If you wanna appreciate anything, do it, don't observe and watch. If you wanna feel the essence of being samoan and polynesian, don't observe, live and survive as a samoan to appreciate their differences. God made us all different for a reason. When you walk into a man's home, adjust yourself and not expect them to adjust to you.
it irritates me, as a non-white anthropologist how white/western anthropologists are so weak...i mean they can't handle heat and humidity and mosquitoes?? Oh my...aren't those just TERRIBLE conditions
@MsKatja86 Well, how can you cope with cold grey european weather?
Each anthropologist should be able to do as they please, study for curiosity and not for what is dictated on them. Or are "whites" of less value as study subjects?
I'm a Samoan who grew up and lived on the island for over 30yrs. Reading Margaret's book and what she did was good for anthropology but a great misunderstanding and misrepresentation of our culture. What Dr. Faanaafi Le Tagaloa said was soo true. Margaret brought her ideas and believes from America and used Samoa as a frame for her theory. All based on a lie from a few teenage girls. Thanks to Dr Freeman! You got to live, speak and be part of a culture in order to find the truth.
you people need to get a life whaever the result of her research was great for that time most of her subjects she interviewed were a bunch of moepis anyway so what f..k did you all expect
she was a white person even she got the idea to evaluate samoan nature, she didn't stay in samoa more one year compare to Freeman,Freeman was really perfect understanding about samoan culture ,he was stay in samoa long time, that why Robert Louis Stevenson the most famous writer called ,Samoa was a Treasure Island and Paradise, she was in science field, her mind was full of romantic ideas and also she 23 years old,
In this case about Mead theory,I didn't say something bias because I really understand my Samoan biological environment and nature. Mead couldn't stay and arise in Samoa for two years or more over, just a field trip as visitors, she couldn't performing in daily way of life, only words and jokes of Samoan lady she recording but she didn't observing in actions.I perfectly understand the nature of Samoan lady in natural science and anthropological view,
!Whats a big problem made up story where this foreign anthropologists prepare for Samoan society, aha!I'm a pure Samoan blood decended from Polynesian geneology and my whole life arise in Samoa until now,I'm study in Gotland University in Europe in anthropology and archaeology perspectives,I proudly to show the world my Samoan Cultural Heritage,as known as "Treasure Island"by the famous well known Writers,"Robert Louis Stevenson" and "Paradise".
The Samoans of the of Manu'a group purposefully gave Margaret inaccurate information because their traditons are so sacred to them. They wouldn't give up thier oral traditions for a million dollars. Margaret went to the wrong group. That is what I like about Manu'a, thought many Tutuilans hate them for their arrogance.
Hundreds of (white, Western) male anthropologist painted indigenous peoples as inferior, savage and subhuman. Margaret Mead studied a few different cultures in order to draw conclusions about human nature - understanding somewhat before her time that there's only one human race - and she's the ignorant, naive, romantic one?
Why is it so hard to take women's intellectual and scientific contributions for what they are worth and appreciate what they did bring to the table, like we do with men's?
Margret Mead knew nothing about the Samoan people and culture except for what she wanted to conclude. The Samoan people fa`ase`e her She was lonely and experienced culture shock therefore knew not what to expect. Dumb Palagi!
herc2770 let me reverse that comment of yours because you have no clue what you're saying...the first white man that set foot in da south sea and get to know the people was John William a missionary from LMS in Great Britt and he was the kindest man the poly people ever met and he save so many life. that is why samoan and all poly loves the white man no matter what. read the book call John William The Ship Builder...its powerful...trust me
tutuila is samoan land aiight america, on paper it will be under america but in soul and mind it is samoan land and everyone knows that evem american samoans
This is a debate between White people-whether human nature is the product of "nature" or "nurture"
Mead, who started her fieldwork in the 20s', chose to go to Samoa in order to learn about another alternative possibility of human nature in a non-Western society.
Mead appreciated Samoan culture. In her "Coming of Age of Samoa", she describes that non-Western Samoan youths didn't need to suffer from adolescence and sexual oppression as the one in Euro-American cultures.
Though the case of Samoan culture, Mead concluded that humans can triumph cultural boundary, such as sexual inequality, pressure of adolescence, and racism through nurture.
Freeman was once the supporter of Mead until he revisited Mead's site. In the 60s', Freeman researched in Samoa, yet he discovered that Mead was wrong in many points: Samoans were sexually and religiously conservative, and their youths actually sustained as much inequality and pressure as White adolescences
After he finished his fieldwork for many years, Freeman published his work against Mead 's fieldwork. Furthermore, he changed his ideology from nurture to biological determinism (since he believes that human "nature" is universal). The supporters of Mead and Freeman continued for several decades.
Herc 2770. Here is the whole story. How do you think?
(By the way, i tried my best to describe this story as I could. Please correct me if there is anyone know Mead-Freeman controversy)
Trip out on the dialogue the songwriter gave the meauli guy in that early black & white film, ' the flame of seven skies, I'm gonna stake me out a claim in Paradise.' You ask me the flame of seven skies was the palagi stirring in a pot full of sexually transmitted diseases, on his way to infect the Polynesian race. And what's this shit about staking a claim in Paradise. How would they like it if we laid claims in their motherland. White people crazy 'den a muthafucka mayne.
