  • Cheap houses try the rust belt, tons of houses from 500.00 to 5,000.

  • "I like pickles." -Dan Philips

  • the junk man on steriods

  • what a wonderful idea coming from a wonderful man. this not only houses people but helps them find pride in themselves and use the tallent they didnt realise they had.

    love 'n' light, x

  • hëh_Ãñyøñé_wâñNä_chåt_wíth_mË_Ì_fÊêl_sØ_lÒnély_tôdäY∟

  • Bless him!!

  • What a wonderful person! I hope he lives to be 100. So many people need to hear his message and learn from him.

  • well done dan

  • Most excellent way to live ones life! Go Dan!!

  • Another White racist helping to raise the Black man's standard of living. Quickly, somebody call the SPLC or NAACP to report this evil racism. Do not worry, at least the noble Blacks are killing off all those evil White farmers in South Africa and Zimbabwe. It will be a world of love and peace as soon as we can get all these crackers in the ground - right? RIGHT? Channon and Christian? Be quiet, racist, we do not want to talk about them! Black good - White bad. Black good - White bad.

  • Dan Phillips' sustainable approach to affordable housing rocks! This piece is like a capsule version of a longer piece on Dan entitled "Better Bones and Gardens." It tells you the beginnings of what you need to know about Dan Phillips. Dan is someone who IS changing the world, one life at a time. Statements in this shorter piece by one of Dan's Homestead Initiative home builders, Eric, are particularly eloquent about how this is not an easy road to travel, but you have to start somewhere.

  • Amazing

  • Genius!

  • what an amazing man !!!

  • Thanks, Dan, for being so inspirational.

  • beautiful.... he is doing such a great thing to help others.... i strongly believe in reusing discarded material.... there is so much out there that others throw out thinking it is no good.....

  • this man is amazing !!!!!!!!!

  • they use clay instead of cement.

  • 14 dislikes? 14 people must live in their own perfect little world in which there is no garbage or suffering. good luck to you little princesses. stay in your ivory towers. this man is a HERO!

  • absolutely inspiration

  • In Texas maybe you could do this, not where I live.

The house has to be has to be built according to the codes, and that's traditional stick housing only according to them. Cant have a well or septic, city water only. They don't care it will cost you 100,000 to bring it in. Solar, wind turbine forget it, you will never get a permit. Has to be a minimum 1000 square feet.

During the great depression people had home steads small houses, they grew vegetables so they didn't starve today its illegal.

  • gotta find this guy!

  • I appreciate the difference that Dan is making in the lives of others. What a blessing.

  • This is great!

  • I LOVE YOU DAN. Thank YOU sooooooooooooooooooo much. I'm coming to find YOU some day. Thank YOU. Eke'vu.

  • Superlike!

  • yheeeee haaaaa

  • sound cool .... 4

  • i did the same thing built a wood house with a under ground bunker it was 90% free the wood came from a company who bought the land and building they wanted out of there,, i just happen to be there at the time got it all free!! for taking off the land! today 3 years later i am still working on it its all solar powered

  • This is what has been lost in America. The sense of what it is to be an American, to have pride, and to leave a legacy. I remember when people would buy a house and stay in that house until they died and passed it on their family. Now people just by corporate crap mcmansions that are all the same. we have lost America to corporations.

  • @pandabead its all got to change. I mean - even mathematically it can be argued that it cant stay the way its goin. Eventually the way we're goin as a whole world will get so dark there will only be one way and that is out, and that is just where we will go. People will start to and continue to make an effort to actually create good FOR THEMSELVES based on independent constructiveness until we reach some kind of new standard.

  • @mojokiss - You are RIGHT on point, and I approve this message.

  • How to build super homes with a lot of natural light and at 1/10 the cost and 80% less heating and cooling cost. Very low maintenance. Google ''$50 and Up Underground House Book''

  • Dan Phillips is a good reason more americans should ditch both dems and reps and vote Socialist instead.

  • @Biankoneri Hah! Socialist!? Now that's some bamboozlement. Okay somebody help me out.... Since when did utilizing your own talent, creativity, time and energy to realize "The American Dream" and then plant that same seed with another individual and then another and so on become a socialist ideal!?

  • @Biankoneri Hah! Socialist!? Now that's some bamboozlement. Okay somebody help me out.... Since when did utilizing your own talent, creativity, time and energy to realize "The American Dream" and then plant that same seed with another individual and then another and so on become a socialist ideal!? The American Dream and the American Way was and IS anything but socialist, my friends.

  • @JonALewis Reason is that the american housing problem is there because of the capitalist system and greed of a few people. It should be the govt.s job to solve the housing issue, not one man named Dan Phillips. In Norway the socialdemocrats have done this job for us since the war. Good luck.

