  • This was very interesting. I love how she showed pride in what and who she is but didn't act like there was no struggle to go with it . Very good speaker

  • Very affirming and positive; and instead of a dry lecternly academic style she's having fun. I like her a lot.

  • I can't click the "Like" button enough times.

  • Not only that, but if she was a strong willed person she would not have let the world indirectly convince her into cutting her penis off in the first place! And if she was also proud of her past life and decision, she would not have mentioned the fact that she got cheated on for lesbians! All she did was prove to the ex gfs that she was a bitch to them and really did take their advice to stooping down to their level in life. This bitch is trying to redeem her dignity for fucking up her body!

  • @subliminalhyminal She hasn't fucked up her body, at all. You're blind if you don't realize that the shame is part of the word piece. Seeing her talk at other conventions, I know she is very proud of who she is, in how she carries herself and the messages she shares. Not everyone fits into neat little boxes.

  • @subliminalhyminal hmm she's written a couple books, continued her career as a biologist, and is also a musician.. And chosen not to have surgery but live her life as the proud trans woman she is.

  • @jessicabake2 so tell me... is she happy? or does she just have empty self given pride without feeling completely accomplished?

  • @subliminalhyminal I can't speak for her. For myself I can say I was miserable and didn't feel like I was really living until I transitioned.

  • @dem0nthesis you so don't understand why she said that.

  • @teneovestriexsisto All you people want is more more more more more! Leave her alone! You're lucky she even performed for you bastards!

  • this is such a great poem (and I'm crushing on her)

  • "Some women have a penis, some men don't" If people could understand that they would have no problems with trannies. Sad world.

  • julia serano is my hero!

  • This? This is AMAZING.

  • This was too cool! I can't wait to watch some more!

  • @teneovestriexsisto As for choosing a side. Who are you to decide that for anyone? It's up to how a person feels inside. While I may have decided to get SRS, others don't. And MANY others can't afford it. I fully believe we all have the right to decide for ourselves. What works for me probably won't work for somebody else, but that's THEIR choice not yours or anyone elses.

  • @teneovestriexsisto Actually... STUDY biology before you shoot your mouth off about it... There are MANY different hormones. "Estrogen" isn't even a hormone but a class of hormones while testosterone is just one of the class of hormones known as androgens...

There are hormones that control growth and MANY other functions within your body. Everyone has both oestrogens and androgens within their body in varying ratios.

  • Oh my god, back off on the caffeine!!!

  • "Some women have a penis. Some men don't. And the rest of the world is just going to have to get the fuck over it. And if I'm destined to be the loose thread that unravels the gender of everyone around me then I'm going to pull and pull and pull and pull until everyone is exposed, until they all finally see that all along, they were merely wearing the emperor's new clothes." THIS. awesome.

  • or maybe they just don't WANT to get bottom surgery, jeese get outta the binary, open yr mind

  • ok....this is what is commonly known as "speaking tongue in cheek" It's supposed to be funny, in other words. If I can't afford bottom surgery, or am not healthy enough, that changes who i am??? If you're confused, that's you. glad I could clear things up for ya.

  • Who's confusing people?

  • I think you meant 'ma'am'.

  • AMAZING! i love seeing you confidence and showing your internal experience! you go girl!

  • And HOW HAPPY am I that My comment comes after the great Kate Bornstein. Very happy indeed.

    Abby.

  • I have just three letters for you. W.O.W.

    : )

    Abby

  • Bless your frakking heart, girl. I so wanna siddown over coffee with you. Please get in touch if you're coming to NYC. love & respect, K

  • Amen! And amen that you have the freedom to make your voice heard! That society has found the moment - of freedom - to take that lost thread and decidedly grow from it. When Julia uses the metaphor of the animal backed into a corner, it reminds me of all the images I've seen of animals being trapped by farmers in stalls. At some point you're so trapped you can't even turn around, all you can do is fight. There are those who haven't even a chance of winning, but even so, they - we - fight.

  • Anyway, this is exactly why different movements should unite. TheVeganIdeal[dot]org is a vegan blog authored by a transgendered person.

  • You're wonderful Julia... I wish you were the woman who held me and tole me that you could see the woman in my eyes, because I wouldn't feel so mixed up anymore.

  • Which is to say you're a goddamn awesome girl. You were always a woman, and anybody who fails to recognize Julia is... well... fucked.

  • "...I dont think she is unravelling anything, simply reacting to a world that has treated her so unkindly! ".

She is unravelling, taking preconceptions to task and saying things aren't what they may seem. Any of us who are living our true lives are contributing to this deconstruction of what society wants to conform to.

  • Society moves constantly, sometimes for the better but more often than not by the helms of monitarians.

  • Love it! Thanks

  • My previous comment was a response to Teneo the "transgenderist". For some reason it did not get posted under their comment.

