They were worried about the cash crops from the southern sates cotton & tobacco. If they lost those then they would lose that income for their government & the south would have a monopoly on these crops causing the union to go bankrupt or elsewhere for the crops paying more for shipping.

If we don't own it then we don't own the oil. Southern Democrats who voted against civil rights were not Liberal; they were Conservative and voted as a bloc with Republicans on many issues. Northern Democrats who were Liberal and Moderate Republicans voted for Civil Rights.
Also, Lincoln would have likely been a Democrat today; his strong federal policies would not be welcome in today's GOP.

They were worried about the cash crops from the southern sates cotton & tobacco. If they lost those then they would lose that income for their government & the south would have a monopoly on these crops causing the union to go bankrupt or elsewhere for the crops paying more for shipping.

Meaning that the south could keep their slaves as long as they didn't "expand" their land outside of what they already had. Lincoln was not an abolitionist. He didn't call for the immediate end for slavery everywhere until the 13th amendment became part of his party platform for the 1864 election.

In fact, many of them went to the republican party after the civil rights act. Either way the parties are completely different today than they were.