  • @Biankoneri It should be the govt's responsibility to solve/provide housing??? How'bout food, jobs, travel... why not make the gov in charge of solving all the people's responsibilities? A govt powerful enough to give you everything you want is powerful enough to take everything you have! And you would be naive in thinking they would not hesitate in doing just that. It's ludicrous to believe you can't trust your neighbors decisions in governing themselves, but you can trust a politician!?

  • @JonALewis That works fine. In Norway the govt. provides jobs, housing, food and many other things. Ofcourse the govt. can't solve everyone's problems to the smallest detail, but that's not their task either.

  • @JonALewis i am more on the left side of politics.. but i really like your statement. "A govt powerful enough to give you everything you want is powerful enough to take everything you have!"

its obvious that we might disagree in some things, but its been ages since i read someone making sound statements to support their views...

    peace bro.

if you are not a home owner yet, hope you will soon.

  • @odinmp5 I too think it's important we come to understand and question what we're told, what we think, etc. I was raised very left, heck my parents had an FBI file on them for being members of the communist party back in the 50's! Growing up, I was always told to question "authority", but it wasn't until after 9/11 when I realized (and it was quite a shock to me) that I really wasn't questioning my beliefs or what I was being told in the news or as "the truth" or how it is or should be.

  • You can give a man a house and shelter him for a lifetime,

or you can teach a man to build houses and shelter hundreds for a life time.

This guy gets it. I love that.

  • this guy is a true liberatarian. Giving someone a leg up with history lessons, teaching a skill, and developing a sense of purpose is a great gift to give someone. Redistribution of weath is not!!!

  • looks and sounds good, but just one thing, how is he getting around the building codes? (like local, state and federal). i think it's all b.s. to give people false hope.

  • @gordy1957

A bigger question is how do you get the land?

If I had a patch of ground that I really owned (I mean OWNED, not RENTED from the collection of scum who call themselves the government), I could do about anything with it.

    Sincerely,

    David Parker

  • How many abodes could be built from the "Cash for Clunkers" failed program? Alot of good stuff thrown away in the guise of economic advancement. Unfortunately, taxes paid for that one too.

  • Very cool work! makes so much sense :)

  • I'm thrilled to find this man! So inspiring! Glad to find him...glad he is helping others...this is the way it SHOULD be...affordable homes...recycled stuff....all good...

  • really brilliant!! ...the phoenix is rising out of the ashes... :)

  • What a great idea!!!

  • In our decadent society, those who enslave the People the most are the

HIGHEST paid. Actors, atheletes, and politicians distract the People why

the international banksters from the Federal Reserve pick their pockets.

The NWO, bankster, mafia charges USURY interest on money that

they invent when a promisory note is signed. They then reposses real

assets when they purposely collapse economies and offshore jobs.

USURY is the cause of most of the war, hate, and poverty on the planet.

  • @truthbomb1 I guess you did not hear the decadent part that the itty bitty's cost 700,000. That seems audacious for what you get.

  • The houses look fantastic and artistic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want one!

  • Dan's building his own stairway to heaven and being he's so good hearted he doesn't even know it! the world needs people like him!

  • beautiful and very inspiring

  • that's really sweet... that guy with the dark hair seemed like he really got a life change and a self-esteem booster from dan phillips... way to go

  • The world needs more people like Dan Philips.

  • As an artisan myself this has never manifested for me. Design comes from the love of what you are doing, and this brings the form to the home.

I am still grateful for the place I own now.

    very nice work m8.

  • I want his shirt.

  • oh my god. can i live there??? that's amazing, its art

  • I want to live in one of those homes there beautiful

  • God Bless you Dan and Eric!!!!

  • This man is a genious!!!

  • God Bless You! Can they clone you? One in every town, at least another ten in every political leaders of the worlds` offices so that ` THEY CAN TRULY GET IT`. Imagine if this was just common practice EVERYWHERE.The rate of homeless DECREASED. The rate of wasting perfectly good materials .DECREASE.The contributions, sense of community achieved INCREASED & the sense of feeling of `WORTH` WELL! WHAT CAN ONE SAY. A nation of happier, fullfilled, contented people WHY? because they feel they belong!

  • This man deserves a medal for his work, his compassion, his selfless attitude and his concern for his fellow man.

    .

Compare this man;s soul and his heart to the idiots we have running this country, the greedy bankers and the filthy wall street con artists and you will find he is worth more than all of the rest combined.

  • What an amazing ability. This is so needed. My sister-in-law built one of her homes partly from scraps thrown away at lumber companies. I love to watch this come together.

  • fuking evolution

  • This man has the right idea, we can all do this by reusing old things & make a new home.

