9 times out of 10, street fighters and boxers talk shit about martial arts. At that point, a street fighter or boxer must come into our house and fight under the rules you(as a street fighter or boxer) say is shit. Some people need some humility and mutual respect as fighters.
i think it denpends on the fighter if a boxer is fast on there feet and there reation are still fresh then they hav a good chance. but the fact is that u put a ufc fighter in there with an elite boxer in boxing they get schooled and vis versa. the only shot for both of winning in each others sport is to spend years working though the ranks. toneys not even an elite boxer at this stage of his carrer. although if u talk to him hes the best fighter in any sport. toney for kararte world champ?
@springbox1982 Easy route? You're an idiot, thats his background..he uses what he knows best. You can get Pat Barry or another striker in there, and then they'd get leg kicked and kneed in the clinch (since Boxers dont know what to do there) till the fight stops. There are many ways to win the fight, Boxers have one. Someone taking down a boxer isn't the "easy way out". Know how combat sports work before speaking garbage.
Vitor Belfort has offered to fight James Toney in a boxing match in the UFC with 10oz gloves. A 42yr old washed up, obese boxer that was past his prime over 5 years ago vs a fairly washed up MMA fighter, sound bloody brilliant but I bet Dana White won't let it happen.
What a load of Dana White nuthuggers. Ray Mercer = 50yr old, fat as fuck, washed up bum = Knocked Tim Sylvia out WHO Dana said was one of the best ever heavyweights until he left the UFC! Mirko Cro Cop originally came from a boxing background, did you know that? Junior Dos Santos, Level. = ex boxers! To say a boxer don't have a chance in MMA you'd have to be pretty fucking ignorant!
@jahdanza The majority won't, it's a whole new game, mma requires training such as boxing. James Toney had nearly a year of training, and made fun of Randy calling him "Princess". James Toney got what was coming to him.
I think now Randy should try boxing with James, since James had to deal with mma rules, ridiculous. I LOVE MMA, but this wasn't fair, James fought someone who's truly a legend at what he does, and with James having no real experience in the octagon, it doesn't really prove anything. I want to see Randy outbox James.
@Protagonist16 Toney wanted to fight an MMA guy under MMA rules because like he said they won't come to Boxing and fight him so he went to MMA and lost badly thats on him Randy never went to boxing and said that he wanted to fight a boxer under boxing rules.Toney was aware of the rules of combat in MMA but he came unprepared again it is all on Toney for taking that fight it must have not been that unfair if he agreed to it.
Had Toney thrown out the hot foot, the kick foot and slammed Randy in the head, it would have been over.
I'm looking over my dead dog Rover...
I'm looking over my four leaf clover...
Kick up the hot foot. Bitch kick the slap foot. Slap bitch the kick funk. Kick funk the slap bitch. Bitch slap the funk kick. Back slap the kick back. Back kick the slap funk. Funk slap the kick bitch. Bitch funk the kick slip. Slip funk the kick back. Back funk the bitch kick. Funk slip the back flip.
Plus the comparison of MMA ring and boxing ring don't compare. Boxing sucks cuz all you can do is box, they say they beat MMA, put them in the cage, they do their thing, MMA does their thing, boxing loses. Both get to do what their best at, were in comparison in a ring the MMA fighter can't do all he can, in a cage a boxer can do all he can. Catch my drift.
Randy was selected to fight James becuase the age gap isn't far. If he fought a younger guy he'd lost worse, had he fought the champ like he'd wanted he'd be in a body bag. Face it MMA is true fighting. Boxing is ..... Well umm..... Just boxing. Leg kick to yo face boxing!!!! PEW PEW PEW
@ooofemaleooo Tony wasn't limited in that fight. He had all his tools and smaller gloves on top of it. He's technique was boxing. Boxing vs MMA Besides as you know lot of people around the world run their mouths that his Toney's Boxing alone would be enough to win an MMA fight. Hmmm... sounds like boxing vs mma
stop talking shit abou mma fans and saying how toney was a bad person to use to represent boxing, the reason why it all started was because james toney thought he was mr.bad ass and could knock everyone out but got his ass handed to him.
@ooofemaleooo no in 93 it was revealed and toney made it ufc vs boxing by sayin boxers are better and will ko anyone in ufc and dana white said o yea well let me introduce you to mr randy the natural couture toney said ill stop a takedown with a uppercut randy said o yea and beat his face in randy said he didnt care about knocking him out he just wanted to beat his ass well not only was it a ass beating james lights out toney didnt land one punch randy showed him who the best fighter of all is
I would love to finally see a world class boxer learn UFC level take down defense. Chuck Lidel in his prime was essentially a high level amateur boxer with take down defense and the ability to scramble to his feet when taken down. And he knocked out people left and right. Just imagine if Chuck had Toney's boxing skills??? Well... hope someone someday comes along like that. Respect to Toney for giving MMA a try!!!!!

