  • Another fine example of Ricky Rudds driving .

  • I'd heard the dudes head exploded he never felt a thing. He was decapitated by the fender well and his body was said to be nearly cut in half by the force of being slammed by both fender wells. Then runover.

  • @popsbuilt i thought he died later at atlanta medical center.

  • how could nascar could've benn banned from tv? we still watch races today..

  • I was watching that day. I remember the commentators trying to cover it up, that the guy was going to be okay. There was no way he'd be okay. It was very sad and disturbing.

  • @clayton97958 dude he died stfu

  • fuckin brutal the guy didnt stand a chance

  • 0:16 did that guy changing the back right tire die?

  • @FlexaySexay yes he did.

  • @FlexaySexay Yup. He was crushed between the two cars and then was ran over.

  • Ricky Rudd was driving the car that killed him. This is the incident that caused them to have pit road speed limits.

  • isn't that just the pits when that happens.

  • @Rollingrock991 aahhahhhahahah no

  • @Rollingrock991 not funny. that guy died.

  • @gordo39432 aint that the pits

  • Who drove the car that crashed into the guy and killed him

  • @sneezabonk Ricky Rudd

  • holy shit, thumbs up for the jackman for not dying

  • @nstig8 um, he didn't but the rear tire changer did

  • 0:19 you see a splatter sad

  • @88888888888anonymous ther was no splatter

  • 0:19 you see a splatter

  • so if it was banned from tv then why is it on tv?

  • Ah, yes, the bad old days when there were no pit lane speed limits and no helmets on the crews. I remember CART drivers entering the pits at 200mph and slamming on the brakes to enter their pit boxes. Why was this ever considered acceptable?

    .

  • @zxcv1234vcxz No one thought something like this would happen

  • Did they not have pit lane speed limits back then?

  • @TheHoodedCreature no, they didn't. this incident caused them to have a pit road speed limit on every track

  • WELL IT WAS NICE OF SOMEONE TO PUT IT ON THE NET FOR THE WORLD TO SEE.......GREAT FOR HIS FAMILY IM SURE

  • Who's the fuckin scumbag that rammed into Elliot's car??

  • @TittyTittyBangBangXX you seem to imply he did it on purpose

  • @Sherpaful He should really learn how to drive before trying to compete in Nascar

  • this is what brought NASCAR to pit road speed right?

  • @LostHighwayFilms I believe so. I think it was implemented the next season. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

  • @LadyLeaMarie You are correct. Pit speed was introduced the next year if not sooner. It needed to be for sure. Sadly in most professional sports something like this has to happen, or someone has to give their life for chang to take place. :-(

  • @LostHighwayFilms I Believe So

  • what was his actual cause of death

  • @phxracing42 Rich sadly died of cardiac arrest in an Atlanta hospital.

  • @phxracing42 Getting hit by a fucking car.

  • FREE ps3s on my vidoes

  • it was banned from tv cause the rear tire changer died.

  • that poor tire changer never even saw him coming

  • Nice attempt to save,Rudd. (sarcasm)

  • wow jackman got straight whiplash too

    rip mike rich

  • i was there, sitting right in the stands in front of the pit.

all i saw was rudd spin, ddnt see the guy under the car

  • Have you seen tom pryce's crash? thats even worse

  • That was brutal. Those also were the days they didn't have pit road speed limit. I supose that probly changed after this horrible event.

  • @rjl1184 it was because of this accident that nascar implemented the speed limits on pit road

  • At first I was like, well thats not bad, whats the big dea.....ohhhh shit

  • Racing is not for girlymen or whiners. I've pitted cars on short tracks before and even in those without scheduled pit stops it was hairy at times. Racing will never be totally safe for the competititors in the cars or in the pits, or for that matter the spectators in the stands. Anyone that knows anything about racing knows this. You sign a release to enter the pits stating you are aware of dangers. The danger is part of the excitement. I love it and if I could, would still do it today

  • @natureboy99 altlanta aint a short track

  • @natureboy99 Stop whining, you big girl's blouse.

  • @ Everyone I love Nascar Racing Some of the things I have said may seem to lean otherwise but that never meant I don't like it. . Unfortunately unpredictable things along with quite predictable things happen . I just hope that someone will respond to the predictable things BEFORE they happen . That is all. It took the death of Dale SR for Nascar to implement a safer barrier and the Hans device , then later, the C.O.T . It's a shame they were not implemented before hand , Is it not ?

