  • Good, I like that you share this video indeed. A 100-car freight train can move about as much freight as one hundred tractor-trailers and semis through more remote parts of the country, AND on less fuel, too. As for passenger trains, anyone who has ever undergone the stomach-turning, I wish success always

  • Is this from Encarta 98 or something?

  • I noticed that during the years of the Civil War there was more track in th North and barly ANY track in the south!! :0

  • @BTCRAIL101FILMS that is why the B&O Railroad was a prime target during the civil war. it connected the south with the north. i know u are going to say something about the PRR. but the PRR was built around 40yrs after the BO constructed thier line towards harpers ferry.

  • Railroads are vital to the United States. Trucking and airline companies are unable to move mass commerce across the country. This country will soon wake up and see that it cannot survive without them.

  • @historyboy08, indeed. A 100-car freight train can move about as much freight as one hundred tractor-trailers and semis through more remote parts of the country, AND on less fuel, too. As for passenger trains, anyone who has ever undergone the stomach-turning, knuckle-whitening ordeal that is a major traffic jam will appreciate the services rendered by commuter, light-rail, and regional lines.

  • we need to go back to this type of transportation

  • this is cool

  • The govenment spent 38 years, 38 years trying to shut Amtrak down. Congress for years just gave them enought money to get by. With sold out trains. And poor service, hot train, cold train,no train, the public still wanted improvements. But transportation policy today is controlled by highway and airline lobbyist. And it shows. We'll have to see if this changes. Ridership is breaking records even with a recession on Long distance routes.

  • @intercityrailpal Amtrak will never been completely independant i think. even if they sell out every single train for month they will still incur more than 100 million in losses.

  • Track miles went down because of unlimited investment in roads and airports in the trillions of dollars. While taxing the private railroads and the passenger tickets! This money was used to build more roads and airports. Private railroads not only couldn't keep up, but they went bankrupt. Train stations were replaced by gas stations lots of them. But something went wrong. Now, Cheap oil which a drive and fly society depends on it GONE!