Anyone who believes a pure boxer can survive in the world of MMA just doesn't understand what is actually happening in the two sports.
I too give Toney big respect for putting his body where his mouth was. Big respect. I was not thrilled when the fans booed Toney both before and after the match.
It does prove clearly than even a world class boxer can not compete in MMA.
Let's face it, a boxer HANDS are the most dangerous in the world. Ju-jitsu is supreme on the ground and boxing is supreme standing...Hands only that is! I saw Couture's chin against Big Nog and I think Toney would have knocked him out cold. We all saw what Dana White said "I want randy to kill this guy" so Randy was taking the safe route. Also, I think Toney's cardio would have failed him anyways...You saw the difference between their bodies and Toney is no Roy Nelson, he was out of shape!

I think Randy went straight to the ground to avoid getting hit

@IronLegend76 Tim Sylvia is a idiot there is a reason he isn't in the ufc. Anyone who follows a game plan and isn't a one dimensional fighter will beat someone that steps into the ring with only boxing.

I'm sure Dana White's wallet appreciates all the gullibility of those who can't think for themselves (i.e. WorldTravelerMan) and mindlessly bought into their marketing campaign for that absolute farce on Saturday night.
Couture-Toney was irrelevant. As was Mercer-Sylvia.
@jagdjohn96 Didn't get I what I want? Who said I wanted anything?
The point I was making was that this fight was a farce from the get-go and the UFC was simply using the name James Toney built up 15-20 years ago for marketing purposes. Toney hasn't been a Ring Magazine top 10 ranked HW since Dec of 2006 and is not so now. In fact he isn't even ranked in the WBC's top 40 HWs, nor listed in any ratings put out by the IBF, WBA, and WBO. Oh, he is ranked by BoxRec.com at HW, though...52nd.
@jagdjohn96 A washed up, way overweight and clinically documented with brain damage version of James Toney has become irrelevant to boxing in recent years as he struggled mightily to even beat journeyman level HWs. He's also, because of his brain damage and steroids he has to take becasue of it, been refused a boxing license in some commissions like New Jersey. The 52nd ranked HW according to BoxRec. Also the 1093th ranked boxer P4P (same source). Yet a win over him is celebrated by MMA sheep?
hehe yeah, I agree that with a guy like couture, probably any "pure boxer" would not stand a chance.
Some people don't understand that this guys who fight MMA, spend their lives training takedowns, and ground game. It's not like someone who never fight in MMA can take a couple of lessons and come to the octagon and avoid takedowns and puting up a fight.
@jagdjohn96 Yet MMA fans who can't think for themselves buy into UFC's marketing like the sheep that they are. They even thought that this IBA brought that Toney held was some kind of indication that he's still a "champion" in boxing. The same IBA group that once proclaimed the joke that is Butterbean a SHW "champion". The same IBA that the true top HWs out there wouldn't use their belt to wipe their own asses.
Ok dipshits who think boxing requires more stamina. 12 3 minute rounds but only standup. MMA 5 5 minute rounds but with clinching, grappling, submitions, along with standup requires much more energy. I take wrestling and jiu jitsu along with Karate/Kickboxing. It's less energy to stand because ur not trying to keep sum1 off of u or keep urself on them. In kickboxing u can throw combos then relax.
this goes for U yea U the one talkin on the video cuz it looks like u dont know wat ur talkin about cuz toney is FAT like wow...look at this vid cuz they r two young professional figher and PLEASE make a video out of this..... Auggie Padeken vs jeremy williams... now those two r in great shape... like i say IT COULD GO EITHER WAY period but i love this one cuz it was a real fight....
