Beat vid - what's up with the Rock Island passenger cars...just some excursion train? John Eagan is responsible for getting Atlas to make those HO scale RS units, so kudos for stirring up somemore attention for this old railroad. Can't wait for his book either.
I am the owner of the Erie Western yahoo group and if you'd like to learn more about the ERES, feel free to join us. As for those who asked about Round Lake interlocking, the signal bridge is still there and easily photographed from a nearby country road. John Eagan is going to be releasing a book this fall on the Erie Western, details will eventually be available at my yahoo group page.
@conrailman Thanks for the invite but i have been a memeber of your group for quite some time now. looking forward to the book. plan on getting myself a copy.
Neat video - I like the look of that RS. Revelation Video has two great DVDs on the EL across Indiana, "EL West End" & "EL Legacy". Highly recommended. I grew up close to Goshen/Elkhart in the 70's so I never really knew the EL.
Great tribute, i am only 28 years old and i love any info i can get about the erie western. I just found a erie western grain hopper for my trainset, i was stoked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is a set of abandoned signals in Indiana I want to see out near Laketon. Where the EL created a control point from double track to single track during the 1950's. I think it was called the Round Lake switch.
The signals for the double track to single track are still there and I'd like to photograph them sometime.
I have to get out there sometime and get some shots of it, if it is still there. This was RX Round Lake Interlocking. Where double track mains went down to single track. This signal was used for eastbound movement and a searchlight was used for westbound movement.
Conrail knew the Erie Lackawanna's Chicago-Marion line was superior to the other lines it had. Including the ex-NYC line. They didn't want a competitor like Santa Fe, which was looking at the line, to acquire it. The construction of the line with wide clearances made it attractive.
Double Stacks could have travelled on it from Chicago to New York without problems.
I agree. The line was 99.5 feet wide, laid with heavy 132re to 136re rail, CTC and very minimal congestion. Online traffic was sparse at best, as far as local industry was concerned, but for the hotshot freights from New York to Chicago, it was ideal.
Nice tribute, thanks.

I can see the shadows of the signal bridge on Google Earth so it's still there. The searchlight signal might be covered by trees by now.

If you get out to RX interlocking, I'd be very much interested in pics from there.
I'm planning a trip in the future just to see where the EL went. Round Lake is on the top of my list.

Where's the "Crophopper" covered hoppers, with the designation shaped like a grasshopper?
It certainly was too damn bad to see what happened to the EL, that was outright destruction to avoid competition by Conrail.
Need to do one of these of the Spencerville and Elgin!!!

If I can find any info on SPEG, I would make one but info about them is just about a sparse as ERES info.