  • mtfradgal, I did reply to your comment but exceeded the 500 character limit and emailed you instead

    P.s.

a CD or Crossdresser changes clothes,

a Transvestite gets excited about that,

a Transgenderist changes gender most revert, and a Transsexual changes sex to match the body and mind. :)

  • Brilliant and hilarious. I love Julia's transgressive and provocative truisms. She is a genius!

  • I think you must be sarcastically agreeing with someone else since I didn't say anything even remotely resembling that.

  • Your right you did not, I was refering to "the mixed messages" but while your on the subject I dont think she is unravelling anything, simply reacting to a world that has treated her so unkindly!

  • Still not sure I follow but okay. Unraveling is her word not mine and it was her use of it I was questioning, specifically in the context of the "just get over it" sentiment she expresses in the same piece. I'm not even sure that she means them to be seen as compatible but it comes off that way in the performance.

  • A Transsexual Actually! Hermaphrodites is an obsolete word and most individuals with the observable condition like to be regarded as Intersexed.

    Hugs!

  • You obviously don't have a clue about what a transsexual person is. She was BORN female in the place that matters the most... the brain. Her activism, including her books, are to help educate the public as to the true nature of transsexualism. To help overcome the negative stereotypes that have been many still believe. You also believe SRS is a must, well it is for many and it was for me, but that is not always the case. And transition takes time, she may be post-op now. Transgenderist=CD.

  • Transsexualism was changed in 1994 to G.I.D. to separate people with from those that want!

  • Awesome speech! Gave me goose bumps.

  • Absolutely awesome.

  • Wow. *clapclap*

  • I'm getting some mixed messages here. You can ask people to "get the fuck over it" or you can embrace the idea that you're unraveling traditional gender norms but I'm not sure the two are compatible, at least not in the same breath. I'm very much aware of the issues that trans people face and of the need for the rest of society to advance gender discourse, I'm just not sure this piece deals with that in an intelligent or effective way.

  • I'm a BADASS too!

  • Anyone at all, who has been touched in anyway by gender variance, or better yet, everyone period, should pay attention to Julia. She makes me laugh, cry, and know with no uncertainty that I'm stronger than anything that can ever happen to me. reading her book was watching every thought I've ever had articulated beautifully and shouted back to me. I used to be pretty sure I could do this. Now I know I'm a BADASS!!! thank you so much, sister.

  • electric performance, and full of wonderful, terrible truth.

  • Amazing.

  • Loved, loved, loved it. :)

She's coming to our campus tomorrow to talk about Whipping Girl. I'm really excited.

  • Some women have a penis, and some men don't. And the world is just going to have to get the fuck over it. LOVE that line!

  • I've watched this video about 25 times over the last year and it never gets old. It's powerful because every freakin' word and emotion is TRUE. And "Whipping Girl" is a modern classic in gender studies. Thank you Julia!

  • this is completely fucking amazing. i love her so much. whipping girl is one of the best things i've ever read.

  • I think what makes 'Whipping Girl' so good is the research. I agree it is an incredible book.

  • @jessicabake2 It's more than the research. It's also one of my favorite books ever.

  • Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

  • So very, very strong

  • Great video very well made and very well put Kiss Kiss.

  • Wow, this was capitvating to watch!

  • She's amazing. Amazing. Amazing.

(Read Whipping Girl if you haven't)

  • Creature? Interesting that you have to dehumanize her, that's what Hitler did to the Jews. She happens to be a writer, musician and spoken word artist and activist. Oh and birth certificates are amended. Benine is spelled benign and means "having a kindly disposition; gracious" I find ignorance sad. Not talent, intelligence and courage.

  • I don't know if she knows how beautiful she is or what a good job she's doing, but I hope she does

  • Brilliant in both content and delivery.

  • RIGHT ON, JULIA!!!

  • Takes more balls to remove it than keep it. Don't you love irony?

  • shes a genius

  • eek, its in the post, exciting

  • Having read Whipping Girl, all I can say to this is Julia, YOU FUCKING RULE!!!

  • Julia Serano is so awesome; love it!

  • Im loving this

  • ohhh this is really awesome...i got goosebumps

  • Amen Sister....

  • APPLAUSE! EXCELLENT PIECE!

  • I am reading her book "Whipping Girl" right now, very amazing read. Gets me ranting and raving just before bed every night. GOOD JOB JULIA!

  • I am left moist-eyed and shaking my head in near disbelief at how good this is. I am in the middle of her book Whipping Girl right now and love it, too.

  • lOVE THE PIECE ITS BRILLEANT

  • it's hard to make a drama of your own drama. She did it brilliantly

  • this piece is soo good it gives me chills

  • Julia ROCKS HARD!!! I absolutely love this piece; I would love to see some of her other spoken word too. It would also be awesome if her band, Bitesize had some of their songs up or some concert footage. She is a killa on tha mic !

  • soo good.