@return2k2 MMA is not more dangerous than boxing, or football and the reasons are very simple: 1) MMA gloves are lighter and cause less damage, but the punches might cause more damage(less punches, longer careers). 2) No one has ever died in an mma fight (Not true of boxing) 3) No one has been seriously injured in mma (Paralyzed, etc.) 4) the controlled conditions and decreased variables make it safer than football, in all probability. Look into the history of the sport, debate isn't new.
The boxer i would have liked to have seen in mma is tyson, not todays tyson obviously but the tyson just before prison. If mma was big back then, with a few years of training tyson i think would be a potential champion. I dont think any pure boxer could hang with someone who can take them to the ground for obvious reasons, but the reverse will hold up that if you forced maia, jacare, roger gracie, matt hughes to take part in k1 or similar
MMA is obviously more dangerous than boxing, but we must realise that boxing in itself is a sport because boxers go for 12 rounds which requires a lot of stamina, and also, some boxers take blows to head for 12 rounds. A lot of these MMA guys can't even take a single punch. You really couldn't compare both sports and put them together but one thing I'll say is that for self defense, I'd go wih MMA because it's a more complete style of fighting. Rady clearly had an advantage over Toney.
@return2k2 I can't see how MMA is more dangerous, , in the long term boxing and football will damage it's Athletes much more That said after brutal loses in MMA like Keith Jardine or Chuck Liddell you have a glass jaw that completely cripples your ability to fight.
I doubt da MMA vs Boxing thing has been resolved. I mean boxer Richardo Mayorga was gonna get into it, but fuckin' Don King's greedy ass had 2 sue 'em over it. At least he put in da time an' effort 2 train 4 it.
@ooofemaleooo fully agree. MMA vs Boxing was just to sell the fight.
MMA is just HOT so everybody jumping in to claim ther money. The best MMA fighter wud get killed if he has to compete with a boxer with boxing rules. Dont get me wrong I am a MMA fan but A real MMA fan. I still believe that MMA is heavily dominated by boxing skills.
not in the ufc no but i think in a lower organization like wec maybe. first of all with out some mma no, flat out no, f that, there screwed... but if they at least can keep from fully being held down and GnP or subd then yes. so ill say pacman lol why not? if the lil fili beast has some wrestling i think he could compete. what weight class would he fight though? 125 or something? is that bantam weight in mma?
Any boxer is going to experience the exact same thing as James Toney did if they try and fight an mma fighter with a wrestling base. It doesn't matter if it's a boxer in his prime sporting a six pack and with one year nonstop takedown/grappling training. He is going to get taken down. You can't get your wrestling skill up to the level of a dude who has trained in it his whole life in just a couple of years. It takes alot of time and dedication.
But with that said, Toney deserves respect. Yeah he was in over his head but he didn't embarass himself at all. He got into the cage and gave it a go, what more can you ask? Did people really think he would be able to stop any takedown from Randy who took down decent wrestlers like Ortiz for example at will? Toney was a great boxer and had a fantastic carreer. Anyone trying to bash his boxing skills because he failed in a COMPLETELY different sport against a legend is an idiot.
@SxeScotty It's called promoting a fight and getting your name out there. I can't believe people don't understand this. Would the fight have gotten as much publicity otherwise?
Dont get fooled by boxing vs mma thing. Both sports have “RULES” and you fight according to the rules. UFC 118 was the show led by Tony with all his trash talks. Tony is an aging boxer, he just made his money, sale a big show (for Dana & UFC) and thats all. Imagine UFC 118 without Tony. I bet half of audience would not have bothered buying tickets. Dont forget this was not a sold out event. See MMA news and Dana interview about the sale of UFC 118 tickets.