  • Minimalism - for humanity!

  • I Want A Dan Phillips Home =)

  • BRAVO you are a real good person helping people get a home that means alot to people even if its a small home this stranger helped other strangers get security in having a home. Ideas are more powerful then the fires of hell. Ideas can build worlds and destroy evil men. The world is short of men like him. Ask not what others can do for you but what can you do for the others in need of help.

  • Have to have a job...that's bullshit.

  • I think its a great idea...as long as he is building to the proper codes. With the earthquake in Haiti, it is so important to make sure these homes are structurally sound. I don't own a home yet, but I think his is beautiful.

  • I'm already inspired!

  • I agree with Blazterr55. And start this initiative all around the country. Can we clone this guy, please?

  • wow texas i live in that state

  • @africanmaan so do like a million other people

  • I love this clip, but the background music is driving me nuts. lol. What's the name of that song: "Quirky Guy with a Cork Floor"? ;D

  • good

  • I wish I could meet this guy in person and help me to build my own house

  • Hope for college kids...

  • this is true art? This vote is a lie and give the true artistic value it deserves stop lied

  • @trueartable nothing defines art more than what you see here.

  • I always got wood from this guy.... (Well recycled)

  • beeautiful

  • love the passion and vision that this innovative man has. grea video!

  • Just to say that this is pretty damn amazing :)

  • Awesome idea. Our culture seems to promote wastefulness every day. It's good to see that some people realize that the world's resources are limited, and re-using perfectly good materials is the solution to home ownership for those less fortunate.

  • Hmmm wonder if Dan, would be willing to travel to help people build their homes. Im looking at a move to arizona.. and living out of a RV till I can save up the money to build me something... Hey Dan, if ya want to come to Arizona... To help, let me know...Thanks... and May God bless you for your help to the lower class people in this country...

  • Every one should read the NY Times article on Dan. It has a great slide show and answers many questions.

  • Comment removed

  • Absolutely a marvel....love it....Good job...what a blessing !

  • that is absolutely awesome. there should be more people like dan in this world :)

  • First!!!!

  • YOU ARE AWESOME DAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Exelente ! ; gracias ,desde argentina.

  • This seems really good, but I do wonder if it's all recycled (Or the majority) what about repairs? Will it stand the test of time?? The roofs for one must have some serious issues with everything askew.

It seems awesome! No doubt about that!

  • omg, Dan perfect idea and house. I'm Dan too and I was thinking almost the same . Now I know, that those ideas can become true. :)

  • I think this is quite possibly the most beautiful video on youtube. He's right that housing prices are kept artificially high by the gov and bankers together, for their own benefit. We need more of this happening all across the whole world. You are definitely a hero of our time, Dan. Thank you.

  • this guys a genius..he should really come over to here in uk xxxxxxxx

  • this is about as selfless as a person gets. dan phillips is officially one of my heroes.

  • Way cool!

  • we love you Dannnnnnnnnnnn!

  • We love you Dan, please come to the UK and start something here :))

  • (^ please never take this down.

    (^ _prosser

  • This is so cool. I wish I had an eye for art like this.

  • j'aime , c'est sympatique , cool

  • This is wonderful! I want one!

  • @Claycat4 me tooooo!

  • I have no problem with this concept, it is a good idea and I would love to do this where I live BUT due to government regulations I cannot. I think this would be the case in most places with building codes beyond reality. Here in Oregon the building permits require a detailed build sheet and building a house like this would not pass muster, plus building permits cost big here. Leave it to big government to destroy something good and keep people from reaching thier potential. Good job my friend!

  • Yeah, those damn regulations. God forbid that they would keep assholes who don't give a shit to rake in the cash and build houses that cave in or hurt somebody in some way. Dan is obviously a "can do" guy living his potential. I would even dare say that a creative soul like Dan hasn't even begun to tap into his potential - there are not enough hours in the day for this kind of thinking.

  • Dr. Dan was my dance professor in college - he was a wonderful choreographer - how neat that he has a whole new career!

  • I would volunteer several years of my life just to learn how and continue this mans work.

If anyone knows how to get in-touch with Dan Phillips please let me know.

  • Amazing video about an amazing man! You are doing God's work, Dan... THANK YOU!

  • this "can" be done everywhere.

  • The trouble with these houses or any such project is that they are not scalable. If I want to calculate as a economist the amount of money spent in constructing low cost houses by Dan and other real estate vigilantes; there is no way to do that. So how does one continue this movement when Dan is dead, sick or away? A person is not a movement

  • Yeah... "The trouble with these houses..." Oh, what a shame - you can't calculate it. I don't think Dan was thinking about a movement and a bumper sticker when he got started. He just set that creative mind of his to work and rolled up his sleeves.

