He is now on a new tour with his own band and pacing his own time because it was too much. He's openly admitted, (as of 5/30/11), that he needed time to sit down. I never assumed his 2/14/11 time in re-hab was a relasp. That's where he went for needed strength. Keep praying. It works :)
There is something truly special about this family. A mother who can get 10 kids to love Christ from the depth of theirs hearts, minds and souls deserves an award made out of pure gold. Not to mention teach them how to tap their God given talent. A standing ovation and applause to Mama DeBarge
Can someone tell me what year this was? Also, who is on the stage with El and James when they start singing "Tis So Sweet?" How is El doing now? Is he still in rehab? I've been "standing in the gap" and praying for weeks now with a burden of prayer for him! It's like he's a member of my family . . . and I've never met him. But I care deeply about what happens to him. It's the Holy Spirit I know!

I pray that God will sustain El to overcome his addiction. We cannot pray "away" everything that is hard. We go "through" things 90% of the time. God will get him through this. He needs to have God's wisdom, discipline and selfcontrol to not fall into temptation again. Surround himself with Charlie Wilson, Etta James, Smokey and others who have beaten addiction and stayed clean for years. He has to cut out certain people in his life that support his old habits.Rehab is the best thing for him.

Racism, beatings from there own father, drugs, and deaths of their sibblings. The were raised in church and they had a praying mother who stayed in church and never gave up. I have this in my daily favorites. I listen to this version sometimes everyday. It is better than the one on El's CD. This family actually needs a gospel contract. Geffen or Sony or somebody needs to offer them a big contract to do gospel! Many, Many legends have done both R&B and Gospel sucessfully. Aretha Franklin, Donnie Hathaway, Al Green, Ray Charles. Just to name a few. God doesn't have any issues with How his gifts are used. It's "RELIGIOUS FOLKS" that put us all in boxes.

I don't see any problem with what James did. Who was to say he wasn't "caught up" in the moment with the anointing? Some of you don't realize that this family was born and raised in the Apostolic church under Elder James Abney in Grand Rapids, Michigan. So they know and understand service, praise and worship. James was just going back to his roots. God is a God of forgiveness and unlike us, he doesn't throw what we've done back in our face, but throws it into the sea of forgetfulness!

The church was and is Bethel Pentecostal Church under the late (and still great) Bishop William C Abney. The denomination was the PAW (Pentecostal Assemblies of the World). And James Abney (affectionately known as Uncle James to just about everybody) was a great influence in worship service as anyone who grew up in that church can attest to.

That is true, but still...what about The Jacksons, they had serious demons from the hands of their father, Joseph. Every body has demons, it is the way you handle the demons and not let them take advantage of your lifestyle. I pray the DeBarges find healing and reunite for a new album and tour.

I was born in 1977 too, and this was one of my favorite groups of all time back then. All there songs you felt something.... I don't care what mood you where in... You still got those chills. I understand there family had some issues. But what family doesn't???? They are very talented!!!! I will always love them. And YES, they need to come out with something. El Debarge sang lead in most of the group Debarge's songs. Bobby Debarge was the older brother and the lead singer of the group Switch. Bobby DeBarge is deceased. I think many people confuse the two brothers because they had similar sounding voices and looks. FYI if you watch "Debarge Unsung" (available on you tube) it explaines the family dynamic pretty well. This family has been through alot.

They had the 22 minute version on Mama DeBarge's MySpace page, but she took it down for some reason. I don't know what it is, but it's not there anymore. I thought the 22 minute version was very emotional.
Also, it is sad that El is in prison. I hope that he can clean himself up and find some healing.

I don't see any problem with what James did. Who was to say he wasn't "caught up" in the moment with the anointing? Some of you don't realize that this family was born and raised in the Apostolic church under Elder James Abney in Grand Rapids, Michigan. So they know and understand service, praise and worship. James was just going back to his roots. God is a God of forgiveness and unlike us, he doesn't throw what we've done back in our face, but throws it into the sea of forgetfulness!

@ElderChuckAnderson I agree with you Elder. Maybe folks don't understand James' (Debarge) praise because they do not fully know his story. The church was and is Bethel Pentecostal Church under the late (and still great) Bishop William C Abney. The denomination was the PAW (Pentecostal Assemblies of the World). And James Abney (affectionately known as Uncle James to just about everybody) was a great influence in worship service as anyone who grew up in that church can attest to.

I personally love the Debarges and it is my prayer that despite the pain they've endured and the sins that they've committed.... just like any other sinner.... God can save em' and make them new creatures to be used for his will and his glory. I think one son is dead and about 2 others are in jail. God is so awesome and worthy to be praised.

They are accomplished piano, drummers, and horn players as well as real singers. Gospel or R&B, God will use them. 22 years of getting off drugs, he is a living testimony for sure!

You guys need to start doing Gospel music! Just let COGIC know ahead of time. COGIC has over 8 million members and you guys were one of the few secular artists that COGIC members felt comfortable listening to, so they will support you big time! We loved SWITCH also!

Listen to some of the intros (especially pay attention to the piano on "In A Special Way"). Even Stevie had to go back to church roots, and it's all good. My grandfather was a COGIC pastor from his youth til death, and he would call this music of the devil. We are created in His image and feel these things. As long as it does not cross that line and cause us to stumble . . .

That is true, but still...what about The Jacksons, they had serious demons from the hands of their father, Joseph. Every body has demons, it is the way you handle the demons and not let them take advantage of your lifestyle. I pray the DeBarges find healing and reunite for a new album and tour.

Ok. lol This performance but in the middle there I starting being reminded of "All This Love." I love it. Demons are so, so strong in this world and I pray that they are all released from there's at some point. Hopefully sooner than later.
Did Motown really strip El's publishing? That's horrible. I still hear those songs on the radio, there's no reason they (all DeBarges) shouldn't get their due.

He has a beautiful daughter who is reaching her goals everyday. James has never disrespected Janet Jackson and their relationship and that shows maturity. Just watching this video and seeing El play that keyboard piano so well, it just hurts me that he is in pain and suffering. El is one of the best R&B singers of all time, and it's very sad that Motown took away his publishing of the hit songs he wrote with DeBarge.

I was born in 1977 too, and this was one of my favorite groups of all time back then. All there songs you felt something.... I don't care what mood you where in... You still got those chills. I understand there family had some issues. But what family doesn't???? They are very talented!!!! I will always love them. And YES, they need to come out with something. Even if they just produce somebody. Keep those chills moving. God is good all the time. And all the time god is good.

El Debarge sang lead in most of the group Debarge's songs. Bobby Debarge was the older brother and the lead singer of the group Switch. Bobby DeBarge is deceased. I think many people confuse the two brothers because they had similar sounding voices and looks. FYI if you watch "Debarge Unsung" (available on you tube) it explaines the family dynamic pretty well. This family has been through alot.

They had the 22 minute version on Mama DeBarge's MySpace page, but she took it down for some reason. I don't know what it is, but it's not there anymore. I thought the 22 minute version was very emotional.
Also, it is sad that El is in prison. I hope that he can clean himself up and find some healing.