nah a decent MMA fighter would beat a world class boxer most of the time..but there is always the chance the boxer gets a few big hits and its lights out obv
but u think about it..there are loads of boxers out there, surely some wrestled in highschool/college at quiet a high level? so even tho they havent used those skills in a long time..the basics are alreayd there..i wouldnt mind seeing that tbh
@WorldTravelerManIts funny, a awful out of shape boxer who cant get a televised boxing match wherever he tried co Headlines a UFC event against a HALL A FAMER kinda tells you which is bigger. Anybody that watched this complete joke and believes MMA dominates boxing cuz a MMA expert choked out a overweight fighter that cannot sell 10 tickets in his own sport is deluded. Why dont you ever see an MMA fighter going in the ring against a Hall a Fame boxer? We know cuz they cant do a take down
@dontizzle805 you would think since after Toney had the guts to go out of his own sport and fight in the UFC that Couture would show some respect and stand alittle with Toney, Just out of respect for his guts...Instead he just tackles him....What guts it took to do that....Very nice
Bad day for UFC......like the rampage vs evans fight.2 many take downs but MMa is a good sport theres room 4 every sport dana white stop tryna use boxing to boost up MMA its dumb comparing apples and oranges
There are a few boxers who made the transition successfully into MMA. Marcus Davis has been a reasonably successful MMA fighter, having been a professional boxer first. With only boxing skills, sure a boxer won't suCceed in MMA. But with boxing as a base and training in all the other facets of MMA, a high level boxer would make a fine mixed martial artist. Toney was overweight, what we call in the boxing trade "shot" and purely there for a paycheck.
I wish they let Toney fight a kickboxer/muai thai fighter as well. Cro Cop or Hardonk or Shogun. Because I'm sick of people saying after fight that Randy was scared to strike. Good Buffer impression man.
I think Ray Mercer knocking out former UFC champion Tim Sylvia in 9 seconds is just as significant and shows that such crossover fights can go either way!
ima put it this way, a boxer have a bigger change to win in mma than a mma have in boxing and this prove nothin for me cuz u guys talk about this fight like wow this guy [toney] looked like a hippopotamu why dontchu guys talk about ray mercer and tim silvia ? it was the same thin mma vs boxin and that fight lasted 12second, mercer by k.o and that fight didnt prove anthin either why cuz there is no such thin as mma vs boxing period.. i love MMA since i can remember and Boxing..
I believe the dispute is over and resolved. I was being arrogant and saying that Toney would kick Couture's ass... I was completely wrong. I will take this lesson to heart and try not to run my mouth anymore.
i come from a Boxing family , My father has golden gloves....i have been into MMA for 10 years now and it is Superior...i still love the science of boxing but MMA is in a whole other league on its own
If Couture could pull off a win against a top-tier heavyweight, like one of the Klitschkos, that would be significant. This win was not that big a deal. Toney is an obese middleweight, WAY past his prime. He never stood a chance. Put Couture in there with one of the Klitschkos.
if i had to pick any boxer with natural talent that with proper time and training it would be mayweather, although i think his ego would get to him in the fight
I love Couture and Toney, and I gotta give Toney his props for stepping in the octagon, where alot of boxers wouldn't wanna put their reputation on the line.
9 times out of 10, street fighters and boxers talk shit about martial arts. At that point, a street fighter or boxer must come into our house and fight under the rules you(as a street fighter or boxer) say is shit. Some people need some humility and mutual respect as fighters.