  • if u look at 0:19, u would see that rear tire changer get hit in the back and his helmet falls down. RIP.

  • @kbdevo1962 and then they made pit road speeds and restrictor plates.

  • @MrSterling314 Since I am Mainly into Mopars don't talk about restrictor plates . If you remember the Daytonas and Superbirds And the 426 Hemi cars all ran with them near the end of Chrysler's involvement with Nascar As a matter of fact the winged cars were restricted to 305 cubes by 1971 . And from what I have heard from a lot of the drivers is that they do NOT like them . This is one of the Resistance to change I am talking about . The field needs to spread out to help prevent the big one .

  • @kbdevo1962 i'm sorry but there has been alot of changes. I mean seriously do you even watch NASCAR. It's all about safty features. And as for the safer barrier it's on the turns because that's where cars go head on into the wall. On the straights you'll lose momentom and scrape it something. So don't sit there and say BS that isn't true.

  • @MrSterling314 Yes true But The way I see it is that they could have implemented a safer Barrier A long time ago . Also That barrier should be everywhere not just in some places . As you should know , Freak accidents happen all the time . Many drivers have ran into the inside wall head on . It's just a matter of time . I'll go on to say that they should implement a chicane to the entranceway to Pit roads .

  • @kbdevo1962 Jeff Gordon did at Texas, hit the inside backstretch wall head on, said he felt his organs actually move during the impact.

  • @MrSterling314 Try telling that to Jeff Gordon when he hit the inside wall at Texas head on.

  • @MrSterling314 I would also like to add that They could have implemented something like a Hans device , A long time ago . But the drivers were not comfortable so they did nothing . MAYBE ( There is no way of knowing this for sure ) If Nascar had mandated them D . E . would still be racing. ( It seems that most of those safety features require a fatal or serious crash to get implemented .) Besides they have been scraping the walls at Darlington since it was first made .

  • Nascar seems so steeped in nostalgia ,and are so resistant to change . How many more people will die due to that kind of thinking ? I still don't see the safer barriers in some spots of the tracks . Just because an accident will most likely not happen there doesn't mean no chance . I feel sorry for the driver that breaks those odds . The only thing they seem to change is spoiler angles etc .

  • @kbdevo1962 it's been ten years. look at what's on the inside of the COT

  • @kbdevo1962 you do realize me or you have a better statistical chance of dying on the ride to work tomorrow than people racing in nascar races

or our doctor killing us accidentally,,,, 8,000 people a year

in fact doctors accidentally kill more people per year than accidental gun shots

but we all like to hype stuff and fear stuff without putting it in perspective

  • @kbdevo1962 Also More times than I can count I have seen Drivers use Pit Road as an escape to avoid a crash . Thgey should run a road on the outside of the wall to help with that . Instead Someone could be easily killed working on a car in pit road because, while they may have a speed limit to pit road , that don't stop cars from going through at well over 100 MPH and most likely ALMOST in control . A chicane with a barrier would do a LOT to help protect the pit crews .

  • @kbdevo1962 Actually, they are still required to slow if they use pit road to avoid a wreck. Otherwise they'll get a penalty.

  • @TyVBuccaneer True but many will take the penalty as opposed to crashing . ( I would ! ) What I am talking about is something that would mandate a different mindset when approaching a crash near pit road. Something that is Physical that would ensure someone doesn't get killed by a car trying to regain control on pit road . A penalty means little or nothing , even to win a championship , if it means a life lost . At least from my perspective . Some people may not care . I do .

  • @kbdevo1962 There's only so much that someone going 150+ MPH can do in the split-second reaction time they have after the wreck starts, and no time to waver on a decision. Pick a direction and go. And the entrance to pit road is not always on the front stretch (take Bristol, or Martinsville for example. those pit roads actually start in Turn 3 and some pit roads have a wall at the edge of the lane.

  • @TyVBuccaneer True , My answer was more or less geared towards the intermediate tracks and superspeedways. Short tracks are a whole 'nother animal . Also a decision is made because of the knowledge of the track .And their surroundings And of course what the spotter tells them . If a Chicane was put in at Daytona's pit road entrance . I think that The drivers would still find a way to save their car. Going right next to pit road . And Pit crews may be safer.