  • Unfortunately we're so dissimilar to these people.... game over for planet us.

  • the best. at least someone cares about someone other then himself.

  • good caring humanity

this is one of best videos

  • Wonderful! - Mum

    Haha.

I would love to have a house like that. I would love to own my own house one day but I only want to do it with glass bottles and tyers. Like an Earth Ship! :D

  • :-)!!!!

  • i admire these men.

  • like a womble

  • Why can't we do this everywhere?

  • I SO want have a house- something creative, like wearhouse or factory, I know people do rent out those now, but they first totally bore it up!!!

  • I share this dream of helping people build their own affordable housing and have helped many people own a home with no house payments and no utility bills.

Click on solar cabin to see how its done!

  • I Love unusual homes...thank you for sharing this great story :)

  • retarded

  • If only everyone did this.

  • Great idea, I love the house, thank you so much.

  • unbelievable ! respect !

  • I love renegades.....

  • i have wondered about those houses ..nice video..

  • Those houses are gorgeous.

    Great vid

  • Great story!!!

  • how do they get around local building codes?

  • to lamMeredithK: thats a real good question

  • I'm not sure what I think about his reusing roofing tiles but everything else is great.

I read a piece on him in the NY Times a couple days ago keep it going Dan!

  • Praise the Lord for this man! Giving people hope and sense of worth is a precious gift. And what a beautiful home!

  • What a guy! That's what it's all about, giving back, teaching and inspiring people. If only we could all embrace these ideas the world would be a much better place. The homes shown here are cosy and made with love and care. I wish I owned one because it's like a breath of fresh air after seeing all the mass produced, uniform, overpriced shoe boxes that most of us will have to opt for. Go for it dude - full steam ahead!! :)

  • Oh I saw this on TV and it was very good! Great idea.

  • Dan, you ROCK!!! This is fantastic!!!

  • Whoneeds bail-outs, when there are people Dan? This guy is a great example of "good people." Funny thing is a house like what they are building would cost a fortune to have built. Keep up the good work Dan!

  • This was an inspiring profile of an inspiring individual; well done. While it's sad that America had to experience a huge economic downturn to finally wake up and see the light on many fronts, it's good to know that resiliency remains and that even the working poor can have the dream of a home fulfilled. We've all bought into the absurd notion that you need this or that to 'fit in'. Screw that! It's all about being happy & fulfilled within and ignoring what society would push upon you.

  • thanks for reminding us to reuse materials. I liked your comment about ceramic tile being available by the metric ton- all we need do is bend over and pick it up.

  • Give the man a nobel peace-prize!

  • @Blazter55

    I agree with your sentiment!

Unfortunately Nobel Peace Prizes are only given to war-mongering assholes.

  • @Blazter55 deserves it more than obama thats for sure

  • pretty awesome... who do i have to sleep with to get a building permit?

  • umm

  • This is so neat. I'm actually about to embark on my own house building mission. My dad and I both need our houses built, and some of the design here is just really cool! Keep it up!

  • stick it to the man dan

  • this guy is good!!!!

  • I love good thinking :-) Thank you for posting this Video

  • Lol id actually like to live here it seems so cozzy

  • This is a nice blessing for those that can't afford those pricey mortgages..

I for one will never own my own home :(

  • its very cozy and very inspired.. god i'd absolutely live in a place like this..

  • I can't see myself living in something like this i like more conventional styling.

But the idea that it's build from 85 % recyclables I really like that it's good inspiration for selfbuilders.

    Thanks for sharing your ideas!

  • Great man!!! we need this to have a sunny future!!!!

  • That is the original meaning of the American dream!

  • Dan Philips I love you ;-) ....you'r doing it, not just talking about it, it's beautiful man.

  • I keep telling folk, we have everything we need already, we can do these things & they are always wonders of resourcefulness & creativity. Thank you 5*

  • Pretty cool...

  • This video is the first one I've seen that not one person is putting anyone down and using bad language! This is great great great. if our government thought like this we wouldn't be in this troubled economy! I hope he can spread this around for everyone who needs it. Good job!!!!

  • I absolutely love the place, what i can see, it is such warm and creative architecture!!. I just love this video, and the ideas exposed...hopefully more and more people can get creative like this...it would really help the culture.

  • Dan, you are totally my hero! I'm -from- Huntsville, and have been inside one of his houses. I think they are marvelous! And I reallllly love the roof on the one right across the cemetary from Mantz Park!

  • Brilliant! Write a handbook Dan and share it with the world! I run a recycling center and would love to initiate something like this with Habitat locally.

  • why are people like this not running governments? Life is simple, it takes simple solutions to solve most of the big problems.

  • great video......great ideas....Dan Philips, pure genius
