Of course it was luck. All restrictor plate races are. You think Jamie McMurray won at Talladega based off driver skill? Hell no he was in the right spot at the right time. As far as Matt's Daytona 500 win, it didn't matter if the rain came early or if the race went the distance. When the race was called, Matt Kenseth was the leader, hence the winner of the race. A win is a win. Waltrip won Daytona the same way in 03 with almost half the race to go.

Well, if you look closely, the flaps are hinged at the front, so I guess they don't open sideways. Kenseth's car was perpendicular to his trajectory when he tumbled. I suppose they would need flaps hinged lengthwise for that?

But anyways, they can only help so much. At top speed, no flap can save you from the sheer aerodynamic force.

No there have been many crashes where cars have flipped like that... i.e. Goody's Dash series Daytona 1998 - AJ frank and Will Hobgood both just tipped over... also Daytona 1987 Gary Nuffer tipped his car over and it tumbled a few times... both vids are on youtube, take a look... i can still name a few more but i wont embarass u anymore

I saw this live and I admit that I couldn't race like the professionals. However does anyone feel that back in the 80's things were more dangerous? It seems that nascar is the least physical sport because people just walk away fine.

The roof flaps are most used when the car is total reverse, Kenseth cars was just 90 degrees so the flaps didnt work, any way was a cheap crash it could be lot worse.