  • @TyVBuccaneer Actually, they have to make an attempt at slowing down. They don't need to get down to pit road speed if they steer down there to avoid a crash.

  • @kbdevo1962 At this point, it is too dangerous for the pit crews and not enough for the drivers. They're driving more recklessly than ever!

  • yes this was the crash that led to NASCAR's eventual speed limit rule. The really sad part was that it took a pit road incident in 2001 (11 years later) at Homestead for NASCAR finally to demand pit crews to wear helmets.

  • Where the crap was he supposed to be going? A car sliding THAT FAST had to have run over oil or something...

  • @MrPingPongSr Back then there was no speed limit on pit road. This inicident lead to NASCAR mandating speed limits on pit road.

  • I think this is the crash that lead to the pit road speed limit

  • that crash had killed the right tire changer everyone else was enjured

  • Very sad moment in NASCAR.

No one thought much about the pit guys until this it seems. They were miracle workers by the clock - Yes but they are human beings who are in the most hazardous of professions.

  • It's ridiculous that it took that long for pit road speed limits to be put in.

  • I was at this race in Atlanta. It happened right in front of me. It was so horrifying !!! It's a shame it took something like this, to mandate pit road speeds, and crew members to wear helmets and fire suits !!!

  • Ow my god thats awfull. Riight rear tire changer had no idea it was coming and got slammed between the two cars WOW

  • that is surreal, rip,

he was flattened flatter than a pancake,,

    sorry fir the pun rip,,,,

  • This video does not look that bad has it been censored?

  • @SteveWard3928, the right rear tire changer, watch as the car slides in. He never even saw it coming.

  • he died

  • A similar incident happened in Atlanta in March 1979. A pit crew member went over the wall to wait on his car. It got sideways and hit him, killing him. They had it on ABC's Wide World of Sports (delayed one week). They froze the video at the moment of impact, though. I forgot who the driver was, though. If anyone remembers, please respond.

  • @mkl62 Was it Dave Watson?

  • @ShortTrackNews It was Mike Rich

  • @wildstargo9 I know the crew member was Mike Rich, that's not what I was replying to. Earlier someone asked about a similar accident and was asking who was driving the car.

  • BOOM!

  • Jesus, I would have hated to be one of the other pit members at that point. Being the first to see what was left of Mike Rich must have been a vomit inducing experience. . .

    RIP

  • i hope that driver had his brakes checked when he came in for that pit stop, because they were obviously not working properly.

  • @TheRanhughes ha they locked up they were working fine he just lost it

  • @TheRanhughes

You gotta remember, at this time there wasnt a speed limit on pit road, he was trying to get out first and lost control trying to get around a car.

  • @xXSCREEMOORDEATHXx Car #5 Ricky Rudd. As a result, pit procedures changed during the 1991 season. First, two pace cars would get in front of the field and only odd cars pitted first and even cars pitted afterwards, but could not change tires until they were back under green. Eventually, it would be eliminated and allowed service to be performed without odd or even cars pitting separately. Pit road speeds were checked by running cars through pit road via checking the tachometer.

  • o my fuck holy shit dude wtf

  • i hope no one died

  • @Stewart14rocks A tire changer was lost as a result of the accident and led to changes to pit road procedures from 1991-present.

  • Mike Rich was the tire changer that was killed. It was to be his last race as a tire changer.

  • back then they did not have speed limits on pit road but after this they did

  • how does this even happen i thort they had speed limits to prevent this sort of thing happening? ps new youtube sucks

  • This is before the pit road speed limit was implemented. This is the accident that brought about the rule.

  • They do, but sometimes these things happen. It could have been several things. He may have misjudged the wear and tear on his brakes trying to get into his stall. He could have been clipped coming out of his stall, or he may have been knocked off of the track and through pit lane which is rare but does happen. Also, many of these pit lanes are used as parts of a road course, and/or drag races when the oval isnt being used, this puts a lot of oil and other fluids down, making it very slippery.

  • @shakeyjake1990 gotten used to new youtube now :)

  • i wonder what the tire changer was thinking when that car came flying through

  • i wonder what was going through mind.....oh....that car

  • Ricky Rudd Flying Through the Pits like a Retard.. its a Shame Someone had to Lose Their Life kus of Someone Elses Lack of Judgment. :/

  • back then the speed limit rule didn't exist. It's a good thing they made that rule, but a little too late...

