I really need help.I like shooting but I cross-dominant-I use left hand for writing and right hand for almost everything else. When I shoot with a gun one-handed I can use either hand but I am right eyed.I can't close my right eye and look just with my left eye. When I hold a gun with my both hands I am lefthanded but right eyed.I can hold a rifle with both left and right hand but again I'm right eyed I have a lot of problems with aiming. I'm nearsighted too.Does anyone have a recommendation 4me?
Stumbled upon this video and applied these techniques at the range. It not only improved my accuracy, but also helped to alleviate muscle fatigue. Thank you for this great tutorial.
I can't look down my iron sights without at least tilting my head and slightly bending my neck down. Otherwise my buttstock won't be seated in the pocket between my shoulder and my chest. Might you help me, please?
Nice video. I watched this one and Part 1, and it's very helpful stuff. I was doing that thing where you look down the sights and then try to raise the rifle, AND I had my neck all bent up. Also, never knew about why they used to shoot standing sideways.
Damn lol. Looking back at one of my first days with my first ever firearm, I guess I was doing almost everything wrong. Think I'm much better now though luckily!
@akerone89 - Hey thanks for posting that! I think that shows a lot about the transition from a pure sporting to tactical position and how some things change but much remains the same. In the description they call this "sporting rifle" which I think is part of why some don't get what I am saying. To me that video is not "sporting" it is quite tactical. ARs, shooting & moving, multiple shots per station. This is shooting based on the engagement of human targets not squirrels, rabbits, etc.
@akerone89 - Yes and I really hate it when I see guys doing that with their wives and girlfriends. Everyone thinks it is funny to watch some little gal get the snot knocked out of her by a shotgun or what have you. Reality is with some proper form most of them can probably shoot better than their men.
Women should physically shoot better than men, their pelvis is better shaped for shooting. Especially in potions like the prone and seated supported.
i dont mean to criticize too heavily or be too specific but you are using a improper stance for accurate offhand shooting the stance you are showing is how many people learn how to shoot at first, however a stance where the arms are drawn closer to the body is better for proper, accurate shooting. On another note when you have to move your head down to achieve a proper cheek weld you should shift the butt of the weapon higher on the shoulder to prevent the need to drop the head to achieve this
@matc83 - I actually mentioned what you are talking about in Part 1, there is a place for exactly what you are talking about. The form I describe here is a "classic form", many people now advocate what you are saying and it comes from the tactical world. I find it is limited in effectiveness specifically at longer ranges on smaller targets on uneven and unstable terrain. I am not saying you are wrong, we just come from two different schools of thought.
I am new to shooting and was able to learn a lot from your video. Thanks!
One question: I was trying the form bringing the rifle up to the line of sight. I have regular iron sights and found that the rifle butt goes above my shoulder. Is the form different if you do not have a scope?
@sentryrook - That is a function of the rise of the stock itself. You may have to bring your head down a bit to compensate. You absolutely do need the stock in the shoulder pocket, but make sure your shoulder is coming up as well, get that arm 90 degress off the body and most of that will happen for itself. This is exactly why the method mentioned by matc83 has limits in the sporting world. Remember I am not teaching close quarters combat here but how to feed yourself with a rifle.
I'm slightly near sighted in my right eye, but of course Im right handed, so Ive got that case of opposite dominant eye/hand. It doesn't seem bad enough to really effect my normal shooting though, even if I switch hands. At least, not for rabbits and squirrels. 500 yard shots might be different lol. Thanks for the great video!

@survivalpodcasting Totally agree.
Also, I'd like to point something out: look at all those videos on which the shooter gets hit by the gun's recoil. They're all leaning back!

Thanks for the Video and podcast. Why did you not demonstrate the use of the sling for proper shooting technique?
ltlewis15 1 year ago
@ltlewis15 - Form first sling second. I will do it at some point and it is heavily featured in the book I am working on.

so how should you hold the rifle if you are right hand dominant and left eye dominant?
osbornj82 1 year ago
@osbornj82 - You learn to shoot left handed. It is much easier to train a weak side hand then a weak sided eye ;>)

This series definitely helped me out. I am fairly sure I am guilty of bringing the head down. That's probably why I miss squirrels so much...
Time to practice more the right way.

Awesome series. I assume the same is true for shotguns? Or are there any other tactics for those?