Also the 1093th ranked boxer P4P (same source). Yet a win over him is celebrated by MMA sheep?
Randineous 1 year ago
hehe yeah, I agree that with a guy like couture, probably any "pure boxer" would not stand a chance.
Some people don't understand that this guys who fight MMA, spend their lives training takedowns, and ground game. It's not like someone who never fight in MMA can take a couple of lessons and come to the octagon and avoid takedowns and puting up a fight.

Boxers can't even win against Muay Thai fighters. Muay Thai fighters always known to kick Boxer's ass.

@legendsaleem Muay Thai vs Boxing would be a good fight!
jagdjohn96 1 year ago
@jagdjohn96 Yet MMA fans who can't think for themselves buy into UFC's marketing like the sheep that they are. They even thought that this IBA brought that Toney held was some kind of indication that he's still a "champion" in boxing. The same IBA group that once proclaimed the joke that is Butterbean a SHW "champion". The same IBA that the true top HWs out there wouldn't use their belt to wipe their own asses.

I can't believe James didn't pull off a flying Gogoplata like I thought he would. There goes my house.

@jagdjohn96 I lost my car betting Toney would've finished with an Anthony Pettis style flying head kick.

@ooofemaleooo acually people likeanderson silva and vitor belfort have done pro boxing both unbeaten

SothisAmon 1 year ago
MMA is obviously more dangerous than boxing, but we must realise that boxing in itself is a sport because boxers go for 12 rounds which requires a lot of stamina, and also, some boxers take blows to head for 12 rounds. A lot of these MMA guys can't even take a single punch. You really couldn't compare both sports and put them together but one thing I'll say is that for self defense, I'd go wih MMA because it's a more complete style of fighting. Rady clearly had an advantage over Toney.
return2k2 1 year ago
@return2k2 I can't see how MMA is more dangerous, , in the long term boxing and football will damage it's Athletes much more That said after brutal loses in MMA like Keith Jardine or Chuck Liddell you have a glass jaw that completely cripples your ability to fight.
SxeScotty 1 year ago
@return2k2 ''boxers go for 12 rounds which requires a lot of stamina''
MMA: fighting 25min, 3min rest
Boxing: fighting 36min, 11min rest
boxers fight for 11min longer but they got almost 4 times more rest. you get the idea?

@asadweb UFC and Strikeforce has always been heavily dominated by wrestling skills...... Boxing skills are a distant second.

What I meant his age, boxing skills and to sale his boxing fights are dying..
hope you get it & mind ur language plz.

not in the ufc no but i think in a lower organization like wec maybe. first of all with out some mma no, flat out no, f that, there screwed... but if they at least can keep from fully being held down and GnP or subd then yes. so ill say pacman lol why not? if the lil fili beast has some wrestling i think he could compete. what weight class would he fight though? 125 or something? is that bantam weight in mma?

Any boxer is going to experience the exact same thing as James Toney did if they try and fight an mma fighter with a wrestling base. It doesn't matter if it's a boxer in his prime sporting a six pack and with one year nonstop takedown/grappling training. He is going to get taken down. You can't get your wrestling skill up to the level of a dude who has trained in it his whole life in just a couple of years. It takes alot of time and dedication.
papa1980 1 year ago
But with that said, Toney deserves respect. Yeah he was in over his head but he didn't embarass himself at all. He got into the cage and gave it a go, what more can you ask? Did people really think he would be able to stop any takedown from Randy who took down decent wrestlers like Ortiz for example at will? Toney was a great boxer and had a fantastic carreer. Anyone trying to bash his boxing skills because he failed in a COMPLETELY different sport against a legend is an idiot.
papa1980 1 year ago
@papa1980 Toney embarassed the shit out of himself by talking that much smack and then getting slapped around.
SxeScotty 1 year ago
@SxeScotty It's called promoting a fight and getting your name out there. I can't believe people don't understand this. Would the fight have gotten as much publicity otherwise?
papa1980 1 year ago
Dont get fooled by boxing vs mma thing. Both sports have “RULES” and you fight according to the rules. UFC 118 was the show led by Tony with all his trash talks. Tony is an aging boxer, he just made his money, sale a big show (for Dana & UFC) and thats all. Imagine UFC 118 without Tony. I bet half of audience would not have bothered buying tickets. Dont forget this was not a sold out event. See MMA news and Dana interview about the sale of UFC 118 tickets.
asadweb 1 year ago
nah a decent MMA fighter would beat a world class boxer most of the time..but there is always the chance the boxer gets a few big hits and its lights out obv
but u think about it..there are loads of boxers out there, surely some wrestled in highschool/college at quiet a high level? so even tho they havent used those skills in a long time..the basics are alreayd there..i wouldnt mind seeing that tbh

