I cant seem to get the smoke to stay within the domain, it always just goes wherever and never stays inside the domain like its suppose to, am i doing something wrong?

When I did this test, rendering (and even frame buffers) weren't integrated into the 2.5 build yet.

If you mean smoke generator then yes. But, it already has particle generation.
So is it possible to create pretty realistic explosions with the current volumetrics setup?

Well, they're working on some more detailed fire tools, so the future for explosions looks bright. :)
But, this isn't volumetric. It's particle based. The sim physics branch which has volumetrics hasn't been merged with the 2.5 svn yet.