  • @MIBFreakPack I Know, I was Being a Smartelec kus My Fav Driver was Elliot..

  • this was the reason why...and rightfully so. I remember seeing this on TV when I was a kid.

  • Wow retard! really

  • The ironic thing about this was Ricky Rudd was the first driver to be penalized for speeding on pit road after the speed limit rule was put in place. Always thought Rudd was an idiot.

  • Bill Elliott (#9) took the pole and was dominating this race before the incident on pit road. The rear tire changer Mike Rich was killed...RIP.

  • @HossMark thus pit road speed limit. I remember that race, pretty sad.

  • i watched this race. it was being broadcast live,as it was the last race of the season, back in the days of the winston cup-the accident was seen from the camera positioned near the front of pit road-probably in the unocal ball tower-

many race fans saw it live, including probably many kids:during later news broadcasts,it did not show entire sequence, but it was not secret nascar footage-i'm sure they kept the footage to analize the accident, but it's no mystery. race fan since 1973!! peace world!

  • i was 7 years old when i seen this...still remember it and speak of it till this day.

  • Once again NASCAR showed how it is a lot like NASA: don't fix something till it kills someone. They needed pit road speed limits from day one, only got them after this.

  • Was watching live and I beleive bill was leading and was that Ricky Rudd in the 5 car? It was a sad day

  • guys would you stfu! stop bickering like freakin kids, I'm 11, and i don't comlain as much as you do, you people are the only ones who could ma a 25 second video turn out to ba a month and a half argue sage- wtf?

  • your right lol

  • lol these comments are even more entertaining than the video.

  • What if it was your father, son or brother that was killed in that crash?

Would anyone enjoy having people watch and be flippant about your tragedy?

I'm not for censorship of ideas. I am for limiting content out of respect for others. The airing of this footage would have only succeeded in feeding those who get off on tragedy. No place for that in sport.

  • I thought I saw blood at 0:21

  • where?

  • Man, what a way to die

  • thats sad i feel bad for those guy

  • i remember that race,,, that was in atlanta, it was the last pit stop of that race- year. pit road speed limit was started at daytona in 91

  • NASCAR experimented with alot of different rules after this. They tried pitting by track position with odd/even cars pitting seperate. (under cautions)

  • It is true that this was an unfortunate incident and a life was lost, and I don't see a reason to post this on You Tube. You Tube should not be linked with that sick ass Faces of Death episodes. I have no desire seeing anyone die. Come on people! It was bad enough seeing Dale Sr. perish. Some people need some serious therapy!

  • How about so it can be in the public domain and accessable for free to anyone that might need it for research/educational purposes?

I understand your emotional reactions, but censorship is NOT the answer. I suppose you would be in favor of burning books you feel are objectionable too, right?

  • What's educational about seeing footage of someone die? That tape should have gone no further than the NASCAR officials to help determine safer ways to access Pit Road.(i.e. speed limits in & out). Censorship?! Are you high? And, what the fuck does burning books have to do with NASCAR?

  • For one, this was the exact incident that set up the rules for a pit road speed limit. If someone ever wondered why such a rule exists, or questioned the need for a rule, look no further than this video.

And no I'm not high, I'm just sick of fuckers like yourself trying to rid the world of anything perceived as less than pleasant viewing. I suppose you are in favor of not letting the Zapruder Film be seen by the public too right? I mean that only shows an assassination of a president...

  • And secondly you obviously don't get the concept of censorship if you think what you're trying to promote isn't censorship.

I suppose you're one of those right-wing nutjobs/borderline fascist who tries to put their hypocritical version of morality into law and force others to act like them. Good thing YouTube has more sense than that.

Then again, if you don't get the book burning analogy, you're already a lost cause...

  • You're too smart for your own good, aren't you? You have absolutely no idea what the hell you are talking about? I love it when smart ass YouTube fucks, like yourself, who are probably sitting on your ass @ home accumalting all of these on-line degrees, courtesy of Mommy and Daddy War Bucks, posts comments and make asses of yourselves. Please don't bother responding, because myself and others do not want to hear your idiotic opinions! DURRRRRRRR

  • Nice red herring first of all. Way to completely ignore my points and start attacking me.

Actually I'm a teacher; they actually pay me to educate YOUR kids. However I am still young enough to unforunately give you the time of day to go on about shit you know nothing about. Besides, like anyone wants to hear YOUR opinions as much as they want to hear mine.

