You take this in, and feel it seep into the soul like cigarette smoke. You hold your breath, and feel the flesh in your lungs burn away as tears stain blood in the eyes. Finding this feeling,...nostalgic, you take another puff and sing softly to yourself, "It's a motherfucker, being here without you. Talking to the walls, just me again." Rocking gently, you cradle the lullaby of your mother's last words.........
This is definitely my favorite version of the song. So beautiful. Just having the song stripped down to the piano, it gives it a gracefully haunting feeling. And that look at the end after he stops playing ... he was reaching deep for that performance.
I discovered this song several years ago when my dad died, as I was looking for sad songs to wallow in. This one is by far the most poignant. Every time I hear it, it makes my eyes well up thinking about how I miss my old man.
This is the song in my head after I got done thinking about Natalya when I was in Afghanistan. But when I got home it was all good again. Life was right again.
Mark, you are one of the most genuine, soulful and beautiful musicians of our time. I understand your past, and it amazing how much you have power and strength you have to accomplished what you have, whilst dealing with an unfair amount of pain. We do Love to you, and hope you keep doing what you are made for. this.
I saw Eels in concert, superb!. Sometimes it is a mother fucker getting through a Sunday, when my partner left me I just bottled up my emotions and got angry with everyone and everything, this song helped me to cry and feel a bit better. Thanks Mark for an excellent song.
Never thought the words Mother Fucker would be in such a beautiful song....Really really really never thought the words Mother Fucker would be in the title of such a beautiful song...
I looked at the title of the song and thought to myself, what kind of song is this gonna be? I honestly thought it was going to be sht. But I listened to it, and couldn't stop listening for 2 weeks straight. Mark Oliver Everett never ceases to amaze me. This song is so true and genuine it can't help but bring joy to my heart.
One of his best. And that's really saying something. Never ceases to amaze me how effortlessly it seems; I mean - he's using t-w-o chords for the majority of the song. It "should" sound old/worn but oh no. He makes it work. He makes it sing. I'm so envious I... might combust :D
its one in the morning and I have been watching videos of E for 4 hours

No. He said in his 'Meet the EELS' compilation that it wasn't about someone who died. It is an excellent song.
