That is a pro-mod bike, it does not use NITRO. It uses pump gas and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and that was probably just a nitrous burp, happens all the time. It looked painful though! When NITROMETHANE goes bang it is a lot more serious, that is why we wear ballistic vests to stop the exploding cylinders from smashing our hearts from our rib cage. All good clean fun!!!

Intake backfire is more likely, some nitro systems will go lean just off the button. Especially the NOS kits.

A piston going up would have to go through 4" of cylinder head, cams, valves etc.

I'd like to hear from the dude in question about what the damage was.
