Yes animals are cool. Training them to make a propaganda film to sell evolution is sad however. God created man to have dominion over the animals of the earth. As you can see the the animals are attentive to this.
They are morally and emotionally superior to us. We began dimming those traits as we became more intelligent, which made us fearful of imaginary dangers and other competitive humans. But have no question, we evolved from a species very similar to Bonobo. Our ancestors were leaner however, and were also aquatic which makes sense of how we look today, mostly hairless, some people in isolated places of the world have webbed feet.

As an environmentalist, I have trouble imagining where such a place is.

We don't have the luxury of being purists anymore, and this type of primate research is positive for promoting species protection. A more accurate term might be "worshipful"; they identify with her to the point that its hard to say if proximity to humans is anthropomorphizing the bonobos, or the other way around. I'm not sure I agree with putting any kind of chimp in a human environment. I think we should only observe their behavious in the wild. Okay, let them come up to humans, but don't tell them what to do. Just let them learn. Let them explore. Yes take musical instruments and let them watch and copy if they want. They aren't selectively breeding for intelligence, no. Kanzi isn't more intelligent inherently than other bonobos, he has just had much more education and enculturation. They are creating a sort of pan-homo society at Yerkes, though, with the more educated bonobos and humans living together.

You see, there aren't even 'levels' of conscoiusness, but rather 'styles'. Different life froms have different styles dependent on many factors - such as there individual species biology. We need to be able to rethink consciousness and finally see it as either what defines life, or as a bi-product of life. No other definition is adequate. Where you find life you find a style of consciousness - even in plants, moulds, etc - that's what enables it to react to stimuli for one thing.
I also went to the Natural history museum in London 2 years ago. They had an expo on consciousness that stated pretty much that only humans were conscious and all other life forms exhibited the illusion of consciousness. This underpins the flawed thinking in biological sciences at the moment, which needs redressing.

As someone who has worked with people with moderate to severe mental disabilities I can say that these apes are more capable and intelligent than even some people, just because you have never met a mentally disabled human does not mean all of us are smarter than many animals.

Bonobo's and other great apes were used in vivisection until the longitudinal experiment with washoe the chimp. We realised they have theory of mind,and therefore can recognise emotion and have there own emotions just like us but a bonobo is the only ape that can use facial expressions. There are new regulations for great apes; such as not allowed to be experimented on, they are a protected species and it is all thanks to people like susan savage-rumbaugh.

@pammyoneto I guess that was a bit of an exaggeration, technically. In common usage, the term "natural habitat" refers to the notion that there is still some distinction between natural and artificial space, like there's still virgin wilderness insulated from the effects of human activity. From that perspective, keeping animals in their "natural" habitat, means keeping them somewhere relatively purified of human interaction. As an environmentalist, I have trouble imagining where such a place is.

@pammyoneto Sure, but if things get to a point where we have a choice between extinction and captivity primate research, like the kind depicted in this video, I would rather see the latter. We don't have the luxury of being purists anymore, and this type of primate research is positive for promoting species protection. A more accurate term might be "worshipful"; they identify with her to the point that its hard to say if proximity to humans is anthropomorphizing the bonobos, or the other way around. That sounds extremely unfair to these researchers, who seem to obviously love the apes they work with.

this is amazing, I never underestimate animals, And i think its kind of ignorant to consider ourselves as the most intelligent species, cos there may be a bird that looks at us and thinks we're stupid cos we haven't learnt how to fly or w/e. I'm not sure I agree with putting any kind of chimp in a human environment. I think we should only observe their behavious in the wild. Okay, let them come up to humans, but don't tell them what to do. Just let them learn. Let them explore. Yes take musical instruments and let them watch and copy if they want. But early when she had a lead on the bonobo, I don't think that's right. To me they are human.

This video is amazing but I really wonder what the researchers' end goals are. if it is simply better understanding of ourselves and nature then great, more power to them . but they seem to be borderline going too far, like they are intervening too much - which could have unintended consequences. I hope the Bonobos natural environment is not being disturbed.

