I have a male betta named Keida, and he isnt very smart, mostly shy. i tried teaching him that same trick, but it didn't work. anyway, hes not a big eater. :D
I have a female betta in a 5g tank and I can't be sure but I think she knows her name. It's hard to tell because she gets excited whenever she sees me lol. I always clap my hands before I feed my angelfish and mollies, and they wag their entire bodies in excitement like little puppies. This is an amazing trick you taught your betta, but I'm afraid if I taught mine she would jump out. Amazing, though.
I have a little small yellow scoop i use to drop the fish food into the water and my fish loves food (its a fatty) and whenever i hold the yellow scoop up to the glass it follows it. so use something like that to train it to follow your scoop
i just got a blue boy and girl they are so awesome and they haven't been fighting so far (btw i didn't intentionally put the boy with her he was sold to me as a female because he's a plakat just another reason you shouldn't trust petstores with show stock but i love them =D) and i'm getting my pocket money tomorrow or sometime this week sooo i'm going to get maybe two more girls =D and this ADORABLE little chubby barb i saw in the pet shop AWWW ^.^
I have taught my betta to do tricks too. I put my fingers on the surface of the water and he follows it to the location of the food and eats it. He eats a lot but I make sure his size doesn't increase. Sometimes he jumps at my fingers and he's a very cute blue fish. :D
Hi angelus2402004. I agree the waterflow is a bit strong. I agree that the water flow is a bit strong. We were in the process of doing a water change when we did this. The water level is a bit low - making the flow loud and a little strong. Once the water change was done - it's where it needs to be. Thanks for point that out because you're correct to notice it.
Well i trained mine that when when i knocked on the tank i was going to feed her, so u only have to knock and then wait a few seconds and then feed the fish. U repeat that like for 1 week, doing the same everytime, and then he or she will go....
How did you first train your fish to do that? I just recently bought an oranda fish, however, my fish sinks to the bottom when I open the tank lid to give him some food and he just wait there until he sees his food sinking down. lol.
how can i teach my betta to feed itself??im going on a long trip and by the time i come back i dont want him to died,,,oh and also how can i teach him to change its own water and everything you know so it wont get dirty..please respond asap..thanks
To answer the second question - if I were to put my hand in the water (which I have during tank maintenance.) She would swim around my hand. At first, she would touch mouth to my finger. Then she'd start rubbing the side of her body against my hand. I don't want to portray that as affection. Think she was just looking for the food she had learned came from my hand. We did something similar with a Pleco. We taught him to come out from under his rock. That way we could catch issues early.
I started dropping food only when she was within 5 cm of my fingers - making sure to keep my fingers close to the surface of the water. Continued doing this until she demonstrated conditioning of "finger = food is available." Then I started waiting until she came closer, eventually taking the food from my fingers. Then I started raising my fingers over time until she had to start jumping. At the end, started adding a cue very gently tapping the glass to ensure the sound was positive.
Harlequin Rasbosa (Not sure if I'm spelling that right) Also some tetras. The Beta is a female. So might be a couple other females in the tank too. But the tank has a lot of hiding spots for them to co-exist peacefully.
Oh - I wouldn't say that I'm a fish expert. But our tank does really well and many of the fish have lived for years. The Harlequins have been with a male and did well. They seem to like to school and they're fast. They're about the size of a large tetra. My understanding is 1 inch of fish per gallon as a rule of thumb. I have found that some of the Bettas are more aggressive than others. We have a really good private fish store nearby. The staff are fabulous in helping my son choose.
i had my female beta in with a bunch of other fish. she buffed up from swimming in the current and made friends with my huge 9-year-old angle fish! he usually won't let ANYONE go near the feeding area (he never leaves it) but he let HER go there! rasboras are great. Golden barbs are really sweet little fish, too. tetras are are fish that don't get into fights, for most species. but some fish are pretty mean, so watch out for that.
fish learn to associate very well but i would advise using a different method to get their attention. the tapping on the glass is very stressful on them. it sends shockwaves through the water that are detected by their lateral lines. would be like yelling in someones ear through a megaphone.
i have a male beta in my office at work.and everybody thinks i'm crazy but... he knows my voice.when i talk to him close up on the tank he stays in one spot "looking" at me puffing out his fins!! i have 2 rescued bulldogs and never thought i could "love" a fish but i really do.
PINKEE38 i think your betta really hates u no love,if hes puffing out his fins mean that he is angry not ready to kiss u.by the way im happy that u love and keep betta .i love them too.
LOL!! somebody told me that once before!! i still find his tenacity very endearing.could he be seeing his reflection? wishful thinking.lol!! thanks for the reply!! i still love him!!
@PINKEE38 I felt the same way! I stood over my Beta's tank (his name is Muffin) and he swam to the surface and poked his little head out. I just bought him yesterday, but I adore him :)
I think that beta fish love music and getting attention! I used to play my guitar for mine..and sing..and they would stay really close to the sides of the glass bowl and just "hang" with me! LOL! (and not, it isn't that they want you to feed them all of the time..they are truly smart!!)
whenever i come home from school my male beta swims around its tank a couple times rlly fast its so cute ^^

To tell if a betta is male or female look at the tails. If they are large they r a male but if they have small fins they r a female

u should use a more silent filter...that huge filter that makes a lot of noise makes the bettas more ill-prone
