i lived through this pain! i was never notified i was getting this on. head pounded so much everynight from tightening, hands shook so much right after it was put on. it was the most horrible 10 months of my life. you eventually get used to it after a month or 2 but was totally worth it!

The first 2 weeks will suck and you won't be able to chew right and it will be funky to eat. But some Advil and some time you will get used to it. Food will get stuck up there occasionally and if you eat noodles, they like to thread themselves through it. It's that THAT bad.

um i just got an expander, but im 24 yrs old, so my bone has already fused, so they had to anchor in 4 screws to the top of my mouth, setting them in the bone, and now when i turn the key to my expander, the bone is literally being slowly split apart. the doctor said if i start getting black eyes and pain on the bridge of my nose, i should stop b/c that means my skull is LITERALLY splitting apart!!

@SapphireHeart100 I have one currently, you get one if you have a narrow mouth or lots of crowding. It expands your mouth. The key is put in a hole and cranked which make the little bars extend, forcing your mouth to become larger. It does NOT hurt. Its just hard to addapt to :)

@alwaysbaileyz Your not going to pronounce words right for a while ,and its going to be hard to swallow when you first get it, about two weeks of having it you should be use to talking and swallowing .you might get a gap! I had it for like a couple of months,now i dont ! (btw i'm 13) Oh and you might get a line in your tongue that may hurt ,because you might be use to puting your tongue up ^!

@Cabage4ever It might cause some irritation on the sides of your mouth. Its also hard to eat or swallow anything, or talk. Ive had mine a while, and ive already adapted. Youll be fine, its all in the process of getting a good smile! :D

i got this thing yesterday. THIS IS THE WORST SUFFERING EVER. It completely prevents your tongue from touching the roof of your mouth, which makes it hard to talk (pronouncing certain letters), swallow (if you noticed, when you swallow, your tongue goes up against the roof of your mouth to push food down the throat), half the food that goes into your mouth gets stuck up there, and you have to have it on for 6-9 months!!!! It's very uncomfortable because takes up a lot of space in your mouth.

@ShadowiGeneral I have to wear mine for 3 months, and i got them on nov. 10th. I had a chorus concert... an HONOR'S chorus concert. :l. I didnt even get a key. wtff. And I got top& bottom at the same time... Its an obnoxious bar, that dosent hug your gums just sticks there, holding your tounge up :(

@ShadowiGeneral it really does getting some getting used too. When I had an expander, I started carrying toothpicks around with me when I went out to eat. So if some food got stuck in it, I'd go to the bathroom and try and get it out, then swish some water around in my mouth. It'll get most of the junk out from underneath it until you can get to a toothbrush if you don't have one with you.

@OpTicNiko aww do I feel bad for you. I got mine on January 22 2011 and just got them off Aug 25 2011. 9 months of hell. 1st 2 months I couldn't eat. Literally I'd eat nothing causing me to lose 15lbs. It often poked holes and stuff in my cheeks. The food got stuck up there so often. But as you go on you will totally get used to it. Eating talking will b easy. You'll even see less food getting caught on top. Now tht I got them off 2 days ago I still eat like I got them on. Lol

I accidentally swallowed one of the brace things that went around my molars when i got my mold taken for it, and i had to turn mine 2 times twice a day for 2 weeks :/

and it didn't really hurt to bad, it just really hurt when i got it taken out, it felt like my teeth were coming with it.

hi, i have a question... my dentist said i must extract 4 teeth in order to get braces to straighten my teeth because my jaw is too small .... i know there are many different device out there to "expand" jaw -- such as what u are wearing... is extracting teeth to make room or no extracting just wearing jaw expander the same result???

@onemin1986 I had 8 teeth removed (including my wisdom teeth) and I'm wearing a expander right now. I think it's the same result. If your jaw is too small then you need the extraction and the expander. All depends on your case.