They aren't selectively breeding for intelligence, no. Kanzi isn't more intelligent inherently than other bonobos, he has just had much more education and enculturation. They are creating a sort of pan-homo society at Yerkes, though, with the more educated bonobos and humans living together.

It's not about watching, it's about exchanging and interacting. Of course Kanzi and Panbanisha are rather "humanized", but we are "humanized", too! Fallacious. Humans did not descend from anything called an ape, and apes did not descend from anything called a human. We both descended from a common ancestor.
However, to be precise about it, humans are biologically apes, along with bonobos, gibbons, gorillas, orangutans, and chimpanzees. We all descended from a common ancestor. Nobody "turned into" anything.

What amazes me most is not the video, but the responses it evokes on the observers. What do you think we're doing when we talk about "knowledge", "consciousness" and (that's the funniest of all) "scientific community"? You see, there aren't even 'levels' of conscoiusness, but rather 'styles'. Different life froms have different styles dependent on many factors - such as there individual species biology. We need to be able to rethink consciousness and finally see it as either what defines life, or as a bi-product of life. No other definition is adequate. Where you find life you find a style of consciousness - even in plants, moulds, etc - that's what enables it to react to stimuli for one thing.

They had an expo on consciousness that stated pretty much that only humans were conscious and all other life forms exhibited the illusion of consciousness. This underpins the flawed thinking in biological sciences at the moment, which needs redressing.

Well, Joshuaborn, I kind of agree with you. However, all pets - like all people we interact with - are subject to our culture as we are theirs. The annoying thing here is watching someone 'humanise an animal', and even have them on a rope. Surely you could enjoy the same experience without an actual physical restraint - after all, the arguement runs that these creatures have cultural restraint equal to, and compatible with, our own? Plus the best pet owners EXCHANGE culture with their pets.

Where I'm trying to go with this, is that you shouldn't make it sound like humans as a whole don't have any sympathy or care for animals. But it is human nature to regard the life of a human as more important than that of an animal. That will never change. Don't group everyone together, just because YOU think that humans don't treat animals properly(because if you want to not be hypocritical, you should find the survival of all species important; not just "smart ones").

Magnificent creatures! I hope we humans learn to respect their habitat and their right to be wild too. These wonderful creatures are not pets and should stay in the wild where they belong. I caution researchers not to glamorize these creatures for their cuteness, intelligence or human likeness because when we overdo it, these creatures suffer the consequences. They are captured and displayed in facilities not for altruistic purposes but for gain.

The humans who live there would need to be kept fed and housed to try and keep the peace.
I would think any setting that allows a population of bonobos to naturally reproduce is good.

For example, animal mothers protect their babies, animals mourn and get angry when they see someone dead of their kind.
And animals use facial expressions, just not usually humanlike, but I can say if my dogs are sad or happy by just looking at their face, and if they see I am sad they come to me.

SAPIENCE = the logical part of mind, most animals use only simple logic and emotion/instinct, emotion is instinctual, instict does not mean preprogrammed like a computer, instict are this that you do without thinking about it, for example the fear reaction is instinctual, compassion is instinctual.
There is no excuse to hurt ANY harmless animals except for food because the fact that they CAN SUFFER IS IMPORTANT, not if they can make up some worthless philosophy laden with superiority complex.

As someone who has worked with people with moderate to severe mental disabilities I can say that these apes are more capable and intelligent than even some people, just because you have never met a mentally disabled human does not mean all of us are smarter than many animals.
And all animals have emotions and conceptual states, even if these are simple in say insects who flee from danger, or complex like in monkeys, every animals is SENTIENT this is different from SAPIENCE.

Bonobo's and other great apes were used in vivisection until the longitudinal experiment with washoe the chimp. We realised they have theory of mind,and therefore can recognise emotion and have there own emotions just like us but a bonobo is the only ape that can use facial expressions. There are new regulations for great apes; such as not allowed to be experimented on, they are a protected species and it is all thanks to people like susan savage-rumbaugh.
