You might try replacing the battery with an Optima yellow or red top battery. They are a scroll style battery instead of a plate design they are a deep cycle battery that does very well in cold too. Or hook up a trickle charger..but get a good one
There is no Optima battery available for the smart. The batter compartment is stamped into the tridion (chassis) and allows a smaller than normal but larger than motorcycle type battery.
Well that sucks, You could look into some of the high end Motorcycle batteries. MotoBatt makes some awesome batteries. They got some good reviews under torture testing. You will have to figure out which one might fit correctly. But might be worth it to try. Search for MotoBatt torture test, they really beat the crap out of the battery and it did very well. If no other choice I guess put a trickle charger pig tail onto the battery and run the connector out to a good location
That happened to my Mom's car. Luckily I installed a pigtail for a CTEK battery charger so I don't have to burrow through the passenger side footwell to access the battery.
@CDeuce152 that's a great suggestion - I should really leave it on a trickle charge if I'm not running it often enough.. will look into those chargers ... it is a pain in the arse to get to the battery most definitely!
@TheDudleyheathens Yep it's a Avic Z3 (2DIN hard-drive based) which was aftermarket at the time, but made by Pioneer like the Factory Radio 9/10 and newer DVD based Avic D3 etc ;)
@starlord I hear great things about the Mercedes/Daimler made engines, people up here say the car (even though it is much smaller) does very well in Wintertime.. I think they went to the Mitsubishi engines as a cost savings as well to squeeze a bit more HP in the same space. No diesel CDi's ever made it to the 451 model though :(
I had no problems starting my smart car at -21C.

Battery is not enough charge. I already have the same problem with my 450 Diesel at -27 ! But when the battery is fully charged, it start very well !
10.7 Volt, it is similar to me !
