Guys, I was there, and he wasn't doing any playback. The cymbal sound at 2:50 must have been added afterwards. I don't know what the idea would be in that, but actually Lars wasn't very tight that evening, and I was a bit unsatisfied with his playing. And that untightness in the drums was certainly not from a backing track.

lars fucked up a bit the playing that was captured here, metallica - as pro's as they are - just replaced the audiotrack on livemetallica with the perfect played take from another show of the copenhagen-days.

Lars plays the same beat as the adding playback, so the reason is probably to make the song more powerful. As RaukerN said, at 2:50 you can hear the crash but he's not hitting it. By myself to judge I don't have a real opinion in this, I have always been a Fan and appreciated there music. If it woul'd turned out that they are using playback during most of there shows(which i hardly disbelieve) that would be realy deplorable.

You never get a playback sound that sounds like live, you have something with your ears man. Compare playback intros during the show to this, it's so different. You can't let studio things sound like a live performance.

Well and a fan video with added soundboard audio can never be taken as evidence, often videos go out of sync etc.- but you seem to be the uber pro... I'm not pretending Metallica, but you have got no single proof, edited videos aren't something you can rely on in this case.
