron of many buildings in SOHO. They illuminate the storage basements below the sidewalk.

  • This is similar to what the oldtime sailors used aboard ship, where they would put a glass lens through the deck. These can be seen in Mystic CT, where there is at least one ship that sports these! Speaking of ships, they may be "missing the boat", since they could be saving the bottle caps to redeem for items at both the Coke and Pepsi websites and possibly others. They could cover the opening with the sealant they now use, or other scrap plastic or metal.

  • @YardleyFiske

    Here is a link to device I mentioned: w w w. glassian. org/Prism/index. html

  • @YardleyFiske I have seen those they are called ship's crystals.

  • simply wonderful!

  • What if water proof leds were added to the bottles, a panel and batteries?

  • Litros de luz

  • This is not new, in Brazil they have made the same experiment in 2008...search here on YouTube for: "Litros de Luz - acabou o risco de apagão".

  • :18 You've got a TV but no lights?

  • @heysmithy this is just to save electricity during the peak hours of the day..

  • I think the project is fantastic! congratulations! what would happend in the future, when de bottles don work anymore? are you still going to support?

  • watch it carefully at 1:15 if you put only water, algy will build up in the bottle and absorb much of the light

  • what happens if you put only water in the bottle?

  • @paulsavenue12 mold will grow more rapidly, making it cloudy and thereby transmitting less light. Without the bleach, probably just a few days time in the heat there.

  • Great, smart! Keep on 'thinking' :D

  • @donnassecretgarden Not everyone can afford to buy a window and secure it on their fragile roofs :|

  • @sirashwin Also, a window will not spread the light throughout the whole room, whereas the bottle does AND the sunlight falling through the window would heat the room up a lot more quickly then through a bottle. It gets hot as crap in the Philippines.

  • Small(mind) is beautiful LLLL

    Hulle Luia !!!!

  • Brilliant! Now a solution for night time!

  • @sphinxart Your nighttime solution: It's called sleeping.

  • @x3772 Hahaha but I have insomnia 8-)

  • Smart guy. I love this.

  • Wonderful! Our creativity is infinite. You have proven it.

  • 本当に素晴らしい! 知識が知恵に変わった瞬間だ(^∀^)

  • Simple, rugged, reliable, effective. Bravo, just Bravo people

  • miracles of an ingenious mind...!!! :)

  • Comment removed

  • now that's ingenious. Hope he gets the Nobel prize!

  • great!

  • @Mixed123456 : same ! I typed "water bleach light" on Youtube to find this Reuters video and found this 2008 vid ... that I remembered having seen . But the very smiling guy from MIT in white (bleached ?) shirt is a lot more "presentable". Occident science RULES ! ;-)

  • students from where discovered the tech ? may you take a look this video,

    watch?v=_zMAWztZ6TI

  • just to reiterate, marami na gumawa nyan sa ibang bansa, baka magpanggap naman ang mga tao na sila umimbento

  • Nice!

  • Wow. Now that's elegant.

  • Wonderful! The Ancient Egyptians used mirrors to refract light to go through a home or a palace as well. Necessity is the Mother of Invention.

  • wow... simple yet effective

  • Impressive.