We know cuz they cant do a take down
dontizzle805 1 year ago
@dontizzle805 you would think since after Toney had the guts to go out of his own sport and fight in the UFC that Couture would show some respect and stand alittle with Toney, Just out of respect for his guts...Instead he just tackles him....What guts it took to do that....Very nice
Bad day for UFC......like the rampage vs evans fight.2 many take downs but MMa is a good sport theres room 4 every sport dana white stop tryna use boxing to boost up MMA its dumb comparing apples and oranges
dontizzle805 1 year ago
@dontizzle805
Bottom line Boxers need to stay in boxing. Mma needs to stay Mma. Listen to Couture's post fight comments.
Kliffdiver 1 year ago
There are a few boxers who made the transition successfully into MMA. Marcus Davis has been a reasonably successful MMA fighter, having been a professional boxer first. With only boxing skills, sure a boxer won't suCceed in MMA. But with boxing as a base and training in all the other facets of MMA, a high level boxer would make a fine mixed martial artist. Toney was overweight, what we call in the boxing trade "shot" and purely there for a paycheck.
jojojshmo 1 year ago
I wish they let Toney fight a kickboxer/muai thai fighter as well. Cro Cop or Hardonk or Shogun. Because I'm sick of people saying after fight that Randy was scared to strike. Good Buffer impression man.

randy vs toney..3.19 of the first round
tim vs ray mercer..12 second 1ST ROUND lol...i love it
their is no such thin as mma vs boxing...just love both sports and have respect for both of them...

I think Ray Mercer knocking out former UFC champion Tim Sylvia in 9 seconds is just as significant and shows that such crossover fights can go either way!

@ckym255 Brock Lesnar is the exact opposite thing from boxer though.... Lesnar stand up is so horrible, Randy just got caught with a lucky punch.

@fergusmc69 i know thatz wat im trying to say but people dont get it, is a FIGHT anythin could happen you n i know that, righ?
AmaziinqSheiZ 1 year ago
ima put it this way, a boxer have a bigger change to win in mma than a mma have in boxing and this prove nothin for me cuz u guys talk about this fight like wow this guy [toney] looked like a hippopotamu why dontchu guys talk about ray mercer and tim silvia ? it was the same thin mma vs boxin and that fight lasted 12second, mercer by k.o and that fight didnt prove anthin either why cuz there is no such thin as mma vs boxing period.. i love MMA since i can remember and Boxing..
AmaziinqSheiZ 1 year ago
I believe the dispute is over and resolved. I was being arrogant and saying that Toney would kick Couture's ass... I was completely wrong. I will take this lesson to heart and try not to run my mouth anymore.

If Couture could pull off a win against a top-tier heavyweight, like one of the Klitschkos, that would be significant. This win was not that big a deal. Toney is an obese middleweight, WAY past his prime. He never stood a chance. Put Couture in there with one of the Klitschkos.

either one of the Klitschko brothers would do better against Couture than Toney did, but would also lose by submission.