I suppose we shouldn't read about or teach the Holocaust anymore either...too much death...and what can you learn from death?

  • So how am I making an ass of myself? Is it because as an adult, I feel that I should be allowed to view content such as the above video without other adults trying to tell me what is morally correct? Please, do tell. Speaking of which, I just got home from work, but you messaged me at what...10 am? Why aren't you at work? You're claiming I live off my parents, but it is you, a 46 year old man, replying to me at 10 am on a NASCAR video. Hypocrisy much?

  • Just because you Home School your own kids, that doesn't make you a teacher! And FYI Amigo, I'm retired from the millitary and have my own business, thank you very much. Sorry to attack you, but I just couldn't resist! My point is, and please try to listen, is that kids do not need to see graphic shit on T.V., because it can warp their minds. Then, when people step off the edge of sanity and start killing sprees, it's the press that is to blame because it's their "right" to glorify these events

  • I'm 24. I don't have my own kids. I'm not going to stoop to your level and belittle your military career, since my father was on submarines during the cold war, but I do actually teach at a school, so don't belittle mine.

Secondly, if you're worried about kids seeing this, then do your job as a parent. I don't feel it's necessary to remove anything and everything that might "warp" a mind. Having curiousity and 'the desire to see and understand" is not the same as glorification.

  • 1,000 apologies. You are entitled to your opinions. Best of luck in your teaching career.

  • the 90's fucking ruled all of time.

  • This one, Bill obviously, NEVER got over and will Always be with him. God Bless.

  • Short time later pit road speed was implamented

  • shut up dickhead its says banned, if you got half a brain you would read that and realise why, CRASH BANNED FROM TV<<<

  • if children look at a video that mentions a crash that was banned from tv, then it's their own fault.

It's not like this video starts playing whenever they go to the main page or something... They have to click it to see it...

  • It's a good thing you are responsible enough to shield your own children from videos such as this by SUPERVISING them.

This is the reason why I never got to watch Married With Children. It was on the tube, but my parents made sure they knew what I was watching. The internet is no different. People like you make me sick. I'm going to shield my children from your post!

  • couldnt watch married with children......that is sad.

  • rip

  • The good thing is that major changes resulted of this incident, it's unfortunate that a loss of life has to take place for motorsport to realize these things.

  • I wonder what Bill Elliott or Ricky Rudd was thinking when that happened.

    R.I.P. Mike Rich

  • That is so sad to see :(

  • The man bending down to change the tire got squished when the car spun out. :(

  • Actually 2 guys died, both the jackman, and the rear tire changer, The Jackman brocke his spine and passed away of his injuries, 2 days later.

  • FOLLOW-UP...Mike Rich was the right rear tire changer, not the jackman. I didn't mention that earlier.

  • Yes this guy died...Like the earlier post said his name was Mike Rich....This is the first I have seen this since it happened....I WAS a jackman for a race team and this and other accidents was a major factor for my leaving.

  • omg

  • im guessing he broke his neck

  • Damm that would suck, did this guy die...

  • unfortunelty yes

  • r.i.p. mike rich

  • Ouch!

  • ahh what a douchbag for even watching

  • i remembee this. you never lose the know in your stomach when something like this happens. it never goes away.

  • This is the event that lead to pitroad speed limits.

  • It actually lead so a lower pit roads speed limit, the original speed limit, about 20 years ago was about 2 to 4 times what it is now.

  • Rest In Peace

  • Now thats interesting. The vid is about Bill Elliott losing a pit crew member (and Friend) in a pit road crash. However, there are people arguing over what comes from crude oil...

GTX260, C12, leaded fuel, unleaded fuel; they all come from crude oil. Plastic #2 and Vasoline Jelly comes from crude oil too.

To better justify the video we should be talking about how sad the man's death was, how cool Elliott is, or how we can prevent accidents like this in the future.

  • let's c, Jeff Gordon, Micheal Waltrip, Robby Gordon, and many other drivers, shit happens, RIP

  • damn that was nuts! pits stops should be in the olimpics

  • You idiots who think nascar wastes gas really are retarted... Nascar and all other forms of motorsports do not use gasoline, they use a fuel called blue fuel. It is not made from oil nor is it made from any other dire material so all of you people need to think before you speak.

  • GTX 260 is made from oil.
